No one is saying the phone shouldn't have it. But what I'm saying is it should also have had touchID. They just couldn't do it. And they didn't want to do it on the back.

Next year the flagship will have it, and that's why I'm passing on the X. Just my opinions though. I'm bummed
If the next year flagship comes with Touch ID, Apple would put themselves into a cluster****.

I believe Touch ID and face Id could have complemented themselves but a decision was made...they won’t comeback and say they were wrong.

Apple lives on convencing people they are never wrong.

You just may be right. Though they may understand people with different needs may need the option. Eg. people with no arms, vs. people in burkas/hijabs.

I wish I could have the chance to ask Tim a question. Cause I would really love to know the truth as to why they ditched TouchID. And I think we all know it's cause they couldn't get the tech right.

I dunno, I think they would bring it back.. it's in the Mac, iPad, iPod etc. I can't see them ditching it across the board.

No reason not to have both unless they just physically don't know how.

I don't really see how FaceID makes Apple Pay much more cumbersome. You reach into your pocket. As your slipping your phone out, you double tap the side button, which prompts Apple Pay to come up. You look at your phone for a split second and then put it on the reader and pay. Is that really much more difficult than double-tapping TouchID?
Its 2 steps as opposed to 1. Because the double click to initiate Apple Pay and Touch ID are both done on the home button it can be done in one step in under a second. It may sound like a trivial difference and complaint but generally when I'm wanting to initiate Apple Pay I am busy, juggling multiple items/bags in my hands and I love how fast it is to do it. Why would I spend a grand on something that's going to make one of my favourite things about the iPhone slower and more cumbersome.

We'll see.

One thing is for certain, people are going to be launching whatever apps are in the dock like a MF'er trying to get used to not having a home button.

Guys, as much as I want it to return, I cant see touch ID returning again to the phone. They removed the entire concept of the home button from IOS 11 - do you think they will bring it back for touch ID? Have they EVER brought back a feature out of regret? It's not gonna happen. Face ID will be fine, let's have a little faith in Apple.
They brought back the Camera Roll. I do hope they bring it to the X successor, probably would only happen if there are serious complaints.

Give it time. It is first gen tech, it will improve over time. Remember how slow touch id was in its first iteration compared to today?

This all turns on how fast FaceID can authenticate, which we don't really know yet. If it's literally nothing more than looking at your phone for a split second, then you can hardly call that a "step".

Remember the new MBPs have Touch ID. So I recon they are aiming at both technologies for different use applications.

IMO, they may go for BOTH eventually in iPhone (given rumours over the last month suggesting under-screen availability to be possible when tech catches-up), but maybe with Macs (laptops and desktops) just using Face ID (per current MS devices, and more importantly, given one stares at screen using Macs). So likely it's dependant on the tech available, AND the likely device usage.

Man I just realized how epic faceID would have been on the a a mac. They should have released it first on Macbooks, perfected the tech then brought it out on Iphone. Are we going to have to wait years for this to get on Mac, just like we had to wait forever to get touchID on macbooks. I don't think I'll be upgrading till touchID is back. Samsung did it right this time. Face unlock/iris unlock is an option but you still have a fingerprint sensor and pin as back up.

This is the sole reason I won't be upgrading to the iPhone X. There are so many scenarios where I wouldn't be able to use FaceID where I currently use TouchID. Driving, while my phone is laying flat on my desk, when I'm laying in bed and want to check a message/alarm etc on my bedside table. I'd end up having to type my passcode in so many throughout the day whereas TouchID is perfect to me. The only time I have to enter my passcode is when I restart my phone.
When using Apple Pay I have my phone authenticated and ready to go before it's even fully out of my pocket using TouchID. I believe FaceID requires you to get your phone out, look at it to authenticate and then and then interact again in order to load up your wallet, it'll be such a longer process.
It feels like such a massive step backwards and a real disappointment as I love everything else about the X but this is a deal breaker to me.

Let me preface this by saying that am not thrilled by thought of losing TouchID. Even though I understand why it's happening, I see it as a step back in many ways as well. That being said...

You should never use the argument that a feature makes it harder to use you phone while driving! I mean, come on! D you think you're going to get sympathy there?

Laying on you desk, it's not clear how wide the field of vision and functional angles of FaceID will be. It may be that if you can see the phone well enough to use it, it can see you well enough to unlock.

How does this hinder using your phone laying in bed? You know it works in the dark, right?

I agree with you on the wallet/Apple Pay being more cumbersome though.

They don't release their new tech on Macs or anything else before they do so on their most important multi-million selling device; iPhone.

Business sense in their market-leading sales position.

Of course, these innovations then drip through to lesser selling devices.

Oh I know, it's just frustrating being a mac user and developer. They talk on and on about how much they need and respect developers and content creators but never provide the bleeding edge for those consumers. I wish they followed the car industry model where the best tech is tested in their high end cars and makes it down to the lower end when it is perfected. Taking a feature from a full computer and putting in a phone is still an amazing accomplishment that they could highlight.

Yeah see what you're saying. I suppose they're just doing it miniature, by releasing it on premium iPhone before then doing so on standard iPhone, along with other devices, next year.

FACE ID is stupid. I prefer touch Idea over it. faster , easier , and handy. and people will look stupid unlocking their phones using FACE ID

Do you look stupid looking at your phone? It’s the same movement/posture. I don’t understand this perception that people will need to pose in front of their phone like having their picture taken. It’ll most likely be near-instantaneous.

Right, just the same as people felt stupid using Touch ID until it was nearly everywhere, and then no one batted an eyelid.

Let me guess. We all get used to it and stop complaining.

Just like the 4" form factor. Just like the 5.5" form factor. Just like Touch ID. Just like the power button moving to the right side. Just like the headphone jack moving to the bottom of the phone, and then subsequently disappearing. Just like having to use a dongle to listen to music.

One could argue that that's a sheep mentality, rather than simply "getting used to it" or it being better. Just accepting whatever is thrown at you so you can say, "See, it works". In the case of bigger screens etc, I agree with you.

One day what Apple throw at us WON'T work, it won't be better than what came before or what's already in place.

As I said in another post, Apple Pay now has an extra step on the X due to the double press sleep/wake, Face ID, then hold to store sensor. The current method of phone to sensor with finger on Touch ID is borderline instantaneous on the iPhone 7.

Security wise (1/50,000 vs 1/1,000,000) yes Face ID is more secure. In terms of practicality during every day use, it seems slower than what it's replacing.

You could always get an Apple Watch 🙂. I much prefer paying with my watch to my iPhone, even with the current setup.
