I'm looking forward to walking into my local :apple: store and saying "I want iPad" just for the reaction. It's in high-falooting area so I can see having fun with it. :/

Make sure you grunt and scratch inappropriately when you ask.

Regaurdless of if it's New iPad or just iPad, it's still stupid to not differentiate your new product. My beef stems from going to walmart to buy an iPad 2 and no one at the store could tell me if the one they had was an iPad 1 or iPad 2 because the words "iPad 2" were not on the box and they only had one so there was nothing to compare it with. I can see the same thing happening again when I try to get an iPad 3. Sure, if your at the apple store, their people should know the difference but for other places, it will be an issue.

Branding experts said the lack of a new name is potentially confusing, given the fact that the company has given new names or tweaks to its line extensions before.
"It does seem to be a bit confusing, when you have a product evolution naming is a way to differentiate," said Charles Rashall, president & founder of Brandadvisors, a branding firm in San Francisco. The new name is "communicating that they are going backwards."

Upset that the new iPad isn’t called something different? Get over it.

To hear critics rail and complain, Apple fell on it face yesterday when it failed to differentiate the new iPad with the “3″ or “HD” moniker that it had been rumored to hold in the days before its official unveiling.

************. Cut it out with the magical thinking, folks.

I’m typing this from a MacBook – not the first generation of the device to hold that name, and it didn’t suffer poor sales as a result. Later on I’m going to drive my Jeep Grand Cherokee – not the first vehicle to be named that, either – to the grocery store to pick up the makings of dinner. I can come up with countless examples of products that change – dramatically, in some cases – from year to year but don’t change their names.

Apple is neither the first company to do this, nor is their decision to simplify the iPad’s name particularly ground-breaking. Get over it.

I’d also like to point out that when the first iPad was introduced, its name was the subject of huge controversy in the blogosphere and among the tech punditry, many of whom considered the name silly; it was likened it to a feminine hygiene product.

Two years and tens of millions of units sold later, the iPad defines the tablet market much in the same way that the iPod defined the MP3 market through much of the first decade of the millennium.

This may seem like a pointless ranting thread, but it genuinely irritates me how people can be stupid enough to think that the product is actually called "New iPad". How can they not understand it's just called iPad and that the "new" is to refer to the fact that it's newer than it's predecessor?

I just can't believe some people are stupid enough to think it's as if we have the "iPad" -> "iPad 2" -> "New iPad"... You can't possibly be that stupid to believe such a thing... And then actually go on about how stupid you think the name is, when it's not even it's name in the first place! So irritating :/

Regardless, I think this is a very nice update. Another stupidity is people thinking "hur dur no redesign, this is not a worthy update!". I think they can't get around to understanding how big it is that this has a retina screen now. It may not be thinner, or have a glass back, but that doesn't mean it's not a good update.

How can people be so stupid to point out such a stupid observation?

Should have been able to look at the specs on the box and immediately tell which you are holding.

The "new" iPad is an uninspired name. That's it. I don't think people are stupid. They just don't get how you can go from one, to two, to "new." If anyone is stupid, it's Apple!

They didn't go from one to two to new. They went from to 2 to .

Stop being jealous of my The New iPad.

Listen, there's nothing inconsistent here. I love my The New iPad and everyone else will too. Has Apple ever made a decision without being well informed in the Post-PC era? When people see my The New iPad they'll be like "Ooh, is that your The New iPad?" and I'll be like yeah baby, that's my The New iPad.

BJ

Day's best post. Fine family entertainment. 2 thumbs up.

Car companies do it all the time despite cars having very specific model #'s and manufacture years.

"The all new <insert car name here>" sound familiar?

Yes, but the difference as in the example I gave with iMacs are. The new car is replacing the old. Not being marketed alongside each other.

Year is usually included as well. "The all new 2013 Lexus GS"

Local dealer will sell all inventory. Typically only current year model has a prominent place on manufacturers site.

There's a Volkswagen Beetle from back in 40s-60s. It was revamped years ago in the 90s. Know what it's called? the "New Beetle", that's the official name. I don't care if 55 people upvoted you, it's kind of a stupid thread to start.

This whole thread is very silly.

100% of consumers buying this product in the next six months will walk into an Apple Store and say, verbatim: "I want to buy the new iPad."

Then, after six months, the iPad 2 will be discontinued and they'll be left with just "the iPad".

Analogies are always bad because there's always an exception...but.

Yeah some manufacturers do give the year, but a lot don't.

They might say "The all new Lexus GS" even if they specified 2013 what about:

GS-350
GS-350 F Sport
GS-450 H

That's my point. For marketing purposes it has to be simplified, its up to the buyer to know what they want and specify when they are actually buying the thing.

I can't imagine how someone could get so upset about something so trivial. Seriously, dude, you need to get a life.

No, this puts the iPad in to the same position as the whole line up of computers they have, and even iPod's in this case.

