If the TV does AirPlay - as more and more are doing these days - then it could work, without an ApoleTV.
Is audio and TV image in sync? I know iOS, iPadOS and Macs delay video playback to match audio delay. Is this the case on an Airplay TV? Does it buffer the TV?

That I can’t answer. My TV has AirPlay support, but I’ve never enabled it because I’ll either AirPlay to the AppleTV, which is the TV’s primary source, or the Sonos Arc, which is where all the TV sound goes anyway, over HDMI-ARC.

You can make a “stereo pair” from the original HomePods as well as the Mini. (It’s right there in HomeKit settings app). Buy 2 for your TV. 😉

Yeah but with no Auxiliary In of any kind (Optical or otherwise.) there isn't really a way for me to pipe audio to them.

This explains where all the day 1 orders went. They’ve all been shipped to Apple stores.
Apple always saves some stock for their stores. So does everyone else. You could get the PS5 at Target, even though pre-orders online for deliver were sold out, for example.

Never been around for an Apple product launch? While iPhone availability times may be out from launch day, you can still go pick one up at the Apple Store on launch day most of the time. That's been true for nearly 10 years.

I just picked up two white ones, and a friend I was with two space grey. I’m looking forward to seeing how they sound as a pair.

Kind of annoying my 8:02AM pre-order day order is arriving Thursday when I can now walk in to our local Apple store and buy one.
But at least you can buy one.
Apple does not sell the HomePod in New Zealand.

Now here is the funny part:
Things that meet regs in Australia also meet regs in New Zealand, in fact most of our regs for electrical/electronics are AU/NZ regs. So they are compliant in NZ.

Our plugs and power supply are identical.

The Australian online store/warehouse is the same physical warehouse for New Zealand.

So it's a case of WTF Apple, seriously WTF.

I’m quite aware of that. They save some stock. However, this is different. I was in 1min after preorder started and the delivery dates were already 11/17-11/19 (paid express shipping was 11/16). I also ordered two iPhone 12 pro Max and got those on launch day. Assuming they keep the same proportion of all products in store stock for launch day (may be an incorrect assumption), there’s no way homepod mini sold out in 1min. It seems like Apple just decided to have more in-store stock available than usual.

My order was for 2 space gray Homepod Minis at 8:09AM pre-order day is still processing and says delivery Nov 17 - Nov 19. Is yours still processing or preparing for shipment?

Mine shipped yesterday. Delivers Wednesday. Although I got impatient and just went and picked one up at the Apple store 😁

My initial impression so far is the sound quality is slightly better than my newer echo dot devices but not by much - if you're listening to HomePod mini from a distance you‘d be hard pressed to tell if it’s a newer echo dot vs HomePod mini. I think the SQ is sufficient to have sitting on a nightstand or in a dorm room, but a larger space demands the regular homepod.

In store pickup needs your local Apple Stores to be open. Mine haven't been except for a couple of weeks in the middle of this mess. I've been waiting forever to take an iPad in to be looked at, maybe in 2022 I'll get the chance.

Sonos Move.

WiFi, AirPlay2, Bluetooth, can work as part of a Sonos network or separately, portable, 11 hours of battery life, water resistant, purported to have very respectable sound, voice assistants (Google or Alexa, alas no built-in support for Siri, but that’s as much Apple’s fault as Sonos’- also, the microphone can be muted, and won’t be listening unless you connect it to Google or Alexa), active/constant adaptation to the surrounding environment (similar to full-size HomePod, Sonos calls it TruePlay), and it connects to a positively ridiculous number of streaming services (something you’ll never get with HomePod).
I see what you're going for... but Sonos Move is $400 regular price, it's not even a remote comparison.

I ordered mine from Best Buy Canada and just received it this afternoon. I’m surprised by the sound, it’s much better than my 2nd gen Google Nest Mini and my third generation Echo Dot. I haven’t tested it enough to compare it to my Sonos One yet, but I’m pretty happy with it. And yes, I like to try out all of the assistants 🙂

The only strange thing is, it has an odd, new carpet type of smell to it. Anyone else noticed that? I’m sure it will go away in time, but it’s potent.

I can already see me getting like 6 of these for gifts and myself...
Man ... these are going to be THE stocking stuffers for EVERY Mac and iPhone user out there. Honestly I think the 'Other' category will get THE biggest boost from the HomePod mini this year more than the iOS & iPad segment. Mac Segment may just also get some hustle but not the current quarter next quarter when an iMac launches or the quarter after then BOOM that will stomp feet like a dance-hall party!

2x is going to my sister ... me I'm keeping a keen eye on another HomePod deal ($200CAN ) from an android user that preferred Sonos. It was a gift and since he's on Android + Spotify makes sense for him, made sense for me :D

All in all every Mac & iPhone user pretty much will be Happy Happy Joy Joy with these as gifts in their home.

why, this is quite provocative...

The two I ordered for Christmas presents have turned-up a day early, but I also picked one up from the Apple Store this morning for my office. I had a HomePod in there, but want to try it as a stereo pair with the Apple TV to see how the Dolby Atmos support works.

First impressions... it really does sound good for the size of the device. Its a much better size actually for this smaller room than the big HomePod. Main use case is playing music and it does that very well - all the instruments are really clear and well defined, even as you push the volume up.

What it lacks compared to the HomePod is the depth of bass which is to be expected given the size of it.

Also, its really small and light, much smaller than I thought it would be. Nice to have a usb-c cable on it - I'm guessing you could make this pretty portable with a usb battery pack.
