Anyone else think the spy shots look like this nVidia press release photo?

nvidia_macbook.jpg

nope the optical drive is in the wrong place

Nope, the OD is that black plastic area beside the kybrd.
There's a reason for that ridge, it wouldn't be there on only one side for kicks.

And it's buggin' me.

Some will be there that need to be protected from flex or something.....

But WHAT??????

Alas.... my time here is done till this afternoon. I have to go be all "Suzy Homemaker" like and bake some fresh bread and home educate my kids. Wonder if i can figure out how to make this "school"?? Logic class??

You mean life sucks 'cos the living buggers don't have a space bar?

It's a part when battery would be in a current MacBook, isn't it? Of course it might be completely different with a new case and everything, but if the battery stays in the same place, the ridge could be there to help keep in place some layer that would prevent the top case from overheating?

If we look at the leaked images from about a month ago showing an apple notebook case with a large area at the back missing for the battery and line this up with the screw holes near the front of the keyboard, they fit perfectly. Suggests that the battery will be at the back.

sorry if that has been already covered but i couldn't find it scanning through this huge thread.

with these picks and assuming the keyboard is like the MBA keyboard we should be able to calculate the exact dimensions of the MBP.

has the new MBP a smaller footprint than the current MBP?

Please can we have:

Apart from maybe 16:9 14"/16"/18" on the Pros I'm with you on the above.

Where is the third USB port on the MacBook I've been asking for... figures eh? Looks pretty much like all they did was under the hood stuff and convert the casing into metal (plus the LED screen replacing the current one).

Even if they sell that at 800$, most PC notebook if not all, at that price have 3 and sometimes 4 USB ports...

Better be dam good under the hood upgrades.

this is probably a retarded question... but if they get rid of firewire on the macbook, how would i use migration assistant? thats all i really care about when it comes to firewire...

Now it seems like a really easy call:

  • Consumer camcorders come with USB (at least modern ones).
  • Apple hasn't offered any FireWire peripheral for a while now, right?
  • USB2.0 is good enough for hard drives (yes, it's a bit slower. But not very much so. Many won't even notice)
  • USB2.0 is way cheaper than FireWire
  • Dropping FW on the MacBook saves costs
  • Only including it on the Pro-books makes for nice product differentiation
  • There's no evidence of FW ports on the photos of the smaller notebook in this thread

Next MacBook will came without FireWire.
I'd be willing to bet on this.

(OK, that was really my ultimate and final say on the topic)

Out of ~1400 posts, most of which are going round and round and round in infinite circles on exactly the same issue, this is the most sensible answer I've seen so far.

I feel for those who wanted a low-end Apple notebook with Firewire, I really do, but face up to it: it's VERY unlikely. Apple made a decision to move you up to the Pro range.

The only possibilities are:
* This idea of Firewire through the Ethernet port - but why go to all that trouble and R&D cost when there is space and it'd be cheaper, just to put a damn port there? So I find it unlikely.
* That it's an early prototype and they had a change of heart. IMO, very unlikely, it seems the sort of decision they make much earlier.
* They've moved the Firewire to the back on the MBs. Um.... why?
* That we're looking at the $800 "MacBook Lite" (or whatever), which has lots of things excluded, but the new version of the existing MacBook (at the price point of $1099 or thereabouts) will have it. Out of the choices, this seems the most likely, but even then - it's not like Apple to offer so many different options. 4 different types of notebook? Usually they're consolidating these days rather than differentiating further. Also, where are the pics of it (that said, where are the pics of the 17"...). Surely they'd use the same casing and just dummy-plug the Firewire port. But who knows.

Ultimate answer: Find out tomorrow :)

As for that taped-over port. It has a little round hole next to it right? My theory *is* the docking station. There would be something inside the docking station which would push into the hole and this would slide open the cover, revealing the docking port. There'd be some logistical reason not to just have the cover swing upwards letterbox-style - maybe they're afraid of people complaining that it gets scratched by the connector pushing it out of the way!

some say the world is about to end, i say, it's just about to begin.

apple: the first 25 years was only the beginning.

Fifth possibility: The presumed MacBook pics here aren't even legit to begin with. ;)

Very good point. They could sell an adapter, though, which would sure come at 19$ minimum and maybe make this whole thing slightly profitable - while at the same time slowly phasing out FW on the entry-level books. Plus, they'd get a sales figure grasp at how many users actually use their FW port anymore. I doubt it nonetheless. But it is a possibility.

I cannot really make myself believe that Apple would introduce a docking station. Rather see them taking the "wireless route". But the docking station seems the most "logical" explanation to me...

No. (But you can have a 3.5 inch one)
Yes.
Yes.
No.
Yes. (or 16 inch maybe)
Yes. (or 18 inch maybe)

But where's the MacBook Non-Pro 15 inch? ;)

so you can do it through wifi? but wouldnt that take forever?
Probably.
They also could do it through Ethernet (as I have said before, real-life speeds at FireWire levels have been reached over GB ethernet, AFAIK)
