Oh, oh. I have the volume "buttons" constantly on and warm screen issue on OGs default output connected to Apple TV 4K issue. My HomePods are on 14.6.

All HomePods unplugged until this is addressed somehow.
Hey you should read my comment above!
If you’re seeing flashing volume buttons, there is no recovery! The logic board is fried, you have to call Apple Support and keeping calling until you get a Senior Advisor to replace it at no cost.

I know, I know, it's harsh to say it, but any dork who bought 19 HomePods kinda deserves this. For the amount of money he spent he could have had WAY better audio, and a system that wasn't locked into Apple's limited ecosystem. Now his HomePods are just ... LOCKED. LOL.
OK, I'm going to be on timeout for a few days after this post, but:

Who the heck are you to decide how this guy should be living his life? You have no idea how his family uses those devices, whether it is in a single house or multiple in a compound, whether they use it for intercom or whatever.

Sentient beings are capable of mentally viewing things from another's perspective. Since you and your likes can't seem to do that, how about just .... shut your piehole.

Gosh, I can think of dozens of reasons that could be a good idea.

For the record I have 2 full-sized HomePods bought 6 months separate from each other but both over a year ago. Been nothing but great -- but I did not set them as stereo pair and I do not tie them to my appletv (Sonos beam does that). I do have a HomePod mini for a couple months now and so far for me it's basically useless for c conference calls but fine as a mono speaker on my desk.....

Mine died on 14.6 a few days after getting a new Apple TV 4K Gen2

Yes I used the Apple TV to stream music around the house. I think it could be related to the Apple TV as a possible suspect. Have left if powered off for a few weeks and still no start-up. Apple left me no choice but to buy a HomePod mini - it is noticeably inferior in pickup up Hey Siri as well as audio quality.

Original HomePod models appear to be mysteriously failing at an increasing rate, according to multiple MacRumors readers and complaints on Reddit and Twitter. Many of the HomePods that have suddenly stopped working were running the beta version of the HomePod 15 software, but some affected users had HomePods with the 14.6 software installed.

HomePod-Crash-Feature.jpg

MacRumors reader Jose said that his 18-month-old HomePod running the 14.6 update recently stopped working, and that's a common complaint across multiple Reddit threads that have been created over the course of the last few days.

In one notable case, a Reddit user with a total of 19 HomePods had seven of them stop working today. Four of those HomePods were running the HomePod 15 beta, and three of them were running the 14.6 software. That Reddit thread has complaints from several other HomePod owners who have had their HomePods die, and MacRumors reader Andre curated a list of Reddit complaints, all from users who have had their HomePods die over the course of the last few days.
  • Failure 1, 5 days ago - Reddit user UnderstandingNo5785 was running the HomePod 15 beta and found that his HomePod was hot on the top, which may have led to a logic board issue. Other Reddit users have speculated about the failures being caused by using the HomePod as a default speaker to the Apple TV while running the HomePod 15 beta
  • Failure 2, 2 days ago - A newly opened HomePod was set up, updated to 14.6, and then it lost connection. A hard reset caused the LED to turn red and the volume lights to blink, but it was non-functional.
  • Failure 3, 1 day ago - One of two HomePods set as a stereo pair suddenly stopped working. Both HomePods were running the 14.6 update. Broken HomePod doesn't power up and doesn't respond to touch.
  • Failure 3, today - 7 HomePods stop working, four on beta, three on 14.6.
  • Failure 4, June - A MacRumors reader in June had his HomePod die after a software update. The HomePod does not light up, does not work, and resets do not do anything.
  • HomePod Overheating - A Reddit user had a HomePod die when used in stereo mode with the Apple TV, and it was hot to the touch. It survived and continued to work, but the Reddit user has noticed the HomePods are still getting hot in stereo mode while running 14.6. This person says that their two other HomePods also died previously.
There are multiple other complaints from affected users in the comment sections of these threads, suggesting that this could be a widespread issue impacting many HomePod owners. Most of the impacted HomePods were used in stereo pairing mode and were linked to an Apple TV running the tvOS 14.6 update, including HomePods running the 14.6 and 15 software updates.

Since many of the HomePods affected have beta software installed, it's not a good idea to install the HomePod 15 update if you have a HomePod. HomePod software is distributed on an invite-only basis, but some third-party sites often make the beta available, and if you install an unauthorized beta, Apple is not going to be able to help.

One Reddit user says that a senior Apple technician advised them to unplug their HomePods and stop using them until the next software update. There are also many complaints from users who are running the 14.6 update, and unfortunately, Apple support has not been helpful for those who have a HomePod that was purchased more than a year ago. MacRumors reader Jose who initially contacted us said that Apple support was unable to offer help because his HomePod was out of warranty, and other HomePod owners have also had the same response.

Given the high number of sudden failures linked to 14.6, it's possible there's a hardware or software bug that's causing the problem, and if that's the case, Apple may eventually offer more help to HomePod users.

There is no known fix for HomePod users at this time, but avoiding beta software is recommended, and those who are highly concerned about failures may also want to stop using the HomePods in stereo mode for the time being until more information is available or a new software update is released to address any possible issues.

