People complain a soy everything. Apple dropped the price of the higher storage models. If 16 is too small you have a choice.

And that's why there are different versions. Choice.

no, choice would be including an SD card slot like almost everybody else does. I find the prospect of paying $100 for 48 gigs of disk space in 2014 a bit frustrating. A 64gig micro sd is about $30.

i understand the "don't want it, don't buy it" value is subjective argument, i really do. but as a long-time Mac lover this has always kept me away from the iphone and a bit "arms-length" from the ipad.

i love the statement that a walled garden is not a prison as it applies to macs, but i am less convinced it's applicable to an ipad and even less to the iphone when it comes to fleecing us on storage space.

also, soy is bad for you:p

Do people really pay $500 dollars just to surf the web?

yes

I would have preferred they give you 32GB as a base model but that's not happening. What would be nice is if the 16GB of storage was truly all for storage. Meaning, it actually has like 20GB but the extra 4GB is kept for just the OS and updates or whatever. The fact that you really end up with only about 12GB or so to actually use is what's frustrating.

I don't do base models anyways but people who do are going to be in full blown storage space management mode to make it work.

That's exactly a big part of the problem right now. With iOS 8 on a 16GB device you start with 12GB of free storage. When a major OS update OTA like iOS 8 requires 5GB of space (most of it needed temporarily), we shouldn't be surprised that only 46% have updated to iOS 8 when a year ago 70% had updated to iOS 7.

I agree with you except for your last statement.

In my opinion Apple ditching the 32GB option and dropping the price on the higher capacity options was a relatively good decision. That's actually a price drop for the upper tiers.

I say "relatively good" because although we're quibbling over the storage capacity options, we're ignoring the fact that Apple does not provide a removable media option... which would be the best option for customers.

Well, I think for people like you and me the storage upgrades are a no-brainer. Then you have folks like my mom or my gf's parents that might install an app once in a blue moon and haven't the slightest inkling or desire to connect their ipad to a computer. I basically just shove some streaming apps on there and hope they use them in addition to email and Safari. For people like that, 16gb is plenty.

On the other side, I realized why Apple kept 16GB and generally removed the middle option and opted for low and high storage options: they see that iPads are streaming devices for many people, and massive file indexes for other people.

It does make some sense. I had a 16GB original Mini and I basically had no saved files, just a few basic apps and never really had any issues with storage. By cutting out the middle storage, you get to have people who opt on the side of streaming, and others who are prone to storing files on their iPad.

That doesn't make much sense to me. How is it a benefit to anyone to split the consumer into 2 such camps? Apple could have just pushed everything up a step and released 32/64/128

I think it really is just about getting people to pay an extra 100 for their device.
Not trying to save the low end consumer 100.

I always get the 16GB. It's more than adecequate for me. With iCloud I never really run up too much space. But I wouldn't argue if they made the base model 32GB.

The sense it makes in in your second paragraph.

How do you feel about the 16GB base model (still)?

I can't quite understand why they even make a 16gb anything anymore. It's exactly the same with the iPhones. I recently upgraded from iPhone 4s to 6 plus & can't quite understand even now why most people, I would think would realistically need the 32gb which is what I had in the 4s. I had it just over 2years & when I got to the end of it was at something like 28.1gb & there was loads of things I had to delete. I watch so many people deleting photos & music to make room for update & latest iOS version, I can't see why they didn't make 32gb standard.

The 16Gb is ideally placed for companies that provide iPads to large workforces. Many companies and public authorities do not allow the storage of documents etc on hard drives or pads and are most likely to use one of the cloud based storage systems.

This is a way for Apple to up sell its products. Look at the base 16gb iPad line up.

iPad Mini: $249
iPad Mini 2: $300
iPad Mini 3: $399
iPad Air: $399
iPad Air: $499

No matter what you buy, a better version is $50-100 more. Want more storage? For $50-100 you get anywhere between double to quadruple the amount of space. It's easy for a sales rep or the customer to convince themselves to spend more money. Apple strategically prices its products this way. We have to remember that Apple is a company that's selling products to make money.

My biggest gripe was that my mom uses her iPad for casual browsing. Just having a few small apps + pages, keynote, numbers, etc resulted in me having to connect the iPad to the computer to update because there wasn't enough space. That's not very user friendly because a majority of customers don't know they can do that. Instead they start deleting apps/data.

16gb people are getting ripped off...either iPhones or iPads...499?
16gb was originally 399 (ex: iPad 2)....these sneaky apple are smart in a way... indirectly forcing people to purchase higher capacity. 64 had always been 599...so what's so special about that? only 128 was special because they only offered it...otherwise is still the same...just 100 dollars more than 64 gb.

Gateway marketing

Getting people to part with their money is not easy.

They see $499 and that's it.

Then a few days after the return date they realize it's not enough.

So they start planning for an upgrade.

I have 16gb. I play games on it. But nothing really big. A few times I've had to delete some stuff but it was okay because It was mostly apps I didn't use anymore.

16 is okay for me. I just think that storage should be cheap enough that they would offer 32, especially because the iOS counts against that number.

I would never buy a 16GB Apple device but I think it has it's place for those who want to keep the costs down. If you are not big on movies and do not need 500 apps, the 16GB model price makes the difference on if a buyer has the money to buy or not.

I agree but how much more does it really cost to just make the 32gb the base model and keep it at $499.99 ....

I've been buying the low end 16GB model iPhone and iPad for years but this year was the first time I started really feeling the space crunch. While I got a 16GB iPhone I splurged on the iPad and got a 128GB one. Well worth the money as now I have more than enough space to load a few movies and plenty of games.

So much complaining. It is what it is. Buy it or not.

Exactly. Instead of looking at it as Apple only has a 16GB base model, think of it as Apple made the 64GB cheaper. You get 4x the storage for $100. That's pretty good in the Apple universe imo.

Not everyone is like you. I would have been ok with a 16gb 6plus but opted for the 64gb because it's a better deal.

I have not seen many comments about the base model still giving us only 16GB.

Is this a big deal in your mind? Sure it would've been nice to up it to 32, and it really can't hold a lot at 16GB, but is it a deal-breaker for you?

I went with 64gb for the first ever time. Always bought 16gb.

I have a 16gb 6+, and I'm a "power user". I currently have 4GB left, thanks to the operating system, texts, and apps. I have an iPod classic that I store my entire music library on, so no need to store any music on my phone. Prior to the iPod classic, I was using iTunes Match on my iPhone. The 16gb suits me just fine, but like others have said, I would be happier if Apple made the base model 32gb.

I think there are many users for who 16gb is enough, but I don't understand why they could double the 32 and 64 versions, and the 16 not. It probably would't cost them much more, and it would be a nice gesture to the buyers.

That's my thinking on it, with users now aware that updates need 5gb, if Apple started their range of tech with 32gb buyers would be impressed.

Unfortunately many will be cynical and assume it's to steer more people to the more expensive models. Which as we know Apple make more money on.

As much a 16gb is enough for some users, wouldn't it be nice for customers to get more than enough by default?
