So the supposed $1400 rumor of this new iPhone will include what new? OLED, which was in Samsungs device for 650 this year? Reduced Bezels? Also in samsungs device this year for 650.

So what am I paying double the price of a base iPhone for?

This is a ground-up redesign of iPhone. Which means if there were Touch ID (there isn't), it would have been an integral part of the design from the start.

The reason for all the confusion over the last few months is because Touch ID was never part of the product.

Face ID is the way forward, it will be virtually indistinguishable in term of user experience, and will probably be even better in a few ways.

$969 for 128 GB
$1069 for 256 GB.

It is a $100 premium over the 7 Plus. Not sure where you learned math.

And you do?! Do you secretly work for Apple?

Faces are MUCH more complex than two-dimensional images of a fingerprint, and like I said before there are factors that change the way you look daily (glasses, hairstyling/haircut, shaving/growing a beard, makeup, lighting, etc.). We as humans have trouble recognizing people who go from full bearded to completely shaven overnight, you think a computer is going to see through that?

Windows Hello recognizes me in all stages of shaved/unshaved. I've had long hair/short hair. Sometimes I wear my RX glasses for close distances, often I do not. I'll often wear a beanie hat as well. Yes, it works in absolute pitch black too. IR doesn't use visible light to work.

It has also been shown to tell the difference between identical twins with perfect accuracy.

Every time you sign on it adds info to the profile of your face. So it even learns as you age. Maybe you could trip it up by growing an 8-inch beard, but not if you used the device weekly during the process of growing the beard.

Complaints about accuracy, speed, light needed have already been addressed by Microsoft's implementation, and I don't think I need to convince people on here that Apple should be able to do even better.

The REAL complaint is angle of view/distance. Microsoft's implementation doesn't work outside of the range you'd be using a laptop / when standing above the camera. It's less noticeable on a Surface because you're likely to be within the usable range, but we tend to hold our phones much more casually. This is the area Apple would have to make strides. Much wider angles.

IF the iPhone X ditches Touch ID (which we still do not have any conclusive proof or leaks of), for face recognition AND the banks do not support it in Apple Pay, Apple will just get up on that stage and tell you to buy an Apple Watch to use Apple Pay with all those shop terminals!
I mean they DID tell us to just buy the Apple iPhone charging dock to get a headphone jack on the iPhone 7....

He said BASE model. You know, the one that starts at $749?

And there is no confusion--just people refusing to accept what is truth. You can't get any clearer verification than a piece of iOS software.

And as for whether or not Face ID (or whatever it's called) will be better than Touch ID...the jury is still out on that. Saying that it is before anyway has actually used it is just blind fanaticism. Only time will tell.

Im not at all worried about no touch-id, the face-ID will either be equally good or better. I remember how worried I was about Touch ID, how secure and reliable it would be etc. I was wrong of course, apple made it work. I have no reason to believe the experience would be any different with face recognition. If there is one thing I appreciate about apple, it's that they do not implement something unless it works well. Even if that means they are "late" to adopt the newest features.

Physics? Something like unlocking the phone in the pocket. I guess not possible with facial recognition. ;-)

I'm not sure why one would want to be unlocking the phone while in their pocket.. I guess there's going to be some very random use case for that, but I can't imagine it's used much at all.

Still, we don't know what Apple is up to. Just look at how the ARKit stuff on existing hardware (using just cameras) has been blowing people away. For all we know, facial recognition could be faster than touch ID.

I quite like that split status bar, actually. At first first I thought it would be problem when using the phone upside down, but then I noticed, there's no 180° rotation now, either.
That facial recognition thing bothers me, though. Holding the phone up to my face unlock seems stupid. To me that would probably mean no deal or going back to passcode.

Are the laws different in the US? In the UK you can not touch your phone at all when driving. Nor should you.
With facial recognition you will be able to unlock it without touching anything. If anything thatsa easier.

