I don't see the necessity, but It would make more sense, in getting rid of the headphones jack, to move to usb c.

That is a standard the entire industry can move towards. By sticking with lightning, Apple may gain profit off of accessories in the short term, but may loose in the long term. It seems short sited to me.

The entire industry could move to USB c, with a uniform standard across smartphones, laptops, tablets, cars, etc, etc. Instead, if the industry does, you will need adapters to work outside of Apple prodcuts. Doesn't seem like the best move....

I use it and will miss it. But the talk about its omission has been going on for so long that I'm over it. I'll deal with not having it when the time comes.

I probably won't get the iPhone 7 because of it though, at least not near launch. If Apple offers some sort of proprietary replacement (bluetooth technologies and lightning) I want 3rd party manufacturers to start pushing out a wide assortment of products at reasonable prices for me to choose from.

At first it really bothered me, but I've been using bluetooth headphones for awhile now and prefer them over the wire. I'll be okay with it if Apple devises a way to simultaneously charge the iPhone while using lightning headphones.

The last time I ever plugged in a pair of headphone in to the headphone jack was probably in college.

I used to use the Aux cable input from my car a lot, but then I got a new car that was equipped with bluetooth and usb input last year, and the headphone jack was since then, never ever utilized.

...

What you think?

Sync your phone to your hearts content.

ALL the features touted by the pro-removal folks could have been true without the removal of 3.5mm. The iPod Touch is thinner, WITH 3.5mm. Other phones are waterproof with the 3.5mm plug. Lightening headphones have been available for a while, it's just that no ones uses them because they are less convenient and less versatile than 3.5mm headphones. Bluetooth needs to be charged constantly, where as you don't have that inconvenience with a wired pair.

Enjoy your bluetooth only world. Sadly, not everyone fits your usage profile. Lots of travelers are going to be inconvenienced as link provided points out, along with all radios in hotels having 3.5mm inputs.

I'm REALLY not a fan, but Apple has done MANY things I do not like, in the last couple of years - Glued in Everything, half hearted AppleTV, lack of timely Mac updates, etc..

A few years from now no one will care about the removal of the 3.5 Audio Jack.

This is an echo of the removal of the Super Drive from the original MacBook Air.

I say its more like Sammy's removal of the SD card on the S6/note 5. They brought it back a year later. I would be fine if Apple implemented wireless charging so it can be charged and have plugged headphones at the same time.

Having fun carrying around yet another adapter every time you travel, to get back the functionality that Apple is taking away from us.

In all of life's curveballs, I try not to sweat the small stuff. In the scheme of things, to me this is nothing to lose sleep over. I don't have bluetooth in my car. I currently use wired headphones. But if I get the 7, my hope is that I will still wake up the next day and life will carry on.

There will be adapters, alternatives, and work-arounds. Sometimes I wonder if I am one of a mere few who make a decent living in these forums. Yeah, a 256gb 7 Plus after tax will likely cost me $1,018. But I just sold my 128 6S for $700 on Swappa. I will fork over $320 to have a phone that quite frankly I am looking forward to. If I am "forced" to either use an adapter or God forbid shell out $20 for one......so what? If the cost involved with owning an iPhone is too much for you then perhaps it's time you move on. If you feel Apple is not giving you flagship specs, then move on. I really think that a lot of people around these forums are either just naturally negative or thirst for a reason to bitch.

It has nothing to do with income, buddy.

It's a greedy move, plain and simple. If your happy to shell out more money for the same functionality, go ahead.

If it wasn't greed, they would do the same thing via USB c.

People complain about the cost of the phone in these forums every single day like Apple owes them a certain level of functionality. Apple does't owe you a thing. If you don't like what they offer, vote with your wallet. And until they take the stage and explain why this is being done, you have no idea the reason. You probably complained about the move to the 8 pin charging cable because you had to replace all of your cables. And look, you're still here. If you think they are greedy, if you think they have no reason to make this move from ancient tech than to make another buck, then move on. Android has plenty of offerings for you. I'll grab a pair of wireless headphones since it's an overdue move anyway.

