I've now had a week 46 and a week 48, both in JL boxes, and both with (in my opinion) very noticeable clumps of stuck pixels - the 46 had them in the middle of the screen, the 48 has them on the bottom. I took a quick look at a few store display models when I did my exchange, and I found that they too have stuck pixels (although they weren't quite as noticeable).

I too am beginning to wonder if there really are no 'perfect' screens - only those with un-grouped stuck pixels small enough to go more or less undetected, or which don't disturb those (like myself) who are bothered by such tiny details.

UPDATE: Just picked up a 2nd week 48. Upon relatively thorough review, the screen has no discernible flaws. Looks like 'perfect' screens (i.e. no stuck/dead pixels) just might exist after all.

hello guys,im new here and sorry for my bad english :D
i have decided 2 buy touch but im afraid of bad/dead pixels/bad angles and color reflection screen....so should i risk or buy classic(which isnt my true love like touch but it is reliable..).....before you answer be aware that i live in east europe and apple stores are not fond of replacing products because of stupid reasons like bad screens :( and the products are more expencive than in USA so i dont want to regret....(ipod touch 16gb costs 660 dollars)

And what about viewing angles?

Viewing angles appear to be good. I went through the effort of tilting it every which way and all can be seen as expected. That is, except, when I tried to look at the screen from directly behind the Touch. From behind, the screen is completely blocked by casing and several layers of circuitry, memory, and other knickknacks I don't (care to) understand.

The colours? They're crisp. Like a Ritz cracker. There don't appear to be any inverted, shimmery or otherwise 'messed up' black tones. Nor is the screen overly illuminated, so as to drown out the richness of said colours. (The latter observation has been expressed as a concern in several other threads on this internet-based website.)

that messed black colours are my biggest fear...because watching videos isnt gonna be that good...so,should i buy classic?

!!!NO!!!
Just buy an Ipod Touch, I also live in Europe (Portugal) and even though it's more expensive (400 euros-->600 dollars) I'm gonna buy one after January 15th (MacExpo).
And it's not true you can't replace it, even though you don't have apple stores... just go to where you bought it and put the warranty under their noses.

No problems

You know I dont know what week my touch is, but I have had no issues whatsoever with it. I purchased it from my local best buy about a week to 10 days before christmas. The screen is beautiful, the wifi is great, music playback is flawless.

Ugh...my 3rd Touch (week 47) is finally good. 1st lost audio and 2nd "washed out" screen. I don't think I can see the first two columns, but I'll take it. I never thought I would be thankful to have bought it from Target, but after hearing the hassle from the Apple Store, I'm glad. Easy exchange...no questions asked.

I just picked up a 16 gig today at
BB. It was a wk 45 and the screen
is fantastic.

eh, I got one that had negative blacks. Going to the genius bar tomorrow.

bleh.

oh, by the way, went to the genius bar and they promptly exchanged it for a new one (although the guy said he didn't really see what I was talking about, but all the same he was very nice and gave me a new one anyways).

the new one is perfect.

I mean, really great. no dead pixels, no dust under the screen, the colors are great.

glad to see there are some screens that have zero defects.

also the box it came in was the older one.

I had a week 48 and it had 1 stuck pixel. I wasn't going to make a deal out of it because I loved the thing so freakin much. After my friend noticed it as well, she pretty much convinced me to exchange it.

I did, and got a week 47. Absolutely perfect, no dead/stuck pixels.

I LOVE this thing. I wish Apple would allow us to install our own apps without having to go through a convoluted (although simpler than it was in the past) process. I'm hoping the iPhone SDK will open things up a little.

PS: I tried the stuck pixel fix webpage. Didn't work, and I ran it for a while.

So what is Apples policy on dead/stuck pixels? I have just noticed 1 on my touch which now I know it is there is bugging me. Coupled with the fact the back plate is not all that well fitted meaning the chrome sticks out and is noticeable when viewing the Touch straight on is pushing me to go for an exchange. I live in the UK if that has any bearing on things.

Just to update: Week 51 is perfect :D I sent my 45 back as I wasn't happy with the contrast, although it looks like it was fine and that all iPod Touches (all I have looked at) don't show certain pictures as perfect as they do on my PC.

Strange. I had 3 numbered items to start this post, yet it appears people have only responded to 1 of them. #1 and #3 above.....

"cheap" and "great" aren't really addressing these concerns.

I'll understand if you are relatively happy and don't want to look closer.

With that tone, you should be thankful for the advice you've received so far :p

My week 43 iPod has no problem. Screen tests turned out perfect.

same thing as me. I noticed couple of them.so I'm in dilemma, return it or not.I'm afraid to get even worse...

My week 43 iPod has no problem. Screen tests turned out perfect.

Let's say you asked the following quesition:

For anyone who bought product x, can you answer these questions:
1) does it do A?
2) does it do B?
3) does it do C?

Now imagine that many responses roll in, and they all say, "I like x so much", or "x seems to be fine", or "x seems to do everything I want it to".

Did anyone answer the questions? No.

Fortunately, I did resolve the problem as I now have a week 47. How did it stand up to my 3 questions? Not telling ;)

week 49, MA623C (canadian) unit here ('John Lennon' box)

1) How do these screen tests look? (http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/small/) In particular, I'm interested in the first test (Quick gamma/contrast test), the contrast test, and the white saturation test.

the nature of this test supposes a properly calibrated display. as most people have auto-brightness on, this test would mean little to them.
anyhow, my unit is on manual brightness 50% and all tests show just fine, except for the white saturation one -- only the first box shows. of course, i have not bothered to try calibrate the screen so i would not consider mine a sound result either.

2) How about stuck pixels? You can test for them at http://appleservedup.com/pixeltest.html

0 stuck/dead (sub)pixels.

3) Flickering screen at lowest brightness setting (with auto-brightness turned off). I noticed while browsing in a dark room that when I set the brightness all the way down, the screen flickered. It was only noticeable in very dark rooms.

i really don't see a point in this one as i'm yet to see an LCD that does not flicker at some combinations of grayscale and backlight power. heck, my desktop monitor (neither random, nor cheap) flickers at certain grays at backlight intensities ~30%. i'm pretty sure that if i really sought for it, i'd find a same-effect combination for my ipod touch.
