I picked one up for my wife as she mostly used her iPad for games and browsing. She has a 64GB iPhone 6 and I bet she'll never use more than 10GB, especially since most of the songs I bought on iTunes won't download to her phone on Family Share.

I'm pleased as punch to have 64GB, though. :apple:

I don't store my music on my iPad. I store it on my phone, and I might stream it on my iPad every once in a while. So I don't care.

But I jumped for the 64 GB version because of the price.

I have not seen many comments about the base model still giving us only 16GB.

Is this a big deal in your mind? Sure it would've been nice to up it to 32, and it really can't hold a lot at 16GB, but is it a deal-breaker for you?

No problem. What ARE people using all that space for anyway - in these cloud times...?

Well that escalated for no good reason. No one is insulting dear old granny for not needing more than 16gb of storage space. Some are just expressing irritation with the fact that it exists in the base model which is perfectly understandable from a consumer standpoint as it's the least expensive IOS option in a tablet market where competitors offer alot more for alot less. Now Apple is under no such obligation to change a business strategy that works for them but for people to shut up and 'stop whining' just because the majority is satisfied with the way things are is tantamount to going against oneself in the long run as we all benefit from more consumer-friendly practices. All feedback is good feedback. Don't like it, too bad.

I clearly stated a dismay over the lack of understanding for people with different needs. 16GB device is perfectly fine for a lot of people so why wasting it and putting extra 16gb as a base for those that will probably never even reach 16gb? I know that my mum will probably never use more than few gigs so why should she have a device with 32GB as a "base" when 16GB is perfectly fine. That extra saving (even if its $10) is still there. Regardless of how you look at it, I was simply stating that people should be more considerate to those that have different needs instead of bashing a device that is not targeted to them?
If we all start to bash other products then where are we going to end up?

The poll set the tone especially with the 3rd option so hence the defence

I've been trying to think about the logic Apple employs with the capacity choices. Perhaps they see it as by offering a 16gb model at its current price it makes people feel as if they have entry level for those who don't need high capacity.

On the other hand by offering those that need high capacity 64gb for $100.00 more makes that user feel they are getting a better deal. Because most people (on these boards at least ) are higher capacity users and its a no brainer to spend more and get the larger models. If they started off at 32gb those people that don't use that much space may feel as if they are paying for more than they need even though its the same price.

I think they feel the real benefit is to give the high capacity user a better deal because if you were a 32gb buyer then 64 would be a positive to you at the same price. I don't know. I'm just guessing here.

I think you're right that it has a psychological effect which causes more people to choose the more expensive version, which probably results in more profit for apple (I can't imagine that 48gb more costs them $100).

And I have to admit that as a previous 32gb buyer, the increase to 64 felt good

I currently have a 32gb Air which is less than half full. I am loathe to pay more to get 64gb, most of which I will never use.
Very tempted to go for the 16gb which should be more than enough. A few apps, some photos and that's about it.
I've had all my music and photo libraries on the iPad in the past but never accessed them. Too many rubbish app that I never use. Will force me to keep it clean and lean, no bad thing!

I just ordered an iPad Air 2 64GB, after having sold my 16GB iPad Air tonight.
Can't believe they didn't make the 32GB the base model.

I'll probably sell my iPad Air 2 again next year, when the 3 comes out.
I doubt anyone wants to buy a 16GB by that time. One of the reasons to buy the 64GB Air 2 this time

Stocking up with enough movies to keep you occupied for a return trans Atlantic or pacific flight will bust 16gb.

Even one way depending on your watching habits.

A bunch of albums and a couple of the bigger games will make things tight as well.

32gb seemed to be bare minimum on my last holiday / vacation. Able to keep just enough content to last between high bandwidth iTunes store visits.

Yes, 16gb is too low an offering imo.

But if you never take it out of the house...less of an issue.

I don't travel and can't remember the last time I watched a movie on my iPad.
A few apps and photos is all I need. 16gb will be fine.

Been using a 16gb nexus 7 with no issues. Even travel with it a lot. Keep music on my iPhone only.

I really dislike it. 16 GB makes no sense when you need to store apps, videos, pictures, messages, and yet still have enough room clear for 6GB+ iOS updates. It's ridiculous to expect people to harbor enough space for even the most basic files.

On the other side, I realized why Apple kept 16GB and generally removed the middle option and opted for low and high storage options: they see that iPads are streaming devices for many people, and massive file indexes for other people.

It does make some sense. I had a 16GB original Mini and I basically had no saved files, just a few basic apps and never really had any issues with storage. By cutting out the middle storage, you get to have people who opt on the side of streaming, and others who are prone to storing files on their iPad.

With all the video and photo capabilities/file size, sophisticated apps, etc., there isn't enough space on a 16 GB iPhone or iPad. Some music libraries are 20 GB+. A base model of at least 32 GB would have been more suitable. I have only 15 GB left on my 64 GB 6 Plus. Wishing for more...

look ill gladly take 32 or 64 for the same price.....but I always get the base model iPad.....I used to keep all my pics, music etc on my phone and just browse and stream with my iPad.....but with iTunes match and now iCloud photo library I technically don't need the space on my phone either.....but apps are getting bigger so it would be nice if they upped it a little.

I have a 16gb nexus 7 and it serves my needs. I add movies as I need and keep couple of large games. I don't use it for music. If I need room I just delete a movie. No need keeping videos I've already watched on the device.

16gb is part of a great pricing strategy. It is not "cost plus", which can be confusing to end users. But it makes perfect sense in terms of creating pressure to upgrade. Keep in mind the 16gb ipad is still an extraordinarily capable device. With just a few select apps, you can have a massive streaming library with spotify, pandora, netflix, etc ... on top of all the other built in features. 64gb and 128gb are nice, but not entirely necessary.

I'm going with the 16gb as well. All I do from my iPad is streaming - both music and video (Netflix, Pandora etc) so don't have anything stored besides Apps (using Dropbox for all my files and iCloud for pages documents) Got a 64gb iPhone 6 though, since I use the camera alot - and lever on my iPads. Before ordering the iPad I saw how much space I'd use on my phone, and that's only 5gb!.. So, even though the price difference i small, it's there, and you don't cash in the difference in resale value later.

It's smart from a business standpoint, but ridiculous for the consumer.

I agree with you except for your last statement.

In my opinion Apple ditching the 32GB option and dropping the price on the higher capacity options was a relatively good decision. That's actually a price drop for the upper tiers.

I say "relatively good" because although we're quibbling over the storage capacity options, we're ignoring the fact that Apple does not provide a removable media option... which would be the best option for customers.
