You have to realize that they are confused by all the websites calling it "the new ipad" left and right.
Once all this calms down it will just be the ipad. So it'll be ipad 1, ipad 2, ipad.

I think in the future Apple will call the iPad's first generation, second generation and third generation. While dropping the iPad 1 and iPad 2.

And I'll wager the new iPhone that comes out will be called iPhone.

I went to the Speck website to see if they had any cases up yet, and was disappointed to see they're also calling it "New iPad."

Notice that "new" is lower case and only "iPad" is bold.

It's just like when they introduce "The new, faster, Macbook Pro"

The iPad generations so far are as such:

2010: iPad (first generation)
2011: iPad 2
2012: iPad (third generation)

Edit: This is the current headline image on the Macbook Pro page:

I don't think the official product name changed to "The New Macbook Pro"

I have the same reaction as the OP. How can people be so stupid. They've said "the new" before just like Stetrain said. It's like every year, people forget who's reliable and who's not and just totally ignore Apple's history and previous patterns.

I was so happy to get journalists to shut up about "iPad HD" and now they're doing something just as stupid with thinking that the iPad's name is "new iPad"

In 2002 the flat panel iMac was introduced as the New iMac. It's not really its name.

Some people get all wrapped up in names and numbering sequences. It's pretty silly. That's what happened with the iPhone 4s. If the exact same phone was named iPhone 5, the negative feedback would have been minimal.

Now let's also complain about the A5X chip. Why isn't it the A6??? ;)

I can't believe that some people are so stupid as to actually insinuate possible stupidity on the part of others. You Sir, are in a class above all others. You Sir, are not possible.

Considering the confusion associated with versions for many Apple products, I don't think it's unreasonable for people to think it is actually called "The new iPad". I also noticed that Apple refers to it as "iPad (3rd generation)" in the Apple Store.

Before my recent Macbook Air 13 (aka Macbook Air core i5, aka MacbookAir4, aka MC965LL/A) purchase, I had not bought an Apple computer since an Apple II (aka Apple ][) and Apple IIe back in the early 80s. When researching my Macbook Air purchase, I had to spend a bit of time reading up on different versions to figure out what was what.

Most vendors use confusing versioning (ex. Windows 1.x, 2.x, 3.x, 95, 98, ME, XP, NT 3.x, NT 4.0, 2000, Vista, 7, 8, CE, Mobile, Server 2003, Server 2008, Home Server, etc etc), but Apple is probably the worst about it.

The OP is right! This doesnt just seem like a pointless ranting thread....it actually is.

If this is one of your big problems of the day....you have no problems.

Obviously it isn't the products name because then what would they call the next iPad "the new newer ipad"?

I think its funny actually and really isn't that irritating. . .

I remember people calling the 4th gen the nano chromatic which was used in a similar fashion during its presentation.

Its going be referenced as iPad (3rd generation) or iPad 3 when its no longer considered "new".

I think they looked at it and decided in 10 years they don't want to have an "iPad 13" or whatever number they build up to between now and then. You don't have an IMac 3 or Mac book pro 4. It's not really necessary to add a number to a product to make it special or different. As the technology changes the product may change enough to warrant a new name but it seems silly to add a number on the end of the name just to differentiate it.

The phrase "new" has been used ad infinitum on products that provided far fewer new features than the iPad3. I can't see getting upset over the use of a tried and true marketing pitch. Just judge the product on the price and features and roll you eyes over the hype.

I did like the features, but would have appreciated a lower price.

Why don't we call it the 2012 iPad? So that would make mine a 2011 iPad. That'll work and keep most people in line about what they have. We call a car by the year as well without adding a consecutive number at the end.

Apple products haven't lost their identity. It's just iPad.

Even with the iPad 2, it was always iPad.

When you go into the store, you don't even have to say "I want the iPad."

All you have to say is, "I want iPad."

Err.. it was always "I want the iPad" because there was only one iPad on sale.

-walk into Apple store-
"I want iPad"
"Good job on completing a sentence, now which one would you like?"
"Uhhh.. the iPad?"

I see a problem here. Not saying that it's wrong of them to lose the number (fantastic move actually), just something wrong with you're argument. People will walk in and say "I want the new iPad" or "I want the iPad 2".

This may seem like a pointless ranting thread, but it genuinely irritates me how people can be stupid enough to think that the product is actually called "New iPad". How can they not understand it's just called iPad and that the "new" is to refer to the fact that it's newer than it's predecessor?

I just can't believe some people are stupid enough to think it's as if we have the "iPad" -> "iPad 2" -> "New iPad"... You can't possibly be that stupid to believe such a thing... And then actually go on about how stupid you think the name is, when it's not even it's name in the first place! So irritating :/

Regardless, I think this is a very nice update. Another stupidity is people thinking "hur dur no redesign, this is not a worthy update!". I think they can't get around to understanding how big it is that this has a retina screen now. It may not be thinner, or have a glass back, but that doesn't mean it's not a good update.

Why do you care?... You need to find real things to think about

For me this is the same as people who absolutely insist on referring to the next iPhone as the iPhone 6, "because it's going to be the 6th one"... Yes. It is going to be the 6th one. No. We shouldn't bloody call it the iPhone 6.

I like just calling it the iPad. I work at an apple reseller and I've never ever once had a customer walk in and ask for an iPad 2, except when it was first released, and even then everyone just asked for 'a new iPad' anyway.

Fact is, it's going to have to be unofficially referred to as the third generation iPad. No big deal though in the grand scheme of things though is it....

No doubt it is a great update. Glad it has been announced and will prove some rumors were true or good guess and the other rumors will die a horrible death.

These crazy thread are the norm for a new Apple release. Now it is time to relax and wait for next Friday!

Band Aids have been around for 90 years and have had numerous changes and improvements.

They're still just called "Band Aids".

This thread is inappropriate. Stupid people have feelings too.

I'm looking forward to walking into my local :apple: store and saying "I want iPad" just for the reaction. It's in high-falooting area so I can see having fun with it. :/

Order confirms iPad name:

iPad with Wi-Fi + 4G 64GB - Black (3rd generation)

Agree this is much better :apple:

Empathize with the OP. Referring to it informally as "the new" iPad is just their way of transitioning to an unnumbered naming convention. Expect to see this happen with the iPhone in the fall. Numbering will be limited to "X generation" in the technical description, as quoted above, and as is the case for all of their other products. This was inevitable, and I'm happy Apple is finally pulling the trigger.

Why are you thinking so literal?

Obviously when you walk in you would say "I would like the new iPad." and the guy would know exactly what you mean.

Just like you would say "I would like the new iMac."

That doesnt mean the product is called "New iPad" or "New iMac".

What is there not to understand? there will be no problems at all.

I think my local news station also called it the new ipad when reporting about its release.

That said, I don't see why it should bother you. People should be able to call it ipad3 and not have to face derision and scorn over this...