One MacRumors reader said that his failure was caused by a diode that failed and he was able to replace the diode and get the HomePod working again, but it is not clear if this is the same issue that others are experiencing nor is it reasonable for HomePod owners to have to tear down their speakers to solder on a new component.

Always a bad sign when a new product is a downgrade of the previous one.

Mine were also connected to the new Apple TV 4K ....no problems up to my seeing this thread. Have disconnected both and will wait it out. Between this and the 'Spatial/DolbyATM' issues with music on the iPhone....wonder if we're back into that Quality Control cess pit of a few years ago. You heard it here first : as other business are doing with their earnings etc...'It was COVID related..."! 'The Pandemic is responsible !'.

Interestingly enough, I sold a brand new one on Ebay, and the buyer returned it because it kept on crashing as he tried to set it up and install 14.6 - but he was attempting to add it as a stereo pair, connected to an Apple TV. I just got it back today, opened it up, and was able to set it up as a standalone with 0 issues. Works great. (And I know the buyer didn't just give up - he spent 47 minutes on the phone with apple support trying to get it to work).

So, I do think all of these issues are related to pairing them together and hooking them to the AppleTV with the new software. In theory, they should be able to figure this out and get it fixed.

Just being nosy: why the sell and at what price range?

Um, I'm back on this board after a week of work. I began with my HomePods, and a theory about that they weren't working. But then, my bluetooth headsets also stopped working, both PowerbeatsPro-- AirPods don't stay in my ears-- and a neat set of Headphones from Anker. None of them were working. So, what the hell was happening? Well, I was working long days, so I didn't have to dig into it. This morning, I a) remembered how I first installed the Powerbeats by opening the case, and pushing a button for 5 seconds. I erased the old settings, and did that. In a minute, my PowerbeatsPro were good as new. I went to the Apple TV. Powerbeats were there. I chose it, and ownership switched from my Mac to Apple TV, just as it should.

So, I thought, how about my HomePods? How do I reinitialize that? Not remembering, I tried the old "unplug it" idea. I did so. And when I replugged them, and chose them as my default sound output, there they were, good as new. I went to Music, played some spatial sound, works just like always. So, instead of "making up theories", maybe some of us should just go back to the tried and true: unplug and replug. Worked for me.

Well... let's just say I may have seen how much they were starting to pop off on Ebay and thought, I should grab a few on one of the sites I could find on google that was still selling them and resell them. It's basically 100% backfired on me though because everyone else had the same idea and values have started going back down. Basically got greedy and thought I'd make a little bit extra money (hey, we all have bills, right?) but so far... not so much. LOL. So much for that plan.

What's sad is that I haven't tried doing anything like this since the original Nintendo Wii came out way back in the day (which, that was successful). Please don't hate me. :)

(Oh - and honestly, I hadn't planned on wanting to sell them as much as I have to in order to make a little bit or even break even... I didn't realize how insane Ebay's fees had gotten. They basically take 13% now. I'd gladly sell them for less than I am trying to at the moment, but right now when they sell Ebay makes WAAAYYY more money off of them than I do)

One of my key requirements for any investment: that it has a MOAT! Anyway, hope you at least in time get your capital returned.

At the moment, barely (and I still have a few more to sell). Darn Ebay fees are killing me. Without the ebay fees, I could sell them for sooooo much less and have people buy them up. Ebay makes more money off of the sales than I do. Ebay now gets roughly 13% off the top. I had no idea before I bought them to sell; I don't remember the fees being so high back a few years ago.

Have you been trying to sell them locally?

I had a third one I sold (sort of wish I'd kept it and got a 4th now) very easily for $220 (I think - memory fuzzy) a while back (after the announcement of discontinuation though)

Just through Facebook marketplace, but I've had next to no interest in them there. Thought maybe they'd sell because there are hardly any even for sale on marketplace, but no go. Granted, I've focussed more on the shipping end on there rather than local. I may try changing that up and see.

Dumb ebay... I have to sell them for at least $405 plus shipping on Ebay to even break even on my cost on them (and that's me making 0. Dumb). Should've looked up fees before I purchased to sell; I was thinking if I sold them for $425 that I'd end up making at least $50. Not so much. Oh well, expensive lesson. Eventually I'll get them sold.

And also... sorry to hijack the convo on the forums about my selling woes!

All that to say - from my experience with just 1 of them, it looks like if you can just set up the problematic ones as standalone units (even on 14.6) they seem to work just fine. Stereo pair and/or connect it to a new Apple TV... not so much. At least in my case study of 1, which is not a scientific case study by any means.

Ha. I guess that's all on me. Technically all that info is out there and clear; I just didn't think to check ahead of time because 10 years or so ago when I was last selling things on ebay, the fees weren't as insane. They were never great, but they weren't like that.

I suspect that's the real reason why the prices on most of them on Ebay (especially new ones) are so high - it's not that everyone is trying to price gouge everyone, it's that everyone who was dumb like me wants to make their money back :)

It seems so short sighted of eBay to me.

I sell hardly at all on there anymore (been doing it since 2003) simply because of the fees and how many scammers are there.

They are killing the golden goose by just jacking fees endlessly.
I've had wonderful transactions on various reddit areas and lots and lots of stuff locally on CL/FB/OfferUp
