So... what about QuickTime then? That's a proprietary product that's used on the web. Why don't you have a problem with that then?

w00master

The file formats the quicktime uses are not though. I don't think anyone cares about prop. players...just that the file formats be open. Realplayer can also play h.264.

Yep these features should have been there in the first place, but I'm very glad for iPhone users (I'm not one of them) that Apple is planning to implement them. However most people will still be buying the iPhone as a fashion statement rather than for features, since other manufacturers have a faster product cycle and therefore more up-to-date feature sets.

:rolleyes:

They are some nice improvements but I still won't buy an iphone again until the battery life issue is addressed. Hopefully the next version of the iphone will have a much better battery life, video recording and better camera.

<sigh>
s/copy\/paste/(flash|video recording|1\.0 MMS|general whining)/i;

c'mon people, really.... this is not a bad update at all.

QuickTime is a wrapper for codecs, such as h.264, sorenson, etc...

I don't deny this, but it's still proprietary.

Btw, Flash can also be a wrapper for H.264. So, imho this so-called flash is "proprietary" claim is a bunch of BS. ESPECIALLY when Apple does the EXACT SAME THING.

Uhm, or it may be, that the iPhone has the best UI by a mile, of any other phone on the market.

I have my gripes about the iPhone, but most are addressed by this OS update.

I tried to read it all, but maybe I missed it. Is there any change in the way apps are organized/sorted? I hate having so many pages and scanning through them to use that as my organization method. Folders to hold certain categories of Apps would be nice. Any changes in that?

Do any of the 100 API allow apps to share files with other apps? I've not heard anything on that, but it would give HUGE potential for 3rd party apps!

It's not the same thing. You can embed H.264 on a site and have your browser use any number of players to watch it. When it's embedded INSIDE a .swf file which is embedded on a site, you must use flash to watch it.

Hey guys, sorry but I am really looking for that quicktime movie which is posted every time after the event.

I don't want to get spoiled. Where can I see the video which will be posted online? Is it there already?

Indeed I do wish they would include this feature in the OS, then there would be one less reason to jailbreak.

Nope...

...and nope.

Apple had a lame event, but let's wait until WWDC before we make a judgement. This is an advance preview, so I have a feeling a lot more is coming. They're only showing what developers need to see... not everything that will come. This way competitors wont have all this extra time to copy. Be patient... if this is the final release, I will join people in their rage.
Updated GUI?
Mini-tablet support?
Multi-tasking?
Split-screen/windowed views?

Haha I think I'm too optimistic already.

Well it's taken Apple some 2 years since the original release to offer a full set of smartphone features.

However considering that they are new players in the mobile arena, and that they've redefined mobile interfaces and ease of programmability, amongst other things, that was to be expected. You simply cannot throw more programmers at a problem to get somewhere quicker, indeed if you do that you'll get there slower nice times out of ten.

The basic fact is that this will be out in June (most likely), the Palm Pre hasn't yet been released, Windows Mobile 6.5 is archaic and still not out. Symbian at least has an aggressive release schedule and proper backing, but Nokia had to drag in QT in order to create a usable programmable UI which will be available in the next release - again, not out yet.

And when it is out, the fact that it took 2 years to get there will be completely irrelevant. The only complaints will be about Flash support (increasingly irrelevant unless you like viewing ads with embedded video as loads of them appear to be right now) and background apps (which I think should be allowed during active phone use times, but the problem here is defining 'active'). Oh, and maybe video recording and voice dialling.

I think this is a major announcement today that shows that iPhone OS is turning adult later this year with revision 3. It's far sassier and modern than the geriatric pensioner of Windows Mobile ;)
