if it's engraved you might as well learn to love that pixel![]()
Not true; I just today returned my defective week 38 iPod Touch with dead pixels, which was engraved, for a "brand new" one. See my newest topic post...

I've now had a week 46 and a week 48, both in JL boxes, and both with (in my opinion) very noticeable clumps of stuck pixels - the 46 had them in the middle of the screen, the 48 has them on the bottom. I took a quick look at a few store display models when I did my exchange, and I found that they too have stuck pixels (although they weren't quite as noticeable).
I too am beginning to wonder if there really are no 'perfect' screens - only those with un-grouped stuck pixels small enough to go more or less undetected, or which don't disturb those (like myself) who are bothered by such tiny details.
And what about viewing angles?
Viewing angles appear to be good. I went through the effort of tilting it every which way and all can be seen as expected. That is, except, when I tried to look at the screen from directly behind the Touch. From behind, the screen is completely blocked by casing and several layers of circuitry, memory, and other knickknacks I don't (care to) understand.
The colours? They're crisp. Like a Ritz cracker. There don't appear to be any inverted, shimmery or otherwise 'messed up' black tones. Nor is the screen overly illuminated, so as to drown out the richness of said colours. (The latter observation has been expressed as a concern in several other threads on this internet-based website.)
!!!NO!!!
Just buy an Ipod Touch, I also live in Europe (Portugal) and even though it's more expensive (400 euros-->600 dollars) I'm gonna buy one after January 15th (MacExpo).
And it's not true you can't replace it, even though you don't have apple stores... just go to where you bought it and put the warranty under their noses.

Just something I remembered: if you have stuck pixels on your iPT you can use this to fix them: http://www.ebaspace.com/iphone-app/#_home
It worked for me.
LOL, I bet none of this guys know what your nick mean, or you would have your inbox flooded ;]Hey, i live in portugal too.
eh, I got one that had negative blacks. Going to the genius bar tomorrow.
bleh.
I had a week 48 and it had 1 stuck pixel. I wasn't going to make a deal out of it because I loved the thing so freakin much. After my friend noticed it as well, she pretty much convinced me to exchange it.
I did, and got a week 47. Absolutely perfect, no dead/stuck pixels.
I LOVE this thing. I wish Apple would allow us to install our own apps without having to go through a convoluted (although simpler than it was in the past) process. I'm hoping the iPhone SDK will open things up a little.
PS: I tried the stuck pixel fix webpage. Didn't work, and I ran it for a while.
Strange. I had 3 numbered items to start this post, yet it appears people have only responded to 1 of them. #1 and #3 above.....
"cheap" and "great" aren't really addressing these concerns.
I'll understand if you are relatively happy and don't want to look closer.
So what is Apples policy on dead/stuck pixels? I have just noticed 1 on my touch which now I know it is there is bugging me. Coupled with the fact the back plate is not all that well fitted meaning the chrome sticks out and is noticeable when viewing the Touch straight on is pushing me to go for an exchange. I live in the UK if that has any bearing on things.
With that tone, you should be thankful for the advice you've received so far
My week 43 iPod has no problem. Screen tests turned out perfect.
1) How do these screen tests look? (http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/small/) In particular, I'm interested in the first test (Quick gamma/contrast test), the contrast test, and the white saturation test.
2) How about stuck pixels? You can test for them at http://appleservedup.com/pixeltest.html
3) Flickering screen at lowest brightness setting (with auto-brightness turned off). I noticed while browsing in a dark room that when I set the brightness all the way down, the screen flickered. It was only noticeable in very dark rooms.
