Either way if hulu wanted to make an app or make their videos on the website playable on the iPhone or iPod Touch they could have done it from the beginning, for some reason they haven't, I don't really know why the new 3.0 software would change anything in their mind unless marketshare for the iPhone increased dramatically after the new iPhone was released.

Why cant it be FREE??

Why don't we wait until the Pre is actually released so we can see if the phone/OS matches all the hype. Hard to compare a virtual phone with a real phone. Remember the first iPhone? Looked great on paper and in ads, but, some of the features fell short in actual use. The Pre won't be Perfect.
The difference is that people have actually seen it used in real life, already. It was at CES '09. Unless you think it will somehow go backwards in terms of usability, I'd say the hype is justified.

Even though Apple is a newcomer to the mobile phone arena, they've hit it out of the park on their first try, despite the glitches. In fact, I'd go as far to say that if it weren't for the iPhone, there would be no Pre.
I would agree. The iPhone definitely jump started the industry. However, it'd be foolish to suggest it will always remain on top (like some on these forums).

Why only for the web? Funny how you don't complain about similar things that Apple does, but on the hardware level.

Ironic, imho.

Because on the web you only have that choice, its supposed to be as open as possible.

Hardware people can opt out of.

SMS/MMS are always included together.

I always thought so as well, but I discovered with Verizon when I cancelled all data access but just left TEXT messaging on my brothers phone - pic messages were not included and I was charged data rates for every MMS that he sent.

So underwhelming.

Apple are just "releasing" features that should have been there in the first place. They truly are the masters of hype.

Yep these features should have been there in the first place, but I'm very glad for iPhone users (I'm not one of them) that Apple is planning to implement them. However most people will still be buying the iPhone as a fashion statement rather than for features, since other manufacturers have a faster product cycle and therefore more up-to-date feature sets.

So... what about QuickTime then? That's a proprietary product that's used on the web. Why don't you have a problem with that then?

Well if the streaming API made creating such an app easy enough so that the opportunity cost is low enough to make a profit off of it...

Using nothing but Palm pre approved apps. Lets see how things play out once 3rd parties are actually developing and putting their apps on the thing. In other words REAL WORLD USEAGE, not just demo material.

I would guess Palm is feeling very un-confident right now. Considering that about 90% of the features they had over iPhone 2.0 just evaporated.

I do love Apple products, but step out of their limelight. Palm aren't feeling un-confident. It's Apple who are playing catch up, releasing "features" that every other manufacturer has already as standard on handsets much less capable than the iPhone. 90% of the features that they had over the iPhone, are all features that should have been there in the first place :p

It used to be other companies playing catch up to Apple, not the other way around. Apple lost their way on this one. Nothing revolutionary or new about this 'update'.

I don't want to get spoiled. Where can I see the video which will be posted online? Is it there already?

One thing I really hated about today's event was that Apple indicated that 98% of apps (of the 96% of the apps that were approved) were approved within SEVEN days. While that technically might be true for app approval itself, what they DIDN'T say it that it is currently taking 2-4 MONTHS for new developers to get the app store CONTRACT approved before the app can be posted on iTunes. So Apple's statement today was completely deceptive. As an example, the upcoming Live365 internet radio app was submitted on Jan 6, was approved on Jan 14, but they are STILL waiting for contract approval before the app appears in iTunes. And this is TYPICAL for new developer apps.

Other than that, this was a pretty good update, even though almost all of the additions were on Windows Mobile phones for years and years already. The four things I REALLY wanted - App organization / management, File management through iTunes, Video support (assuming hardware support) and Flash - were missing and thus probably a year+ away, so it was still somewhat disaapointing, although I'm used to being disappointed by these events and actually this was more than I expected.

However, the REAL thing I'm waiting for is at LEAST 32GB on the next gen physical iPhone. Give me THAT and I could care less about any of these features.

Tony

I wouldn't be surprised if this comes with the new hardware.

I don't think anyone should be holding their breath for additional functionality with a new iPhone.

