Daylight savings is the dumbest and most annoying concept ever.

Twice a year the entire population has to run around like idiots and adjust billions of clock radios, microwave ovens, wristwatches, car clocks and umpteen other just so we can collectively fool ourselves into believing that the time isn't really the time. How about we all arbitrarily pretend that it's 10 years ago, we'll all be so much younger... yep, it's 1998, because I said so.

not every country has daylight savings. as a matter of fact it is a US thing and of all the countries i have been to America is the only one that used that.

Anyways it is already 0751 here in Japan and no update so, no, they are not releasing per time zone. would be nice though, that is the first thing i did when i woke up this morning was check.

well, all the European Union uses daylight saving time, so do Australia, AFAIK.

Hardly a US thing as a matter of fact, lol. (Whoever was talking about ethnocentricity being a pasttime over there.. =P )

Blame William Willet :p.

It makes sense, though. Why sleep while it's still light out? And why wake up when it's still dark?

Here in Holland (Netherlands) its 1:04 AM Friday.

Nothing to see here:eek:

When has Europe ever gotten anything from Apple first? I recall a thread somewhere with a bunch of pissed off Americans that Europe got some product first but can't remember exactly what it was.

I am pretty sure they got the iphone first. I even remember companies sending people over there to get their hands on them. They had pics up before our stores were even open yet and people even had it taken apart.

Daylight savings time was adopted to allow the American farming industry extra light in the evening to give them a longer work day.

Well... I was born and raised in northern Sweden, a stone's throw from the Arctic Circle. In June, the sun would set at 11:45 PM and rise at 12:15 AM. When you have 24 hours of daylight and 23.5 hours of sun, nap time is whenever you pull down the blinds, and DST is little more than a cruel joke. ;)

Ummm are you sure? the iPhone was launched June 29 07 and I am pretty certain the next place it was launched was England months after. I could be wrong.

But you assume that the rest of the world is also on Daylight Savings Time, which the Southern Hemisphere isn't. Hence why I referenced AEST: Australian Eastern Standard Time, e.g. Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra. Currently they are GMT +9 (at least until October/November). So while we're on DST, they aren't, and vice versa.

Hey, I didn't assume anything. I specifically said I was speaking only for the US. But, as someone correctly pointed out Arizona and a bunch of territories don't use DST either.

From reading all the posts there isn't much hope in some type of earth shattering add on coming with this new software, just bug fixes mostly?

Oh, well the 3G was available in NZ first if i remember correctly. Although it was available in the USA the same day.

You can add Hawaii to that list as well. They do not change times. Actually if you look at the history of it, it is kinda interesting. It was initially developed for the agriculture workers as they based their work time on the daylight hours.

Ahh, here it's about half and half, so they wanted to keep it about the same.

The iPhone 3G was released in New Zealand at 12:01 AM local time.

Engadget flew out there.

Right, but if we went by that same logic, then the European countries would already have the update available to them if the download was to go live at midnight. So again, my guess is that the update goes live sometime tomorrow afternoon like the previous updates. I hope I am wrong though. :)

That's correct, although personally I think it's a good sign that they're focusing on stability and performance rather than features. That's exactly what they're doing with the next version of OS X as well. If Apple wants to live up to the "it just works" moniker, they can't keep cramming in new features, they must first make sure that whatever they already have is virtually flawless.

I would say if it was available to all of those countries at the same time in their perspective time zones that the launch was simultaneous.

AEST is current for all eastern states, which is GMT+10
In summer most eastern states go to AEDST which is +11, while Queensland remains on AEST for the entire year.

GMT+9 is not in Australia.

2.1 Firmware is probably not ready yet, apple is finishing building it :) they got till 11:59pm in UTC (GMT-12) to finish it

Thanks for updating that. I thought it was the other way around because they're currently 15 ahead of CDT, but will be 17 ahead of CST when the midwestern US drops off of DST.

It isn't? GMT+9 would be somewhere around Perth, wouldn't it? If all of the eastern states are GMT+10.. is S. Australia GMT +8.5? I know they are 30 minutes behind Victoria.. does that mean Western Australia is 1.5 behind South Australia?

Totally offtopic here, I know!