The only products they have ever numbered have been the iPhone and the iPad in it's first two years!

I'm sure retail stores will know what the **** they're selling. They will know what generation iPad they're selling to a customer, and quite frankly, if they don't know, then they're **** at their job.

But taking away the number scheme from the iPad is no different from what we have in virtually every other Apple product :/ So now, it won't be as catastrophic as you think it may be. It won't lead to mass confusion and people buying the iPad 2 when they think they're buying the newest iPad or **** like that.
People will just go in, say they want to buy an iPad, and then will be presented with the models the store is offering, that is all.

You should probably expect the same thing to happen with the iPhone now. I personally wouldn't be surprised if they take the same road with it's naming choice.

Sorry, but down the road, iPad 30 just doesn't sound neat.

I can't imagine how someone could get so upset about something so trivial. Seriously, dude, you need to get a life.

Lol. I love how people just assume that because I'm expressing how I find this annoying, that I must not have a life, or have nothing else to do in my life.

I do have a lot of other things to worry about and do, trust me, I'm not here 24/7. But I am an avid Apple follower, and I am interested in looking at the forums and reading about stuff related to the products, events, etc. So yes, the fact that, not only in this forum, but on Twitter, Tumblr, and other sites, people are getting so wound up and angry over a name that doesn't even exist, it just gets to me a bit. And I think I'm not the only person that feels the same, judging by the people thumbing me up and other responses.

I just think it's pathetic that people are complaining when they're so ill-informed.

But honestly, taking a few minutes to write about how I feel towards the subject =/= I'm thinking about it all day and it's the only thing that bothers me in life.

Though one admits faults, he can still be mocked.

Not that I was trying to mock you or anything. But I think you might have given me another reason to try if I were so inclined. ;)

It's just a name for an electronic gadget that people get wrong. I do think it's a bit odd that you're so worked up about it.

It just comes off a little redundant, that's all.

Well, to clear stuff up, it's not as if I'm screaming and throwing stuff around my room and thinking about it all day is if it's the worst ordeal the world has encountered. Not at all.

All in all, it's just a thread expressing how I feel towards the fact that, when I visit countless websites (forums in different Apple fan sites, Twitter, Tumblr and so on), I find a bunch of people dedicated to bashing the name of the new iPad, when they're not even talking about the correct name in the first place. It just seems quite silly to me, and stupid because of the fact that they can't make out "new" as an adjective.

That's all there is too it. I'm not going wild and stressing out with anger, lol. It was just getting a bit annoying last night, and I figured I'd post about how I felt towards the subject, and see if anyone agree'd/disagreed.

Do you get confused too when you go to a car dealership and they never changed the name from year to year? I mean, a Civic is a Civic is a Civic, right?

I can't imagine how someone could get so upset about something so trivial. Seriously, dude, you need to get a life.

It's not trivial. If humanity has a score, it just went down a couple.

To blanket everyone that gets a name wrong with "Stupid" says something about you.

You've never gotten anything wrong, correct? Cause if you did, you must be... --At the very least you'd be thought of as "stupid" by someone very similar to you.

Do you get confused too when you go to a car dealership and they never changed the name from year to year? I mean, a Civic is a Civic is a right.

No. I don't get confused because cars at a dealership are clearly marked with the year. Are you old enough to have ever bought a car? I've bought several and I promise you, you'd never leave with a receipt that just said Civic.

To blanket everyone that gets a name wrong with "Stupid" says something about you.

By that logic, no one should ever be allowed to criticise anyone. Everyone has made mistakes, and I'd bet all I have that everyone has criticised someone else at least once.

Of course we all make mistakes, and I know I've made my fair share of mistakes on other stuff, but that doesn't take away my right to criticise others.

But it's the fact that this isn't a very complicated matter at all that makes the whole thing seem stupid. People are actually getting angry at Apple because they think the name is stupid, when the fact is, it's not the real name to begin with! That's the stupidity in this, getting angry over something that is not even fact, ranting on about **** when you're not even informed properly.

If you were a bit confused about the name at first, that's not bad, of course it isn't. But when you're going to take something that isn't even fact, and get angry at it, that makes you stupid, or it very well makes you look it.

to OP: it is actually called "the New iPad" and when the next one releases it will be named "the Newer iPad" and, obviously, the fifth generation will be called "the Newest iPad." they really are geniuses in the apple marketing department. also, once these newer ones roll out, the older ones will be called "the Tablet Formerly Known as the New iPad." it will all culminate in an official name change across the iPad product line to just a symbol.

Sure, we can criticize behavior… I do it all the time (like now). But when you call people "Stupid", that goes beyond criticism into something I consider a bit less dignified.

I want to throw these in the mix, for the sake of it.

This is how Apple usually markets new devices.

Think folks are gonna confuse it with the 2 or the first one? You're thinking too hard for other people. But, hey, anything to berate a company's awesome product, eh?
