Why do people still got to movie theaters? Cost of the ticket alone is a rip off. Not to mention those annoying people who use their cellphone during the movie. I'd much rather use my huge 48" LCD and watch it under my own direction.

You are reading it right. 50 dollars for one (1!) movie.
And it is a rental so you get to watch it one time.

I'll continue to wait until the movie is released to iTunes for outright purchase for half that price.

I don't understand what it means to "rent" a sequence of bytes. There is no tangible object to declare ownership of nor is there a means for the alleged 'owner' to recover their 'property'. It always sounded like an attempt to apply and enforce physical world concepts in the digital world where such limitations do not exist. The application of a 'rental' is purely artificial.

Yes, it is true. $50 per movie rental. This isn't a service for one person to rent a movie to stay in. Its for families. Where Mom and Dad taking the kids to the theater costs $50 in tickets alone. Then of course the kids want popcorn and soda for another $30. Plus drive time, and while we're out we might as well get lunch.

$50 and 2 bags of microwave popcorn will be much cheaper for families than the full blown movie experience.
With the little difference you are not in a theater but watching a film for 50 bucks at home on your telly like we do since decades for 2 to 5 dollar rental fee. Absurd!

Dang! What are you buying? Tickets are $9.50-$12 here depending on if you choose a theater with reclining chairs. Then my gf wants popcorn and a drink that is around $10-$12. Both of us spend about $35 combined.
Dang! Where are you buying tickets. Except for IMAX and Dolby my AMC has all reserved seating with power recliners starting at $5.00 for matinee

Guess I'm the only super cheap scape here. I wait till Yify release a download for free

Last time I went to the movies was when the man of steel came out.
You watch Yify releases? Dude. It's one thing to admit you're a pirate, but not a low-quality pirate! Suck it up and download the blu-ray remuxes! ;)

And you don't have to get there an hour before it starts to get 4 seats together in a reasonable row... Definitely worth it, especially in NY.
Our neighborhood Cinemark is now 100% reserved premium recliner seats. You have to plan ahead for popular movies, but you know what you're going to get before you get to the theater. It's a much better experience.

I already pay for $30 per ticket for those premium recliners seats plus more for cloncessions, so if I can pay the same for a newly released movie at home I would probably go for something like this.
Wow. They charge a huge premium for what are now considered standard seats elsewhere?

They use DRM to kill your ability to play the video again or after a week, whichever comes first. Think of it as the equivalent to pay per view on cable.

Of course there is software out that allows for itunes rentals to have the drm stripped. The only disadvantage I can think of is not having access to the video on iCloud on the Apple TV and iTunes to play the video without downloading it. I don't agree with this use of stripping the drm from iTunes videos but it is possible.

There are many theaters in the city now that have reserved seating. My personal fave is the one in Chelsea. Comfortable seats with ample leg room. But if you're a family of 4 with kids, the $50 rental fee is a better value for you and the single/coupled New Yorkers will appreciate the reduction of kids in the theaters. (This is isn't an I Hate Kids post but just a truism in the city.)

I'm not only against this, but I'm against movies releasing within the same 12 month window of the cinema run. The theater industry is a shell of it's former self because movies get released too soon. If they start coming out a few weeks down the road to rent, people will all but stop going and the whole thing will collapse.

I like going to the movies... so I don't want that to happen.

I'd actually be okay with this. Theatres ain't getting cheaper for us as a family (i have three kids) especially when you make a night out of it and factor in a restaurant and/or over-priced snacks from the candy bar we're talking over $100AUD. Couple that with a cinema full of talking teenagers and wankers using their phones and on the whole, I'd rather be in my own house in front of my 4K tele.

$50, a home-delivered pizza, a bag of M&Ms from the supermarket and the ability to pause when my kids need a toilet break sounds like a much better deal.

Not for $50, but I'm kind of over the theatre experience, which is sad. Even with all the improvements made like reclining chairs, screen/sound, etc. I'm just not into it. Last time I went everyone was reclined practically flat including some strange guy right next to me. I thought he should've at least bought me a drink first..

