All ipods have bad pixels. I have never seen a perfect one. The thing is that some bad pixels are so small that they don't bother at all, but some can be very annoying, very big. I have one quite big red pixel, but I'm not going to exchange my unit because of it.

Week 47, John Lennon box seems to be a perfect screen!

Whew, I was quite worried I'd be complaining at the genius bar about two things (Touch and my overly humming iMac)

All pixels are the same size. What in the world are you talking about?

Could you imagine a screen where the pixels weren't all the same size?

Of course, technically speaking all pixels are the same size. I have 2 or 3 hot pixels close to each other so that it looks like one big hot pixel to a human eye. And that is what I was talking about. A single hot pixel, or subpixel doesn't bother me at all.

I have a week 47 ipod touch.

I can see all the bars in the gamma test.

In the white saturation test I can see the white boxes in the first two rows, but can't see the boxes in the bottom row

There are no stuck pixels

About the flickering screen if I stare at it long enough I think it might be flickering but that might be the power of suggestion.

I haven't been following the screen quality threads, how is the performance on the white saturation test compared to past screens?

I am waiting for Touch screen quality to improve. I had problems with various weeks while involved in an exchange game with Apple a few weeks ago. I haven't heard too much lately, so I'm wondering how things are going. In particular, could people who have recent week numbers comment on the following?....

1) How do these screen tests look? (http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/small/) In particular, I'm interested in the first test (Quick gamma/contrast test), the contrast test, and the white saturation test.

2) How about stuck pixels? You can test for them at http://appleservedup.com/pixeltest.html

3) Flickering screen at lowest brightness setting (with auto-brightness turned off). I noticed while browsing in a dark room that when I set the brightness all the way down, the screen flickered. It was only noticeable in very dark rooms.

Thanks.

Week 46 here with John Lennon box, and it is absolutely perfect, no stuck pixels or flickering or anything. So happy :)

Ive got one from a JL box, dunno what week it is but the colors and everything look fantastic, no issues.

One question though, mine is engraved. Now say later in the year i was to develop a dead strip, a problem clearly not caused by the user. Will they still replace it or am I just out of luck? It was a present so you know, no way of researching these things prior to purchase, haha.

eh, I got one that had negative blacks. Going to the genius bar tomorrow.

bleh.

Well I cant see the bottom row either but what is odd is that on my PC monitor the boxes are all displayed and box 200, the first one, is a solid sort of gray, whereas on my touch it is like a checkerboard and so are all the rest that are visible. If I can I want to pop into the Apple store and see a Genius about this as I am not 100% sure this is ok. On the plus side though I have no stuck pixels on any of the tests.

Hello everyone.
Sorry for my English, I am french. I bought a Touch week 48 in Miami, and my screen seems strange. In the axis of the screen, the colors are rather correct, but as soon as I shifts, especially in the upper left, it no longer sees little or nothing about dark colors.
Here are some photos that make it not too bad what I see.

my first touch was a week 37 - negative black issue, so it went back. my next was a week 38 with a decent screen (not great). i had it for 3 months and the input jack went bad with no audio on the left side. got another one on warranty which seems to be a week 37 (?). it came in a white box and the "genius" just swapped the unit, letting me keep my original box. no black screen issues, but as i describe in another thread, my fonts look fuzzy and it seems to have a refresh rate type of problem. its almost as if when a static image is displayed, for a split second i can see the line gradients. its hard to explain, and i fear that the apple store will not agree with me that its a problem and i'm gonna be stuck with it. if this happens i will probably buy another one at costco and then return it next day with my "bad" one in the box.

i love the device, but this is getting really annoying.

I went through the same annoying thing. First of all, do *not* allow a "genius" to tell you that the screen is not a problem. If you are unhappy with it, and the "genius" is giving you a difficult time, ask to talk to the manager. Have them open a brand new non-refurb unit and give you that one. If they won't, demand a full refund. I eventually demand (and got) a full refund when I couldn't stand having to go to the Apple store all the time for exchanges. Also, at one point I did have to talk to the manager to get a brand new one instead of the refurbs from the exchange stock.

Anyway, I eventually went with Amazon.com ($269.99, no tax, free 1-day shipping), and I'm quite happy with it (week 47).

