The iphone now allows the hotmail to go thru...not sure if you realized that or not.

Hotmail is now allowing POP access from all accounts, but you lose the ability to keep all your folders synced. There are all the usual limitations of POP mail with that. I wish Hotmail would go IMAP, but that doesn't seem likely anytime soon.

It was mentioned earlier in this thread, but I have found mBox Mail to be a great solution for this. I actually like their latest release of their app better than the built-in mail app. It allows landscape use, and has an in-line web browser (which is nice if you like to click over to forums like this one when you get an email that your thread has been updated. You don't have to go in and out of the main Safari app for that). I am succesfully using mBox Mail with both a premium Hotmail account and a regular Hotmail account. Your mileage may vary, but it has been worth the money for me to be able to use Hotmail in a way that keeps everything synced. The only thing it lacks is push email, but hopefully that will be possible when iPhone 3.0 comes out.
