Maybe apple does think that face ID is inferior to Touch ID? The fact is, touch couldn't work with the X, so Apple was forced to go with something else.
Even if they think it's crap, they are still going to present it to the world as the best thing ever.

I'll wait to use it myself or see more hands on videos, but I don't see it as more cumbersome. If I plan on using the phone, I will pick it up and bring it to my face to see it. Done, no need to place a finger anywhere. If I just need to look at notifications, I tap to wake. Easy also. Let's just wait until we have it before we go crazy on the internet. People had major issues with Touch ID also before it came out, now there is no way we can live without it. Deep breaths all.

I think FaceID is a step forward in the evolution of unlocking a phone (nothing else considered). The problem is, as humans - you need or want a delay in certain circumstances. It's no different than Siri. Siri is great and is getting better but there's just too many times where I can't speak to my phone. I need quiet and discretion. We'll see how FaceID handles those scenarios.

Well for arguments sake can I change "driving" to "whilst in a car cradle/dock". People spend time sat in their cars (with the ignition off) with their phone sat in the cradle, waiting to pick kids up from school, waiting to meet people etc. FaceID clearly won't work in this scenario where TouchID does. That is what I am trying to spark a discussion about, not whether you think I am using my phone illegally whilst driving.

You can't pick up and use your phone while waiting in the car? You can do it now, you can do it with Face ID. I am lost with you saying Face ID won't work in that scenario.

How do you authenticate with the  Watch?

You authenticate to the watch when you put it on by either entering the passcode or authenticating to your iPhone via touchID or passcode. After you do this, you don't have to authenticate to ApplePay when using it from the watch - you just activate it with a double click of the button. Once the watch is taken off it locks again.

I'm looking forward to the reports in larger cities of people with a phone to their face running into traffic, people/pedestrians or looters/burglars being able to easily recognize who is using a $1,000+ phone.

They have no choice. They were forced to react to competition without taking the necessary time to develop a real solution

I leave it in the cradle usually, I'm talking about quick tasks like changing playlists or launching a call. Others have pointed out that the range of FaceID should allow this scenario to work which is good news. I thought you had to be looking almost directly at it.

Yea I would think that would work quite well in that scenario. Just need to swipe up to get to the home screen. I get that people fear change, but I think we'll adapt fairly quickly and Face ID will be a nice solution. I am at least optimistic.

Hopefully you're right. I'm usually very open and adaptable to change. I jumped in head first with first Plus iPhone, the removed headphone jack etc. I'm just a bit too cynical of FaceID and reluctant to give up TouchID at this stage to jump straight in and get one at launch. I think for me it'll be a case of seeing what the reception is like and then deciding in early 2018 if I want to get one or wait for a future iteration where the technology might be improved. It'll certainly feel strange for me as it'll be my first time since the 3GS that I haven't got the new iPhone at launch.
Although part of me is kinda relieved I don't have to go through the hassle of trying to secure a launch day phone and get in on the pre orders!

could you not use Siri to change tracks, etc?

Replay your "running into traffic" scenario but for TouchID. Once you authenticate with TouchID you would be looking at the phone running into traffic. The authentication method doesn't have any impact on idiots using their phones crossing the street.

I've never really gotten on board the Siri train. I use it for the odd thing. It doesn't seem to work well in my car, it gets it wrong more often than not.
I think the real question is why would I pay a grand to have to change the way I do daily tasks on my phone from the way I find easiest.

I don’t think they didn’t, it was clearly meant to be an additional feature in addition to TouchID. The problem is they couldn’t get TouchID to work under the glass.

Don't be surprised to see touchID make a comeback once they figure out how to make it work under the lcd screen.

LCD wasn't the issue with the fingerprint sensor. Apple is moving away from LCD technology ultimately and next year it's been rumored OLED will be expanding to other iPhone models. Also they had issues implementing a fingerprint sensor under the OLED display. So I disagree that touch ID will make a return. That's why Apple has invested into Face ID and they made that clear when Tim Cook was on stage for 15 minutes talking about the future of Face ID.

I saw an article in a magazine that said masks could be made and unlock the Iphone X
Also wondered if identical twins can open another's iPhone
Personally I think the face recognition will work fine.
According to iPhone repairers a lot of iPhones are handed in for repair on the home button (perhaps overused?)

Bill: "Hey Dave look at this, quick!" *holds up Dave's iPhone X*
Dave: "Huh, what?" *looks at iPhone X, which unlocks*
Bill: *swipes up on home screen* "hehe, sucker"

Vs

Bill: "Hey Dave, stick your finger on here"
Dave: "Meh, no chance"

FaceID may be statistically more secure, but it's not practically more secure.

Apple, these days, cares more about features than usability. That's the difference from now and when Jobs was running it. His focus was making devices USABLE, not making features usable. Apple wants a full screen front, so they removed the button to do it. In reality they made the iPhone harder to use.

Remember this?

This is Steve Jobs era. And your comment perfectly describes this product.
To be fair, the only gripe I have with the iPhone X is the notch. Can't stand it. FaceID will be an improvement over TouchID, even more so in future generations.

I read an article saying that it would be possible to create masks and able to unlock the iPhone X

Some of the repairers of iPhones told me they get lots with faulty home buttons, probably caused be overuse

I am for Face ID and am sure U will get used to it as I did when we switched to TouchID
I wonder however when happened when I reboot...I have to key in my code...so I suppose there will be a code with FaceID

I've got an S8 with retina unlock and also a Surface Pro with Windows Hello (basically the same as the X - 3D facial unlock). Both work brilliantly and definitely have their uses (dirty hands, etc). I do still use the fingerprint sensor on my S8 occasionally but 90% of the time, I use retina unlock.

I expect Face ID to work the same as, or better than, Windows Hello, which is incredibly fast, accurate and works from loads of angles (the retina unlock is more picky and requires you to line up your eyes in a couple of circles) - I think people will be pleasantly surprised by Face ID once they get to use it

Only evil twins 🙂

I read an article saying that it would be possible to create masks and able to unlock the iPhone X

Or the article used it wrong, or you read it wrong,
masks were used to test the system, but with the added infrared sensor you have to be a live person to unlock, no picture or mask can fool the sensors.

Next year we’ll have a combination of Touch ID and face ID and everybody will be happy (expect for iPhone x owners)

Next year we'll see even less Idevices with touch ID, FaceID needs less space inside, and can be integrated in all systems.
I hope to see FaceID in the next Imac

I don’t think so...
“Federighi went on to say that as much as Apple loves Touch ID, Face ID is "that much better." He confirmed that Apple believes Face ID is the future of biometric authentication, with the caveat that there are settings where different biometric techniques or combinations of biometrics could make sense. “