Only if the phone is in front of you. That would mean it is blocking your view of the road.

FaceID would suck. What about low light? Are we going to be blinded by a frontal flash every time we want to open the phone at night? TouchID built into the glass would truly be something special. It's a shame they can't seem to find a way to make it work despite having some of the best engineers working for them. If Jobs were alive he would not accept anything less. Back when Steve was in charge and healthy almost everything was ready to ship right after the keynotes. Now every new product has a month-3 month delay until there is enough stock. They still cannot produce enough AirPods. I don't want a pair but it's ridiculous that the 7 plus has been out for almost 11 months and the AirPods are perpetually on back order. Either the supply is artificially being limited to drive up demand or they are just incompetent.

For better or worse, this will likely be much more interesting than the release of the 7, which I think is a solid phone by pretty boring in terms of new hawtness. And I don't think that's bad for the product actually, but it does make the actual keynote kinda boring. I just hope they don't give the peanut gallery more unnecessary fodder. The "courage" joke was boring within a day of the release. It's still boring.

Mmm...no. Saying that before seeing the product is easy based on a number of givens and assumptions. This isn't some fly by night company. If Apple is replacing Touch ID with Face ID, there are a number of givens, because they wouldn't be doing so in the first place, if those givens were not true.

I'll concede that based on the givens, we know it will be at least equivalent. Based on some reasonable assumption, I can see how it will be better. Example: With Touch ID you need to position your finger properly in the precise location of the sensor. With Face ID, you'll probably be able to be far less precise when it comes to the activating gesture that starts a scan. It will work with gloves or sweaty hands. etc.

No TouchID = no sale.

I’ve been waiting to upgrade to this device, but I’d rather let it flop and wait for the iPhone 11, when TouchID returns due to customer demand.

Such a disappointment.

Haha, maybe Apple will reverse course now that you won't be buying. The best selling iPhone of all time will be such a flop, not sure the company will survive. Who knows? Maybe Face ID ends up being better than Touch ID? Could you imagine?

I don’t expect Apple to change course because of me, but at the same time I refuse to believe that Apple has a facial recognition system which is of comparable accuracy to TouchID while accounting for all lighting conditions, facial hair variations and facial expressions. If they did, that technology alone would be one of the most valuable parts of the company.

So either Apple has some unicorn technology, or they are prioritising aesthetics over usability. That’s not an Apple product I’m interested in. I’d prefer a phone with regular screen and TouchID to a half-baked marketing exercise.

I also often use my phone at times when I can’t literally pull it to my face - maybe I’m trying to be discreet about using it, for example, or maybe I’m reaching over to it.

For those who say you can use apple pay with passcode, surely that defeats the point of contactless payment. I'd end up with a better user experience from the plastic bank card in my wallet that costs pennies to make and I get for free.

I honestly think that Touch ID will be there in some form come September.

Finally the rumour mill is heating up after months of bezel and top notch talk! It's starting to feel like an iPhone launch again!

P.s. Has the UK preorder thread started? :)

Apparently there are a number of facial recognition features from other companies that have been received very well. I’d have to think that Apple, with their expertise and the companies they purchased and integrated, could put out a more compelling feature. Either way, stomping your feet and saying you won’t buy really doesn’t accomplish a whole lot. Let’s just wait and see what they come up with. Maybe it’s better? The good thing is you will be able to buy your phone with a normal screen and Touch ID for at least a few more years. I have a feeling Apple will deliver though.

That and the headphone jack, right? :D

Ever heard of stupid cows offer cow milk?
It's our own fault by tolerating Apples product prices and now we have to pay for it...

Samsung also allows you to double tap the home button to wake up the screen to the lock screen and you can have it so the home button always stays lit.

Correct. I had an S8+ for about 4 months and used the Always On Display, so I had the clock and notifications always showing on the screen. Was very handy, and hardly affected the battery. Would be nice to see it in the next iPhone.