Most of it were features that were long time coming and I'm not going to congratulate Apple for finally implementing them. What is with the outright lie that the 1st can't support MMS? I am hope that their non-answer to tethering is an issue of them not wanting carriers to charge extra for it. I'm also not surprised to see even more ways to charge us through iTunes. You can buy apps, subscriptions, and now even in-app pop-ups to buy rocket launchers!

I am disappointed to see there are no changes to the notification system; pop-ups are as obtrusive as ever and will only get worse with push. Still no place to store documents on the iPhone with a user accessible file system, so no iWork integration. No springboard update. No native way to sync third-party apps. No multitasking. Before you start spouting background/push, there is a big difference. Backgrounding is when apps run in the background, often without user knowledge, usually when the app is "closed" by the user but the app decides to keep running in the background just in case. I'm glad there will be no backgrounding, but that is different from being able to run multiple apps. Push doesn't absolutely nothing for internet radio, pedometers, streaming media, etc. Want to switch playlists while receiving turn by turn directions? Sorry. Send a text while using simplify media? Nope.

Overall, when my contract expires around October, there's probably only a 25% chance I'll be sticking with the iPhone.

Maybe because Hulu is in part an attempt to break the Apple ascendancy in media? Hulu was started when NBC removed themselves from the iTunes store in order to create an alternative to iTunes.

exactly my thoughts. I live in Toronto, and Rogers is 100% okay with tethering! I called them and checked numerous times! They are okay with it becuase they dont offer unlimited data (I have 6gb) which is plenty! as long as i dont go over it. Its wierd that they would say that carriers dont support it. I know people who have jailbroken and use tethering and Rogers is Okay with it. They better allow tethering apps in the app store come 3.0!

You have to read and/or watch the video.

Apple said they have built in the support for tethering into 3.0. Its up to the carriers now to decide how they want to offer it (free vs. pay).

AT&T will NOT offer it free. Since we have unlimited data, they WILL CHARGE for tethering in the US.

least someone agrees there shouldn't be a whole load of DLC apps... Devs may get greedy on that front, and DLC may become so common the appstore may get annoying, paying small installments for items that should already be there.

Payed for version updates i'll happily do, DLC i will, but not payedDLC.

I dont think this news is anything special, but it is good news nonetheless.

I still think the more exciting iphone news is yet to come. Reckon there will be some significant improvements in rumoured new iPhone this summer.

I get so tired of reading this unoriginal thought. It is also true that there are apps for the iPhone that no other phone has, and capabilities that are unique to the iPhone. And let's not even talk about user interface and ease of use.

I take it your phone can play peer to peer games?
Yours also has in game (and most likely to be implemented elsewhere) voice chats?
Your phone also has HUGE expanability through its connector to enable it for use with a (soon to be) massive amounts of never before thought of accessories?

Man your phone must be great!

My point is that this was deffinatly more than JUST catchup, theyve implemented many things i never could have even thought of on a phone.

At this point it doesn't have to be revolutionary. You can't create a revolution every year. For palm the Pre is supposed to be revolutionary but when its out in the real world for people to buy it's going to have to go up against iPhone 3.0 for peoples $$$ and today it just got a lot less compelling... especially if the Pre ends up costing a lot more.

And are you people really REALLY going to keep this 'should have been there in the fist place' **** up all day? REALLY? Christ, people bleat when the feature isn't there, then proceed to bitch when it is there...

I might pay the 10 bucks if spotlight works with music, its something I always wanted and it puzzles me that they havent implemented such a simple feature yet. Otherwise its a pretty boring update, Palm is probably feeling pretty confident right now.

I was really hoping that they would allow you to disable the "unlock" screen. That is just such a stupid and useless screen that makes using it really frustrating at times, the home button is PLENTY protection from accidents. Seriously, does Apple use their own products? How can anyone not hate that screen after 1 day? Maybe they will support it but it wasnt a feature worth mentioning...
Yeah Palm also better hope they find enough money to keep the company alive.

I don't understand what you're trying to say here, if hulu is trying to take power away from the iTunes store that's more of a reason for hulu to be playable on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

I dont think this news is anything special, but it is good news nonetheless. yes most other phones have all these features already, but I personally don't miss any of them anyway. Only really excited about copy n paste.
