The best method I can figure is by holding down the Home button and tapping the screen at the start point and then at the end point. At which time a message appears asking you if you want to cut or copy the text.

Pasting would be performed by holding down the Home button and then double-tapping at the correct location. This does limit it to text only, and not to images, but I think Apple should take baby steps with this as there is no easy solution that is going to be as user-friendly as using a physical keyboard and mouse.

I think there needs to be a robust Clipboard for the iPhone that you can access like the Notes app. Meaning, a clipboard that holds multiple data sets in memory and one that can be manually edited for future use and quick access pasting.

Agggg this is too complicated. Apple wouldn't do something close to Windows Mobile. iPhone is a very simple product, and Apple must find a very simple way to copy and paste.

But really, i don't really need it. I would love to see some stability in 2.0 first and fix ALL of the bugs. For example my whole phone is in Russian and I don't know WHO was the translator. Its so wrong. It could be so much easier! Why not hire a true person who speaks the language and have them check for bugs and errors.

Doubt that, 90% of the problems I've had are all on Apple's part... Lagging default apps, maps loading extremely sluggishly, needing to restart the device couple of times a day because it starts crawling while doing anything. Scrolling lists is extremely jerky/laggy... the list goes on and has nothing to do w/ 3rd party apps. If anything the apps worked perfectly fine for me for the most part...
Note, all of these could be caused by apps for a variety of reasons.

Already seen a couple of apps with updates to fix things that might be causing system level issues/interrupts/errors.

FWIW, memory leaks can contribute to issues like you mention. Also, how much storage space do you have available on your iPhone/Touch? With version 1.0, I had my Touch maxed out and had issues with the OS. As soon as I freed up some space, things worked much better.

Regardless, stability or lack thereof that some are experiencing is frustrating and needs to be addressed.

Same here.
It feels like a Commodore 64.
Man I'm telling you all. Quality of Apple is no longer the same and with the volume they are dealing with it won't get any better.
Just look at this site. So many fanbois that will take everything that has a apple logo no matter if it works or not.

Boy, that is about the most Windows-like solution I have heard.

Are you sure that we couldn't also get the volume controls and the speaker switch involved there too?

Maybe click and drag with your tongue?

Calm down.

Version 2.0 is working fine for some.

Part of the problem is 3rd party apps.

It will get better.

I am perfectly calm, thank you. And please don't tell me how I should express myself or how I should I feel. You would have to agree that Apple seems to be biting off more than it can chew these days. The 2.0 software is buggy for many, many people. The MobileMe rollout has been an embarrassment. And the 3G launch was marred by server issues that could have probably been avoided if Apple had gotten the 2.0 software out to 1rst generation iPhone owners weeks in advance. They are cutting timelines too close and the quality is suffering. And I know it will get better. I guess I just expect more from Apple to begin with.

2.0: Unstable/Crashes/Restarts

Just to voice the stability issues again !!
I have never JB'd my iPhone. 2.0 gives me 1-2 restarts every day. Safari crashes 5-10 times a day. Some apps crash as well. Overall when demonstrating all the cool apps (yes, some are really good) there are chances that you might be embarrassed when you get a black out and restart !
Yeah, you can say "Ohh, btw.. this also restarts the phone" :D:cool:
Some apps are written poorly and cause the phone to heat up a bit (bad power management/over utilization of the processor ?) I hope Apple comes up with a way to improve things.

I don't believe Apple when they say it was "low" on their priority list. In creating a revolutionary new GUI for your touch-screen mobile phone, you must anticipate the need for cut/copy/paste, right? I mean that MUST have been part of their set of core features. How could it not be? Blackberries have the feature, Windows Mobile has the feature.

I suspect there is more involved in the delay, such as the fact that Apple has been trying to find an intuitive way to implement the feature. I think it's a technical issue, or a horrible omission that they are now scrambling to implement.

I have been out of the loop with the new iPhone update. What type of bugs are there? I was going to wait to upgrade my phone because of the demands. However, it sounds like there are a few more issues.

Getting stressed over it, however, doesn't help much.

Just because a person speaks with passion regarding issues with something they paid good money for hardly makes them stressed. 10 years ago I didn't even have a phone. I am not going to be stressed about it. I strive for excellence in my life. Apple used to provide that. As they grow larger their capacity for excellence is diminished. I've seen it other industries, I had hoped I wouldn't see it with Apple! Such is success.

F**k cut and paste. Low on the list of priorities? How about just getting this 2.0 software to some level of stability. 2.0, as it is, should never have been released into the wild. Apple is pushing too fast and dropping the ball more and more!

I would also love for them to make to 2.0 a lil more stable. I have to reboot my phone on a daily basis now which i never had to do before the update.

Copy and paste would be pretty cool tho.

Jay.

Talk about hyperbole. I use the one big button in a static motion and that leads you to using one's tongue? Without a stylus and an options menu you are going to have to use a combination, like with taking a snapshot. If you have an easier solution that holding down the home button with one finger and clicking on text with another, go ahead and post it.

There are some stability issues such as the iPhone/Touch restarting automatically (by itself) or freezing. Most attribute this issue with the recent update.

While not an iPhone/Touch developer, past experience makes me think there are some memory related issues with the OS and apps that need to be resolved. Just my observations as someone who used to be a developer a few years ago.

FWIW, with version 1.0 and a very full Touch, I experienced some of the same problems. After deleting some music and video files, everything worked much better. Another memory issue indicator IMHO.

Anyhow, the update seems to be working for some and not for others. I am sure Apple is working hard to fix the issues from their side. I am also sure that app makers are doing the same, hence the large number of app updates.

It will be great to have copy/paste when it does come out in the 2.0.1 firmware update.

But all the people complaining about how they want stability first really need to relax. In case you guys don't remember last year when the 1st gen iPhone came out with the 1.0 firmware it was almost as buggy as this 2.0 firmware. Compounding the problems this time around are all the 3rd party applications. The fact that they are already beta testing the 2.0.1 firmware and adding new features as well is amazing. I have never received this level of support before from any other cell phone manufacturer, for free!

Also I think people need to realize that Apple is now focusing more attention on trying to gain market share. And that means some products will be released before they have been perfected in software. It is easy for Apple to get the hardware perfect first and then release software updates later to fix any software problems that might occur.

Interesting observation.

My regular cell phone would freeze, but never received any updates from DoCoMo.

Software/Firmware updates are a nice way to keep things running smooth. :)

It just takes time. :(
