I think I am going to go for it and try this stuff out. I have decided on these items

Now I just need the shaving cream. I am assuming I cannot use my standard can-style dispensable cream with a brush? What type should I buy? Are there any good ones on this page (just so all my stuff is from one place)

Thanks

Best advice I was ever given is go buy a $5 shower mirror and shave when you take a shower. All the steam and warm water after you shave and finish your shower leaves your face without irritation.

Put my order in, the place I got it from is only 1.6 miles away but it is not a physical store so had to order it over the net.

I got

and a stand, grand total £107.70

this is cool. like a new little club of wetshavers. can we get tshirts made? secret handshake?

Agreed!

I was watching those videos that you posted and also ran across an "advanced techniques" video. One of the methods was with a multi blade razor (mach 3) and is called "blade buffing." I gave it a try today and I can say I don't think I've ever got a shave that close using my mach 3. It basically involves moving the blade forward and backward without much pressure and without lifting it off the skin. Just DO NOT go side to side!

I have too many secret handshakes to remember already.

I think it is funny how we all went and found the same things, I tried the gilette slide and he blade buffing as well. I quite like the slide, the buffing had pretty good results however I think is far to advanced for the new kit. Will just just try and get the basics down for the next couple of weeks.

Yeah, the buffing looked a little scary for a DE razor. You have to lift it and place it back down again, in a fast scrubbing manor. Yikes!

So they say that w/ a DE razor, you apply very little pressure. But is it still easier to cut yourself with one?

I'd love to see photos of the kit, and more if possible.

I'm not convinced that this method is much better, but I'm entirely close-minded. I feel that I get a poor shave because I don't put effort or time into it. If I put as much effort into shaving as the guys in the YouTube videos, I think I may get a great result. For example, if I shave after coming out of the shower (which I already do), and I use regular shaving cream and produce lather for 3-4 minutes (rather than 20 seconds), I can shave well if I spent 15-20 minutes doing it.

Anyways, if it works for you guys, I'm going to buy a kit. :D

I hope you don't mind me using you guys as guinea pigs. In Australia, all the "cheap" stuff you can get in the USA costs double in Australia, so this wouldn't prove to be a cheap experiment for me.

My kit arrived today

They look the same as the pictures above so not going to repost them. Also I got a free bowl and some free shaving soap

The razor is quite weight and feels very solid. Unfortunately I already had a shave today so can't try it out. The sandalwood shaving cream smells edible.

^ Nice stand makes it look very classy, I was looking at getting a 3 piece stand but they were all about £40 so just got a brush stand for £9 to try and keep the costs down. I'm sure if this takes off I will get a combo stand to keep it all together.

How was the first shave?

That stand and razor/brush set looks awesome. I'm also curious to hear how your first shave went, if it helped any.

I need to go spend more money now. ;)

Well first off I have to say that the weight of the razor is really nice. Unlike most razors from the drugstore, this one actually feels solidly built. The other thing is that the tub-style shaving cream with a brush does really lather up a lot better than the can-style creams. And it really does not take that much longer, all things considered. In terms of the actual shaving experience, for my first time I was pretty careful and not too aggressive because I have read that it is a lot easier to cut yourself with a DE safety razor. So my first pass was just trying to get the maneuvers down. I nicked my chin a little bit but nothing terrible. I tried again today with more success, which makes me feel confident that with a little more time it will prove to be much better than my old methods of shaving. Shaving with this type of razor is just different than with other razors so I have to readjust my technique somewhat. I'll let you know after a few more days how it goes. Did you get a chance to try yours yet, xUKHCx?

Hehe, yeah, I just bought this set after purchasing my new Mac Pro and 23" ACD... so my wallet is going to be a little empty for a while now
