You simply don't buy it if you need to justify it. This kind of purchase requires no justifications. The reason why you buy an unnecessarily expensive product with stand-alone features is self-explanatory. If it is not obvious, then perhaps you should not buy it.

OMG This^^ and more THIS^^^ Preach brother Preach!

It's the price and experimental feel to the X and the stillborn feel of the 8 that has me looking for a used 7 so I can see how this is going to play out.

Seriously...how do you justify it to yourself for a 256gb X upgrade/purchase? I mean with tax and Apple care (which is $50 more than what it used to be), it works out to about $1400! ..for a phone..that'll probably last about 3-4 years. Those of you who say their current phone doesn't put up with me anymore..would a cheaper 8 not cut it? Why X? I know you may be able to afford it, but why throw away money?

Curious to know your reasons..
I just watched this youtube video on the X. Is everything this guy is saying true? I'm still moving forward with my purchase on the X, and this is how I justify it, because it's basically free for me. At work we have this incentive program where the company drops cash into an debit card issued to each employee. I've never touched it and saw I've accumulated a little over $1000. I'm just going to use it all up on the X and pay the balance. But in NO WAY will I be purchasing Apple Care.

I don't need to justify anything to myself if I want it.

I want it. I get it. If I have to wait to get it for a while, so what. I get what I want.

Screw justifying it. If I bought everything based on whether I could justify it or not I'd own nothing I want.

I do agree with you, OP, $1400 is a lot to spend on a phone. If not for this incentive program we have at work where the company deposits cash into our company issued debit card (which I consider fun money), I probably would be looking at a Project Red 7 Plus.

The heart wants what the heart wants...why should anyone try to justify their choices?

To you? To me? To anyone?

Well if the resale value is similar to other iPhones then theoretically it will hold up enough to offset the cost of the new version next year by $300-$350 so paying that amount for the X is just a one time thing. With carrier financing you'll never end up paying the full price anyway if you keep upgrading every year.

I'm buying the 256GB X because I want it and can afford it. If you need to justify a purchase, regardless of what it is, you shouldn't be making said purchase.

Yet, people are willing to spend $2000+ on Macbooks too. A phone is used, in most cases, more than a laptop and mobile devices will be increasingly expensive as laptops become irreverent.
Also, if you saved $31.11 per day since the reveal of the iPhone, you could buy an iPhone X 256GB with it. I know, not everyone can save that much, but the functionality that someone can get is up to them if they want to shell out the money. Also, Apple is intending to create a luxury good out of the iPhone X, no longer is it about what year phone you have, it's the social status of saying "Yeah, I paid $1000 for my phone, come at me." While this is incredibly dumb, to only buy for the status, people do it and Apple is here to make money.

For some people, this is also a hobby, they're tech enthusiasts, they like having the latest and greatest - for some there's more of a utilitarian perspective, it needs to do X/Y/Z, and sometimes for the least cost. I don't sweat spending on tech, no justification, it's my fun, my hobby, my profession (well, development).

I just watched this youtube video on the X.

He's an idiot, don't do that again ... :D

Why is this not in Swift 4?

Because they wanted it to run in a browser :p

The way I justify the 256 iPhone X is that it’s around 7.46 more then what i pay every month to my carrier for my iPhone 7 Plus 256. Plus I am a tech enthusiast so I was able to justify the cost.

For me it's not wether I can afford it or not.
Off course I can afford it in full but do I want to pay that outrageous high price?
Hell No.
Is face id, animoji and an OLED screen worth paying that much for a device that seems like a failed rushed out beta experiment?
I love iPhones but this is the first year that I feel like this device is not interesting me at all and doesn't justify its price tag.
I know many will still buy it but I feel there's many that will get underwhelmed and turned off like me.

I have the upgrade every year option but I am doing the same and sitting back this year, no 128gb this year and that was a sweet spot for me on my 7+, 256 is too much and 64gb is too small and cutting it really close, app sizes are getting bigger, 4K videos are becoming even bigger and all the settings and options in the phone gonna take up a bit of the space, I’m hoping next year Apple gives us the 128gb option back.

The X doesn’t impress me, the oled screen is few years behind Samsung current oled technology, the face id is on version one and it won’t be all that great, we will see a bigger leap next year, if I am going to put down 1k on a phone I rather wait another year and get something truly worth upgrading.

Same way as I justified the Martin 00-15SE, Martin OM-28, Gibson LP Standard and Fender American Professional Telecaster guitars I purchased and only being a beginning guitar player (hadn't even started lessons when I purchased them).
Simply because I wanted them and they were the tools that I wanted to work with and I can afford them.

I have examined my needs and wants as well as my financial situation, and I have determined that I want it and that I can afford it and that the X will meet my requirements; therefore, I am not "throwing money away". The iPhone is my main, everyday, go-to computer. There, justified.

Wet blankets have been trotting out this line of thinking since the original iPhone (long before that actually, regarding any number of unrelated expensive products). Even when most of the cost of the iPhone was buried in carrier contracts, some asked "how can you justify spending $200 on a PHONE!?". Countless people would say to me, "you spent $200 on that? I got this phone for 'free'". I bow to your wisdom.

How can you justify spending X dollars on a camera, a bicycle, a vehicle, a watch, a TV, golf clubs, a pool, granite counter tops, dog food, tuition, etc? If it's not for you, fine. Don't be so arrogant that just because you can't see spending money on a thing that there's not a good reason for others to spend money on that thing. Some people just love raining on others' parades.
