anyone else think the Alu surfaces are quite, uh.. glossy?

Also, whats with everyone's obsession with firewire? Are there lots of professional's equipment that runs on firewire? In the consumer market, most products are USB with firewire as an option of you pay a premium.
Please don't flame me, i'm just asking because I wanted to know why people are holding onto firewire as if their life depended on it.

it's because there's a protective film on the aluminum surface.

Sorry but this is complete bs. The macbook has plenty of power to run audio apps well. In fact most modern laptops have more than enough juice to run audio apps well but the biggest concern/potential bottleneck is the FireWire chipset implimentation. Traditionally, Apple has done this very well.... that's why I, as musician, WAS planning on getting a macbook. Now I'm not. Simple as that. The MacBook pro is WAY more computer than I need and a $1000 more expensive.... Paying a $1000 for a fw port is stupid. And what are most artists short on?... Wait for it..... Oh yeah, cash!

If you can't tell, this thread pretty much just ruined my day... :(

You are basing all this consternation on ... wait for it ... RAMPANT SPECULATION BASED ON RUMORS! Before you run out and purchase a PC you may want to wait for the event to see what apple actually releases.

We don't know if any of these "spy shots" are even real. While it is fun to speculate, don't let it ruin your day...

Fw800

Ok, I haven't browsed all 1000 comments, but a lot of people are freaking out about the lack of FW400 on the Macbook.

Look at the pictures again........

There is clearly a jack that is almost identical to FW800 next to the ethernet port. Notice the Magsafe cut out of the pic?

FW3200, FW1600, and FW800 all use the same jack, not to mention backward compatible cables for FW400. This makes perfect sense, and is a step forward for Apple.

I believe we could be seeing easily FW800 on the Macbooks and possibly FW1600 as well! :D

Hopefully tomorrow we´ll see shots of the bottom cover. I´m betting it will be wedge shaped, Air style. Not eating my thong or anything, just saying.

And what are these, DUDE!

The one on the right is the MacBook case. So that photo is irrelevant.
The one on the left is the MacBook Pro case with some tape?

Edit: Ok there are things happening on the inside of the MBP case in that area, but nothing to suggest that its a hole/port hole.

Not sure if it has been mentioned here yet, and not sure what doing so could mean, but I noticed so I thought I'd share.

Both current MacBooks and this leaked image (below) have 14 keys that run across the top of the keyboard: the ESC, F1-12 & Eject keys.
So what?
Well, the only thing I'm here to point out is that current MB hinges start between the F1/F2 & the F11/F12 keys. But on this leaked pic, they start one key wider: ESC/F1 & F12/Eject keys.
Also, looks like the Power button placement has been moved from just about the Eject key on current MBs to a bit closer the edge (again, as seen below).

That's all I got.
Gotta roll to the David Byrne, Brian Eno show. Yah!

MBP ports

Maybe this will be helpful. These are all photos of the MBP, not the MB.

There's an extra hole at the far right in the bottom photo. (I couldn't draw a yellow line to it.)

Whatever this thing is (not to be confused with the extra hole in the above photo), it's evident on both the inside and outside of the case, so it's not merely a sticker.

it's also argualbe that the macbook air wasnt intended for the typical consumers, i dont see apple dropping the macbook and making eryone get a air

they will not drop the mb i would never buy the air i need 2 usb and a built in super drive

because the cameras people already have are firewire and they dont want to by a cheaper usb model

Because I own 2 cameras, and 1 external hard drive all of which are firewire based and they work great.

People used to get hung up on the USB vs. Firewire debate, which is basically pretty lame, but if you remove a connector spec that is still in pretty wide usage, that is a big deal. You better be certain that the removal doesn't serve as a "differentiating factor" against you.

I'm old enough to remember when apple replaced the ADB connectors for USB. You'd of thought the world was ending for some people, but it was the right move, and it needed to happen sometime.

I'm not sure if there is a parallel between that and firewire or not (I would say not, at least not yet). I for one think firewire as a standard still has a lot of legs, and you won't see Apple abandon it anytime soon, certainly not on the pro hardware.

Which means that either the spy photos are wrong, which is a possibility, or that Apple is trying to differentiate consumer computers vs pro computers by supporting more connection types on their pro line. Especially now that the pro line and the consumer line are both rumored to be made from aluminum, they will need some "differentiating factors". The firewire ports could be one of those, but I myself think that would be a mistake on Apple's part. Differentiate with CPU/GPU, and ports like eSata, not ports like firewire.

I guess we'll all find out on Tuesday.

Indeed, not to mention that there is no point.
So funny when a rumour comes out, the comments/ideas people get go off at strange tangents and suddenly all things seem possible to some...

that was actually a patent filed by apple,

HA! lets hear your witty comeback to that, seeing as you seem to know steve jobs personally

the brick is not the way it is made the cases are injection molded just like the current plastic ones. i do think the brick is a add on with firewire. i believe apple created firewire so why get rid of it.

Die cast, actually... It appears to me, based on the photos, these computers should be very stiff torsionally. Solid as a...brick.

Hmm perhaps, but what's to say it's not just some sort of mount/clip/framework on the inside? Unless you can see a hole running through how do you know it's a hole?

And that still doesn't answer some questions:-

Why is the bit under the tape on the outside orange?
Why is the orange bit protruding?

unknown port

What if the port is just a place to slide in the remote? the hole could just be the eject button

If the one port with video icon is the video out, and most likely it will be, then probably those who mention that is going to be the place for a SIM card or any other type of cellular data connection port/dock/holder/whatever...GPS....may be you are right guys?

A random guess - A finger print scanner?

I always thought these were a bit naff. But who knows. Its the right position for it, convenient location for the users hand but out of the way so as not to detract from the visual appearance of the design.

On second thought it would be hard to scan with. Tricky to get the left thumb to and requires a hand-cross over move to get the right thumb to.

Ok - maybe a dumb idea.
