Yeah, so am I. People can see my MacBook Pro now and know that I spent more for a better machine just by glancing at it, instead of having to come over and ask, "Is that a MacBook or a MacBook Pro?" I like my computer to be easily differentiated from a lesser machine.

Jesus get over yourself, what a load of bollocks.

The firewire removal being discussed is that of the MacBook line, not of the MBP (also note that the MBP loses its FW400 port compared to the current line).

BTW the MBP FW port could also be an FW1600 or FW3200

Taking FireWire off of the MacBooks would be one of the stupidest things I can imagine.

"Uh, no. You can't edit movies on this machine. If you want to hook up your $200 digital video camera, you'll need to upgrade to the MacBook Pro"

Then again, Apple doesn't have the best history of actually doing what customers want with the computers…

am i the only one on here that is very very sick of all these speculation threads? i mean, i know this is the "macrumors" site, but all these people with their theories drives me up the wall. how about this? we will all find out Tuesday.
i'm going to go throw up now. :p

Lifeinhd....

lifeinhd...what are you talkin about...people wont be able do differentiate between your notebook and a g4... oh no i didn't !!!!!!!

oh yes i did...

The only thing is, if you look at the trackpad slot for the Pro, it looks like there's some extra reinforcement.

Now look at the pictures showing insides of these cases.

Yes, this enforcement is in both. It's simply at the same distance from the front edge, so in MBP's it's under the touchpad, while in MB it's just below the keyboard.

It's probably too small for mini-dvi (current mini-dvi is 33% higher than USB port, and twice as high as a jack, while that one is barely as high as a usb port, unless the usb ports are freaky with some kind of huge padding it doesn't match), but a googling master uncovered documents talking of a mini-displayport created for apple by a chinese company, that might fit: displayport is compatible with dual-link dvi, so it would work out for the MBPs losing full-size DVI, and the suggested MCP7A platform has powerful enough integrated graphics abilities to handle it on the macbook (without the need for a discrete gpu).

Of course this is only speculation.

It's MCP79 series, MCP7A is for desktops :). There's also the possibility that there's an Ethernet/FW port - there's such a standard, IEEE 1394c-2006. And a theory that a covered hole in the left side of MBP casing is some kind of dock connector (iMac-like dock patent quoted many times). Apart from these, the above post pretty much sums up realistic speculation from this topic.

But anyone know how much the top notch model will cost? I doubt it would be $1500 (like the top model on sale now)

I think around 1300$
and if there is no more black version, there will be only two versions :
899 and 1099

and if Apple is generous :
799 and 999 for the top end
...
and for the pro :
1799 to 2299

and if Apple is generous
1599 to 1999

and for the air
1599

and if apple is generous :
1399

Those would be <<aggressive prices>> :D:D:D

Remember floppies anyone?

PS: Reminder: There's an incredibly ugly Ethernet versus FireWire poll going on. FireWire going strong there.

While I would like to have Firewire too (so I do sympathize with the Firewire supporters), I really don't see anything to discuss on this point. The port in the leaked photos is the shape of a Ethernet port, and the size of an Ethernet port, and as far as I can make out, it has the same logo beside it as the Ethernet port on my Powerbook has. Ever heard of the saying "if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck..." ?

The best we can hope for is that it is a dual use Ethernet + Firewire port. If :apple: was really dropping Ethernet and keeping Firewire, there is no way they would keep a Firewire port that looks just like an Ethernet port instead of keeping a regular Firewire port.

Have a look at the leaked MBA case and its trackpad:

And now the current one:

Glass trackpad on the MBAs anyone?

With regard to the question of FireWire, I'd like to remind everyone that, as rumor has it, Apple will introduce a 899$ notebook. Whether or not this thing is going to come aluminum-clad (which seems plausible, considering that they're striving to unify looks), Apple will want to make some cuts to reduce costs. There's no way around it. As far as I know, while USB is, FireWire isn't integrated into chipsets but needs a dedicated chip on the board - which not only but also increases complexity but also the potential for hardware failures (there are going to have to replace at least a few boards just for firewire failures).

On the other hand, there isn't that much of a rationale for keeping FireWire. FireWire is relatively unpopular with the broad masses, so it is a likely candidate to be dropped. Who does "inevitably" need the FireWire? Professional sound and video creatives can and should still buy a more expensive MacBook Pro. That's why it's called the pro. And almost no one uses FireWire for hard drives, with the exception of some Mac fans. That being said, I only see one good point for them to keep the FireWire in: Camcorders. And no, not some pro equipment (go, get an MBP!). Consumer camcorders, that is. Cause even plain old Joe Average will be disappointed if he cannot make his one work on his MacBook with iLife / iDVD on it.

Now, I don't know much about camcorders. However I know that the consumer variety does have USB ports, albeit somewhat less useful, if I am not mistaken. But the question is: Could the average consumer get by without FW for his cam? If the answer's yes, looking back at the pictures here I would find it quite likely that Apple would drop FireWire on the MacBook.

Could anyone with some knowledge of recent camcorders maybe shed some light on this?

Wow. Have you ever seen a woman naked in real life, without having to pay for it?

Yeah the MB looks to have ethernet but no firewire.
The MBP has ethernet and FW 800 (or 3200).

So both have ethernet. Neither seems to have FW 400, unless there are hidden connectors somewhere.

I'm still not sure if the magsafe fits in the small space clipped out of the MBP photo. Wonder where it is. On the back perhaps?

Look at the photo showing the inside of the MBP's case. Count the ports. Yes there it is! :)

I think you're assuming that people really give a crap. Let me guess; you have a Gucci laptop case, right?

Less and less

Either the firewire 800 or 400 port is missing, as well as the s-video port. Very disappointing. Black keys look ugly.

the new mb, mbp and mba will be:
1 plastic 13.3' MB(original MB case)
2 aluminum 13.3'MB
3 aluminum15.4'MB
4 aluminum17.1'MB
5 aluminum Macbook Air(C case changed)

That is not a good set of specs. The rumour said about 12 different SKU's, that's more like 15 different SKU's.

Here's what I think:

2 13.3" MB (starting at $799, although this COULD conceivably be 14.4" or so as well)
2 15.4" MB (starting at $899)
2 15.4" MBP (starting at $1099)
2 17.1" MBP (starting at $1299)
2 13.3" MBA (starting at $1599)
2 15.4" MBA (starting at $1799)

With the MBAs, a 128GB SSD BTO option drags the price up to $3100 or so, that would explain the $3100 high-end price tag. Most SSDs are expensive still.
