FireWire did (and does) things differently and better than other buses. Mini-DVI does nothing that DVI doesn't already do.

I could grit my teeth and accept it if Apple were trying to turn it into an actual standard, but insofar as I'm aware, they're not.

I'm pretty sure that new port isn't a new form of DVI but rather more of a display bus. Then whether it's HDMI, DVI, Displayport they can all work with adapter(s).

At least, that'd be the smart way to do it.

Update on the amazingly successfull Ethernet or FireWire poll:

After a 150 people participated (from 24 countries, wow) we have the following numbers:

Ethernet: 68 votes (45%)
FireWire: 82 votes (55%)

From this we can see:
A) Maybe there is a pro FireWire bias in the MacRumors forum.
B) If A is not true, then FireWire should not be killed off lightly, as apparently it is a popular feature. Camcorders, target disk mode and hard disk access in general have been discussed on this forum.
C) Ethernet is also important (someone suggested that it is not necessary anymore. The numbers say otherwise).
D) Apple should either have FireWire through the Ethernet-connector or had better leave both options in, as one thing is for sure: There will be an uproar of disgruntled users come this Tuesday.

The poll is still open, for anyone who wants to vote, you're more than welcome. I doubt that it will do much besides making the point more clear, but you never know who's watching...

DVI-I is (and so is DVI-A which I've never seen), but DVI-D isn't, even dual link as it's solely digital, you'd need a complete converter.

As far as I know, it has none of the above as it's completely digital. It is however compatible with HDMI and DVI-D.

So you're one of those fabled 1080p fans? I didn't think you guys really existed.

Short answer: no

Long answer: **** no, it's blasted stupid

whats wrong with 1080p its really gorgeous

but it should be obvious that...no these notebooks are keeping the same aspect ratio as the last gen...why are we even talking about it?

Not Mini-DVI?

Sorry if this comparison has already been posted - I can't get through all 34 pages before I have to get to bed.

Has anyone determined what type of video port is on the new MBP?
I thought it was Mini-DVI because of the shape, but it seems far too small as illustrated in this crude image:
MBPLate2008.jpg

The USB and minijack are pretty accurate despite the different angle, but the video-out port is much smaller than Mini-DVI and doesn't look like any other port I know (Micro-DVI, HDMI, Mini-HDMI, Display Port etc.)

Maybe I'm way off, and it is just Mini-DVI; if not, I hope whatever it is supports dual link.

The various "analysis" and measurements done in this thread agree with your conclusion (far too small to be mini-dvi, the one used on the current MBs anyway), it might be a mini-displayport as some other macrumor dweller uncovered references to such a port apparently commissioned by apple.

SO I can't buy the new Maccrook ? Instead I have to buy an old computer with a faulty video card for more money than the new computer, with better specs. All because Apple couldn't put 1 firewire port on their new Maccrook. They sell all this software ; Logic, Final Cut, etc that need firewire, yet they don't even support it themself ? Imovie is worthless now.

Now instead of for sure buying a Maccrook and probably being with Macs for a longtime, I'm at a crossroads. I was saving/holding out to buy a Mac laptop for a while and now I have to consider a PC no matter how bad Vista is. Apple used to market towards the creative artist and "act" like they cared about costumers. I wish they never released the Ipod-Iphone, personally. Now all they care about is raping people out of as much money as possible.

I'd think that more people use wi-fi and firewire than a hard line to their network, so those numbers make sense to me.

Heck, I'd rather have access to my FW BD-R than my gigabit port.

I didn't even think about that. Yow, they definitely better not kill it off now.

Sigh...

sadly...thats more of a fact...than pretty much everything on this thread...

Anyone else think the spy shots look like this nVidia press release photo?

nvidia_macbook.jpg

I think you are right. The upper and lower aluminum sheets do project a tiny bit beyond the actual edge. This is seen in the snaps but slightly exaggerated in the NVidia Ad. And yes it did look thinner to me (i was trying to compare the spaces around the ports with those on my MBP)

I don't think it'd be too farfetched to expect a minor speed bump for the MBA, it's been 9-10 months.

I assume. But whats the metal on the trackpad? Or is that photoshopped?

Or does it mean the mb/mbp has something the mba doesnt, trackpad-wise? or vice versa?

any chance it is a mini usb?

well well.....i guess with no usb on the right I must have the wire of the mouse all over....excellent!!!!

Ha ha, funny guy. Yeah, it might be not bad. I've got a MBP 17" and of course it's 16:10, which I think is great. Not sure if I would actually like 16:9 better. I've fiddled with the VAIO AW series (18.4 inch 1920x1080 screen, quite beautiful) and it wasn't so different from the 16:10. The footprint is a bit smaller and it allows for a wider machine (the AW series has a numerical keypad to fill the space). For those looking for a desktop replacement for media on the go, this aspect ratio might become the popular choice. You can do a lot with the extra width and reduced height, and you don't get the black bars with movies. Full screen real estate is used.

Remember just a few years ago when people lamented the demise of 4:3 screens in favor of 16:10? The purists were complaining about the loss of screen real estate for the same width screen. But who would go back to 4:3 now? Maybe the same will happen with 16:9, who knows.

I guess this trend could go on ad nauseam until we end up with like a 1651: 117 screen or something! But I think the optimal point will probably settle as 16:10 or 16:9. Both seem good to me.