How sad. Though I don't go to the movies as often as I wish, I feel you can't beat the big screen and sound - that's what movies were made for!

I will admit that we don't do the movies out anymore. It's more fun in the winter when there isn't much to do outside. The fundamental problem I see is that when we're home, there are many more options to watch aside from the $50 movie. It's somehow easier to justify spending that kind of money because you're "going out." You know? It's an activity.

Sure, we order food delivered, pop open a bottle and enjoy a movie at home. But there is something different about going to iPic and enjoying the food, wine and the movie over there. No dishes to clean. No interruptions.

Again, to each his own. Some people will love this and others will say "meh."
I agree and do it both ways depending on the mood and company I'm with. There is also something to be said about watching new releases still in theaters but from home. We're all assuming that it will translate into this worthwhile experience automatically but we might all take that fact for granted and end up happily spending a little more to see a new release in a public theater space instead. This would be the first time we all have the option to watch a new release in our homes so who knows...

We have a 48" 1080P and a 2.1 sound in the living room. It's not even close to the latest and greatest let alone biggest but watching movies and TV from the Apple TV 4 is perfectly fine on it. If theaters went away and movies where released directly to shops like iTunes for $25 to keep forever just like now I'd be fine with it.

Too many movies are considered a flop that just happen to recoup and make a profit when released to video. Wake up and read the writing on the wall Hollywood. Theaters like drive ins are done.

If this really takes off I can see my local cinema doubling the current ticket price as the fall off in revenue from week 3 will "force" their hand.

Also $50! Not a chance.

Um... that's not how supply and demand work. They will need to lower their prices if it's popular.

That's a good deal. The theater near me that doesn't have reclining seats is $5.40 for a matinee. The one that does have those seats doesn't give much of a discount. They go from $12 to $10.58 for an earlier showing.

LOLOL It's $12 for Netflix with a very limited selection of movies. What makes you think it would be $10-$12 for every movie and tv show????

I would definitely pay $10-12/month for unlimited movies from ITunes, I would also buy an AppleTV in that case. $50/movie isn't going to fly for my use case though, my wife isn't much of a movie fan and my son is currently too young to pay any attention to movies.

Amazon and Netflix have a very limited selection of movies. Typically less then 400 at a time. It also changes monthly. iTunes has every movie and tv show. Spotify has yet to make even $1 in profit and would have gone completely under next year if they didn't just get another round of investor funding.

Netflix manage it for £7/month, Amazon manage it for £6.58/month, Spotify is £10 - so for a complete sub inc movies, TV shows and Music including all new releases I'd say £30-35 is reasonable.

Wow. In Delaware movie tickets are $14 and IMAX is $18. 3D IMAX is $22

Going to the movies for under $30 is possible. If you go to an early show

Agreed. Here in my area a regular ticket is like $10/IMAX i think might be $15 and Dolby (not worth it) could be like $13. I don't pay any of those. I pay $5 at the matinee. It's the same movie whether it's $5 or $15

Apparently they're not putting too much value on their content since people continue to go to them. Also, making movies is a risky business with an investment that can run in the hundreds of millions where you *hope* you will profit.

Seriously!? Living in NY is way more expensive than I thought. 180 dollars for a family of four to go to a movie with concessions?! I hope those concessions are steak dinners at least!
This price would also be a ripoff for me. I think studios put too much value on their content. Leading to more piracy.

Apparently you don't live in a major city. You don't have an option to go to a theater that doesn't have paid parking.

Here is what you do. Don't buy over priced snacks for $7 a bag. Bring some of your own candy and a soda/water. Parking... you have to pay for parking at your theater? I would recommend a different theater.

I never said anything about it being $10-12, or even it being a possibility of happening, I said I would pay that. You're welcome to disagree that you would pay that. I also wouldn't care if it was a "Movie Only" tier for that type of price.

Ticket sales are declining. Which is why Hollywood is pushing for another option. These prices are not going to be enticing to a lot of people.

Like has been rehashed over and over in this thread, that completely depends on how many people are in the family. Here in way upstate NY tickets are $10.20 a head so three people and some concessions are break even at $50.