As for pulling the Costco trick - I wouldn't do it. The serial number is on the box and the Touch, so it's pretty easy to see what you're up to. Besides, you shouldn't have to. Just be confident, calm, and refuse to take "no" as an answer. You have just dropped some serious $$ on a product that is giving you headaches. They *owe* you. You are not trying to scam them.

Hello,

Thing is, I didn't buy it at the apple store. I bought it at Best Buy, and that was about 100 days ago.

Question - are you saying the one they gave me is a refurb and not new? I asked if it was new and they said it was - that they have "new" ones not in retail packages that are set aside specifically for warranty covered exchanges. It seemed new - I mean it had the plastic covering and the screen seemed totally virgin clean.

Regarding my screen, it has been frustrating. I'm really not sure there is a problem. Sometimes I think its all in my head, but other times I feel like something is just not right. Its very subtle. Tonight I plan to go to Best Buy to look at a display model so I can compare them side by side.

The costco trick would work I think. Do you really think they will compare serial numbers? They'll just open the box and make sure its in there.

Sorry. I'm not familiar with Best Buy's return/exchange policy.

Yes, I am saying that you received a refurb. I actually confirmed this with 4 different Apple employees. They have separate "exchange stock" which is generally refurb. They guarantee that the units are "like new". My concern was that "like new" is not new. Besides, what condition is the battery in?

Have you run the tests? (http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/small/)

You could have a device with a contrast problem, or a minor negative "shimmery" black problem, or something similar related to a restricted viewing angle. Either way, I would be persistent. Do not let them brush you off or get you second-guessing. Subtle it may be - acceptable it is not.

While I'm not sure about Costco, I do know that the Apple store confirms serial numbers. In my experience, I have also seen employees at Staples and CompUSA do the same with other electronic devices. You might luck out. I'd be concerned, however, that you'd get caught trying to pull something over, and then you'd be stuck with 2 of them (in the very least).

My screen (Mid November) is Perfect, AFAIK. Generalization SHOT DOWN. :D

So on the lagom.nl site the quick gamma/contrast ratio test. Does everyone on here see columns 1 & 2 completely, top to bottom?

Takes a couple of minutes to check so would be good if people could tell me. I am happy to go back to Apple store and get a swap but it is a lot of hassle if my screen is the same as all the others!

Just got mine this week and the screen is perfect. No problems at all. I'm happy.

My first 4 units did not show the first 2 columns. My current week 47 from amazon.com shows all columns, including 1 & 2 (top to bottom).

I don't know what to do with mine. On the lagom test, I can see every columns. Indeed, my problem is in terms of angles of vision. How are yours?
In your opinion, do I have to send it back to Apple for an exchange? I am in France, I can not go back to the shop where I bought it.
Thanks all.

I have to be honest - I didn't quite understand your previous post. If it is indeed a problem with viewing angles, I am not sure you're going to get one that you'll like better. It appears that even on my "good" screen (my 5th Touch), the viewing angles aren't great.

Bottom line - if you are not happy with it, exchange it.

As you can see on my first post (with photos) on the fourth picture, we can see virtually nothing, whereas it is actually the same image as the third.
I will try to compare with another Touch really, to see the difference.

Experience with a week 46 and a week 48

I've now had a week 46 and a week 48, both in JL boxes, and both with (in my opinion) very noticeable clumps of stuck pixels - the 46 had them in the middle of the screen, the 48 has them on the bottom. I took a quick look at a few store display models when I did my exchange, and I found that they too have stuck pixels (although they weren't quite as noticeable).

I too am beginning to wonder if there really are no 'perfect' screens - only those with un-grouped stuck pixels small enough to go more or less undetected, or which don't disturb those (like myself) who are bothered by such tiny details.

Also, does anyone know if stuck pixels can become miraculously unstuck just through regular usage?

My journey continues...still haven't found an iPod touch without stuck pixels. This one is a week 47 I believe, John Lennon box.

3 stuck pixels right in the middle of the screen.

I think this is my seventh or eighth one...luckily we opened a few of those in the store together so I didn't have to drive there 8 times...lol. They're ALL defective.

I've got a week 47, John Lennon box, works great! no stuck pixels, screen troubles of any sort, or audio problems.

Screen doesn't seem cheap or anything.

No complaints from me!
