Video Recording

It seems to me that video might be part of the new hardware in June. By adding YouTube subscriptions and YouTube accounts to 3.0, I'll betting that video recording will be here in June.

So, just to clarify...

What's available today to developers is a beta of the SDK. There is not a beta of the SDK and a beta of 3.0 that they can put on their phone, correct?

If there is a beta they can put on the phone, I'm about to make me a developer...

Then go make yourself a developer because the SDK AND the 3.0 firmware are available today!!! (I think its $99 for the developer program)

iPhone Developer Program Members - Download Now
Enrolled iPhone Developer Program members can download the new iPhone SDK and iPhone OS 3.0 beta from the iPhone Dev Center now.

When it comes for the iPT ver.2, I'll purchase. It's worth $10.

Most likely the new hardware (hopefully coming in the summer) will have a nice expansion of capabilities. This phone will look like a tinkertoy in 6 years, and it will be so because every year will see advances beyond the previous version. People act as if the iPhone will never be improved, the way they bitch it up.

Apple had a lame event, but let's wait until WWDC before we make a judgement.

Really? Seems most people thought it was enthusing.
I thought it was pretty good, though the first part was pretty tedious.

If I sign up, pay and download the 3.0 beta, can I them use it on working phone and get MMS now?

THEY FIXED IT!!!!!!!!!

Now I only have to jailbreak for AFP, Cycorder, & Themes!

-and (don't hold your breath waiting for App-Store versions):

AdBlock
Flashlight (at least 3 times brighter than App Store approved versions)
ImaSafari
LockDockBar
LogoMe
mCoolPhone
MobileTerminal
MxTube
Netatalk
Notifier
OpenSSH
PdaNet
Quick Dismiss
QuickUnlock
SBSettings
UserAgent Faker
Volume Boost
WeatherIcon

ect, ect, ect...

Hopefully all the new developer tools and APIs will mean much better quality apps in the App Store.

I just hope Apple forces developers who create paid add-ons or additions to their apps to reveal this fully in the pricing and description of the app. I would be not too pleased to buy an app for $1.99 only to find out I need to purchase an additional "features pack" for $19.99 to make it fully work. However, this might be an easy way for developers to create "demo" versions of apps that can then be unlocked by purchasing it from within the app.

It will be exciting to see how this impacts apps on the iPhone! Apple appears to be taking a good thing and are making it much better.

I might pay the 10 bucks if spotlight works with music, its something I always wanted and it puzzles me that they havent implemented such a simple feature yet. Otherwise its a pretty boring update, Palm is probably feeling pretty confident right now.

I was really hoping that they would allow you to disable the "unlock" screen. That is just such a stupid and useless screen that makes using it really frustrating at times, the home button is PLENTY protection from accidents. Seriously, does Apple use their own products? How can anyone not hate that screen after 1 day? Maybe they will support it but it wasnt a feature worth mentioning...

I don't own an iPhone, so I don't have much to complain about really...

But it seems to me that apple has done a pretty good job. If you consider the fact that they have only been in the cell phone industry for months, they've made a HUGE impact on raising the standards for user friendly smart phones. Sure, they didn't get all the phone stuff right the first time; but they were basically just adding a phone to an iPod touch at the time (which was huge in itself for the mobile entertainment biz).

They came in the back door on the cell phone industry, but they seem to be catching on fast. If the thing ever comes to Verizon for a reasonable price, I’ll probably get one. I know, I know, there’s all those network limitations (I don’t know the acronyms and I’m not going to pretend to know what they mean: EVDO? CDMA? WWJD?)

I don't see why you can't like Apple products and also look forward to switching to the Pre. There are several things that bug me about the iPhone, but I've been pretty happy with it. It's the best phone I've ever used, and I definitely have gotten my money's worth out of the 4 I have gone through. I always like to bear in mind that they cost me half of what iPaqs used to cost (and boy did they suck!).

And I think the Pre is going to be big, if released on non-Sprint networks. The physical keyboard alone is going to drive a lot of people to it. Search looks perfect and is, quite frankly, something Apple should be ashamed of not getting right because the existing Spotlight in OS X alone is reason enough for me to never want to use another computer. Also notifications on the Pre look far superior to the iPhone's pop-ups.

Ultimately I don't think the Pre, or anything else, is an iPhone killer. It's much more likely to hurt Blackberry sales, and drive Apple to make significant improvements to the iPhone.

I think we should all be thankful for the Pre because Apple is all too content to innovate in slow increments when unchallenged, despite its ability to move faster. I believe iPhone 3.0 is proof of that.

...Cause some people have children that like to pick up their technology and play with it

Summer! That tickles the patience of many… :-(
Roughly two-and-a-half to five-and-a-half months from now! That's a tease!

Upon the other hand, the 3.0 appears quite exciting! Compliments to Apple!

Nope, Apple said if its free it has to stay free so no in-app store to go from free demo to a full version. There may be another way depending on the other purchase options that Apple will allow but I haven't looked at those closely yet.

That depends on your previous phone.

Not trying to be a smart @$$, but Treo and WiMo users lost a LOT of functionality with the 2G and 3G iPhone. Some lost functionality and gained an expensive bill.

Even now, Treo and WiMo users still can't go to the iPhone and open and edit and save MS Office documents and even organize their contacts by groups or mass delete emails, etc.

Just saying. :p
Yes they can
DS, I organize my contacts by groups, mass delete emails, and can open MS Office documents in a variety of applications using my iPhone. While, AFAIK, "editing" an MS document is only currently available through Google on the iPhone (requiring wireless connectivity), I'm highly skeptical of whether anyone would truly NEED to edit a complex Word of Excel document using a phone. There's an app for almost everything. I'm sure Office Mobile solutions are well on their way.

I would believe that utilizing just the home button would not be sufficient enough. I recall many individual "pocket dialing" with Nokia phone's in the day. A non-flip phone needs a better system to keep from accidental usage. It would be far too easy to hit the home button while in your pants pocket or bag, allowing the touch screen to be accessed.
