everywhere i've read about it, have all said the think the name "The new iPad" is stupid. freakin' idiots!

but it is a bit weird, because while the iPad 2 was called iPad 2, the website still sometimes just referred to it as iPad, as did the back of the device itself and the box.

Apple really need some consistency, it would appear all they seem to be doing is confusing people.

That's because you let the media boost you up. You'll get used to it after a couple of days.

Somehow, I feel like- even though this is technically the "iPad 3", it's not The iPad 3! that the media was preparing us for. The enormous amount of hype was not warranted.

It's relatively easy for me to feel good about this step that Apple has taken, because I didn't let myself get carried away.

The choice of name personally bothers me anyway.

They call it "iPad" as if it was what they should have released at the beginning.

Why are you thinking so literal?

Obviously when you walk in you would say "I would like the new iPad." and the guy would know exactly what you mean.

Just like you would say "I would like the new iMac."

That doesnt mean the product is called "New iPad" or "New iMac".

What is there not to understand? there will be no problems at all.

Before there was only one iPad on sale at a time, so it was acceptable to say I want the iPad. Now there is two on sale at the same time, and as Apple is dropping the identifier between devices, and new adjective is needed to determine which iPad someone is talking about.

Also, who would say "I want iPad"? "Me neanderthal man" "Me make fire!"

I am in no way shape or form even suggesting the actual name is "the new iPad."

Indeed, people just keep saying that, it's really irritating.

Stop being jealous of my The New iPad.

Listen, there's nothing inconsistent here. I love my The New iPad and everyone else will too. Has Apple ever made a decision without being well informed in the Post-PC era? When people see my The New iPad they'll be like "Ooh, is that your The New iPad?" and I'll be like yeah baby, that's my The New iPad.

I see what you did there. And I like it almost as much as your signature, which is freaking hilarious. Hilarious, at least, for those of us who can recognize satire instead of blindly flying into Nerd Rage.

I think they shoulda went with a year model. Then again go to hps site and you don't know what year their laptops came out.

This may seem like a pointless ranting thread, but it genuinely irritates me how people can be stupid enough to think that the product is actually called "New iPad". How can they not understand it's just called iPad and that the "new" is to refer to the fact that it's newer than it's predecessor?

I just can't believe some people are stupid enough to think it's as if we have the "iPad" -> "iPad 2" -> "New iPad"... You can't possibly be that stupid to believe such a thing... And then actually go on about how stupid you think the name is, when it's not even it's name in the first place! So irritating :/

Regardless, I think this is a very nice update. Another stupidity is people thinking "hur dur no redesign, this is not a worthy update!". I think they can't get around to understanding how big it is that this has a retina screen now. It may not be thinner, or have a glass back, but that doesn't mean it's not a good update.

To be fair the fault lies with Apple.

How do you release a new product without a new name?

It would be one thing if like with the iMac, etc.. The new replaced the old.

Having two products that look the same, available for purchase at the same time. It makes no sense for them to have the same name.

I agree with you it's not named the new iPad officially. People take things at a glance though and that's how it's listed.

Imagine if the iPhone 4S was called the New iPhone.

I'm glad I can call it an "iPad". I already feel like a smug **** saying iPhone 4S. I don't want to say "iPad 3".

Yes i hate myself. :(

I think they shoulda went with a year model.
They did.

The current Apple lineup looks something like this:

MacBook Pro (2011)
MacBook Air (2011)
iMac (2011)
iPhone 4S
Mac Mini (2011)
iPod Touch (2011)
iPad (2012)

They don't advertise the stuff in the parentheses but we all know its there and thats how its talked about in natural conversation. So the only big item left that needs to be renamed in order to fall in line is the iPhone. And we may see "The new iPhone" come out this year sans numbers which means all this "what will it be called" stuff may finally die.

The big deal with "The new" going on is because this is a transition period for Apple naming but give it a few generations and it won't be confusing at all. (Unless you're in the used market. But thats not Apple's problem.)

