Maybe it's named iPad to mark a new beginning,

Like post pc era, perhaps naming it iPad marks the first product in the post jobs era

Well, I guess that's a subjective thing then.
Maybe you see the word "stupid" in a much harsher way than I do.

So you must be ok with people calling you "stupid" then. I think it's safe to say that most people find being called "stupid" offensive and you'd be incredibly insensitive to call people that, even if you're fine with the label.

I just refer to it as an iPad 3rd generation or an iPad 3, when talking to friends about it, official naming conventions be damned. Not really important to me what they call it. First world problems there...

I'm amazed that someone can get annoyed enough with what random strangers post on a forum to actually start a thread about it.

You're reading too much in to it.

I can't honestly say I'd dwell on the subject if someone I don't know calls me stupid. If it's someone I know well and care about, then that's a different subject.

I'm just being blunt about it, and if anyone wants to stand up for themselves and defend their point of view, then that's fantastic.

I don't know why people are so upset over the "dumb name" when Apple has been calling the MBP the new MBP for years. Same with the iMac, iPod touch, iPod nano, iPod shuffle, MBA, etc., etc.

I'm glad that they're not numbering every device anymore.

Thank you times 100.

To continue, I still think people think that a retina display is laughable; hell, I even thought it was a bit of a gimmick when the iPhone 4 was announced. Boy was I wrong when I got my 4! The retina display is a crazy big deal.

Im all for dropping the numbers and simplifying the name to fall in line with the rest of Apple's product lineup, but just to play devils advocate then what about this argument:

The iPhone and iPad are the only two Apple products in which they sell both the OLD and the NEW versions

Products like the MacBook Air or the Honda Civic make sense to keep simplified since they only sell one version at a time and retire the previous. But on an iPhone or iPad, which are aimed squarely at the consumer, then it's not "common sense" to know which is which unless there's a naming differentiator.

So while its easy to know that 4 and 4S or iPad and iPad 2 are different models, what happens in two years when the numbers are eliminated? Again, Im just playing devils advocate and I believe by then they won't be selling the "last year" model anymore but my point is that it's not as obvious as it seems so the attitude towards people who would prefer a more distinguishing name seems unnecessary. Especially since we were in that boat only a week ago.

I tend to think of these devices in the same way they sell cars. They don't ever call it the Prius1, Prius2, Prius3, Prius4...etc. for each successive year's release model. Sure they refer to them as "third generation", etc...and there are certainly different models/packages for them- as there are also with the iPad.

And, just like with cars, you can pay the big bucks and opt for the latest model on the showroom floor, or save a bit of money and get the, probably just as useful but missing some bells and whistles, last year's model that's still in the parking lot.

I thought it was called the Resolutionary iPad.

Magical iPad
iPad 2
Resolutionary iPad

:D

The iPad 2 was the only model sold for a good portion of its lifespan. This is unlike the iPhone becuase the iPhone has multiple versions being manufactured simultaneously.

I imagine that stock of the iPad 2 will eventually dry up and, just like the first iPad, be taken off the product line.

I wonder if they might replace the price point with another product, like the cheaper, smaller iPad we've caught wind about. But that might be a stretch.

Perhaps everyone just needs to calm down a teensy bit and relax. It's just a name....

It might well end up being unofficially called the iPad 3 anyway, as it's the only way you're going to be able to differentiate for accessories, unless they go by release year.

I don't think I'm reading too much into it. Your actions are offensive by calling people "stupid" and then additionally insensitive by justifying your name-calling with the "no big deal" argument. Very simple.

"Just being blunt" often displays a lack of common decency—even if you feel people unknown to you do not deserve that decency. There are less condescending ways to air trivial frustrations.

Yeah this has annoyed me too. It's just iPad, not 'new iPad', yet people are continually referring to new as a noun/part of the name instead of an adjective.

Especially annoying is when people say it's confusing and weird that Apple didn't give it a number, as if it's now so difficult to refer to it. We've never had this problem with Macs over the last 12 years, or iPods. Yet now it's confusing people because there's no incremental number attached?

It will simply be referred to as iPad (3rd generation) or iPad (early 2012) when you need to reference the exact model - just like we've been comfortably doing with pretty much any other Apple product in the past.

Edit - I just saw a Wired video and the reporters referred to the iPad not having a number as 'crazy' and 'confusing'. What's wrong with people.

Hrm, looking at my "iPad 2" on the back...don't see a "2" anywhere in its name, nor did I see any on the box...thought it was *ALWAYS* referred to as an iPad...