I'm referring to it as the iPad3, because it immediately lets people know which model you're talking about. Everybody else call it "new iPad" and please make sure you don't capitalize the N in "new".

Or you want to be more of a fanboy and not offend Apple, you will probably call it the iPad 2012, but do us a solid and keep it simple.

Why do you care?... You need to find real things to think about

Oh yeah, silly me! I totally forgot that by talking about this, it is impossible for me to care about anything else in the world!
How could I be so naive?!

----------

How can one get so frustrated over someone else's stupidity, especially when it can't really hurt them?

Yep. Nailed it.

It's just frustrating because of people actually getting angry over the name, when it's not even the actual name.

And yes, I do realise it's not the best thread, I genuinely just needed to vent about it and see how others felt about the subject, which is why I said it may just seem like a pointless rant.

I can see how you're trying to mock me for this, but it doesn't really work, considering I realise and admit to the faults of the thread in the first place. Nice try though.

Also, who would say "I want iPad"? "Me neanderthal man" "Me make fire!"

I am in no way shape or form even suggesting the actual name is "the new iPad."

That's the way Apple refers to it. "On iPad, you can do this." or "Instead of watching your HDTV, watch iPad."

Would a customer walk into a store and go, "I wanted the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but instead I got iPad." ?

I think my local news station also called it the new ipad when reporting about its release.

That said, I don't see why it should bother you. People should be able to call it ipad3 and not have to face derision and scorn over this...

There's no problem with referring to it as the new iPad, because when you say that, you're using "new" as an adjective and saying that it's the latest iPad model. So of course, people saying "The new iPad is out!" or anything along those lines is okay.

What bothers me is the fact that people think it's actually called "New iPad", and then get angry over it (even though it was never it's name to begin with), and go off about it everywhere.

I just want to point out that having consumers simplifying things on their own doesn't always make things better.

"iTouch"

The iPod Touch has been around for 5 years but it's name still doesn't flow or sound right which is why we hear that awful term "iTouch" so often in the consumer space. I get your point and don't disagree with you entirely but I also don't think it's fanboy behavior to simply call a product what it's manufacturer wants you to call it.

LOL!

I guess I am one of those stupid people you were ranting about! Been sick with a bad cold, on cold meds for 3-4 days now and when I saw it listed as "The New iPad" I was like ... wtf?? Really?? they couldn't come up with something better?

In my haze to better hear what the product had to offer, I didn't really notice the faded lettering that said in a whisper the new IPAD. I blame the drugs, but really I think they could have done a bit better in indicating the non-name by just listing it as iPad. Sure they could have verbally said "the new" and just left iPad as it was lol!

I blame the cold meds, however, when you consider we live in an age where people use drugs, dump babies in dumpsters, women who don't even KNOW they are pregnant etc etc etc, are you really surprised at how stupid people are?

Though one admits faults, he can still be mocked.

Not that I was trying to mock you or anything. But I think you might have given me another reason to try if I were so inclined. ;)

It's just a name for an electronic gadget that people get wrong. I do think it's a bit odd that you're so worked up about it.

The "new" iPad is an uninspired name. That's it. I don't think people are stupid. They just don't get how you can go from one, to two, to "new." If anyone is stupid, it's Apple!

It's just like the Kindle thing, where Amazon refused (is still refusing?) to recognize different generations and it was confusing to purchase or talk with customer representatives about it.

But, if they want to call the Macbook Air the Macbook Air, the Macbook Pro the Macbook Pro, and so on, even though there are huge differences between one released last summer and one released last fall, that's fine.

Confuse the consumer. In the end I benefit, I guess, because some people will not pay attention to the specs (I'll tell them, of course) when I sell it, and they'll pay more than they should.

Think its kinda strange that Ipad 2 is being replaced by the newer and better Ipad? now think about it..... I already have Ipad... it was replaced by Ipad 2... no its not a riddle...