Assumptions, is that your justification for being rude?

I was all for the move away from the 8 pin connector. It was bulky and outdated.

I am using android, one with an iPad pro and windows computing.I use what I consider to be the best. Why the hell does the matter?

Again, maybe try and see the reality of the situation. USB c is superior in all forms to lightning cable, period. Apple won't be using lightning on their MacBook, will they? Find a justification? You can't, outside of profit on licensing accessories.

So, again, your assumptions are incorrect and asinine. I haven't gripped once as android and laptops move to usb c. If the tech is superior, then go for it. Lightning is the inferior technology at this point.

Lol. Who said it matters what you are using? I can guarantee you I couldn't care less. Listen, you can continue to whine all you want about Apple's decision to move away from the headphone jack. It will get you two things. Wasted time and no change in outcome. As for my assumptions being incorrect and asinine? Great! That means two of us didn't mind the change to a the 8 pin connector. As for assuming Apple's reason for the move? I am not assuming.....you are. I guess i just choose to live a life where I don't get all worked up over things this trivial. I can't imagine living that type of life.

Agreed.... And I don't live that life. I was just adding my opinion. While I love my iPad, I haven't used an iPhone as my main device for more than a few months at a time for a while now. That doesn't mean I won't in the future, and that doesn't mean I deny that it's a great device. Apple's where they are at because they were at one point the most Innovative company in the world, I just worry that they are moving more towards a profit centric approach. But then again all Empires Must Fall, as history has shown. An Equalization in the technology field between Apple and its competitors is only good for the consumer anyway.

And all the while, look down your nose at everyone else.

Let them eat cake!!

For many people, it's a real inconvenience. And it's a blatant money grab by Apple.

I see where you are coming from. I guess maybe in reality, I am just trying to get myself to come to terms with this move. Cause honestly, when I thought maybe they were going to add a second speaker, or use the space for something useful, I was 'ok' with it. But in reality, that probably isn't the case. My only guess outside of what you mention about them milking more profit would be that this is part of a larger plan? Maybe it is necessary for what they plan to do with the 2017 design but didn't want the flack with that phone so they are going to take the hit on this one? I have no idea. But honestly yes I see where you are coming from. I guess if nothing else it will be interesting to see how they frame this, or spin this, on Wednesday. I never should have responded the way I did due to the mood I have been in today. I apologize to you. Have a good night.

For me intel is pushing Apple to adopt so they can make money from the USB type C copyrights... for other brands and let apple using the technology for free.

Wouldn't Intel push apple to adopt USB c then? This doesn't even benefit intel until USB c becomes the defecto audio standard.... Which isn't happening for a while.

bluetooth headphones: pairing issues, volume issues, another thing to charge.
Some would say sound quality issues.
Selection issues--very few quality ones.

I've been fooled so many times by bluetooth where sometimes the music starts startingly loud, or if it doesn't scare me, then an incoming call would or a notification would (more so on Android since it does not have good attention to details like this), or the pairing would take a good minute to find my headphones, or whatever bluetooth accessory it is.

There is no way that this is going to end well, although it always does for Apple. Someone needs to calculate the extra money Apple will be making on the selling of bluetooth headphones and ligthning adapters as a direct result of this. I would not be surprised if it's 25 billion over the next two years. Not chump change.

This is a new variation on the gilette give away the razors, make money on selling the blades idea.
Except in this case, Apple makes a new razor that doesn't do anything better, but requires a new set of blades that may or may not cut you while shaving :>

Thank you, Apple!

I plug it into my car at least twice per day. Sometimes much more. I plug in my headphones about once per day. I'm fine with lightning headphones for the phone, except, I also use them for lots of other things too. So now I need buy another set for everything else. Possibly plus adapters. Possibly extra adapters with pass through charging.

Wireless everything is inevitable. It's a good thing. But at this early stage there's a real price to pay for lots of people.

No problem here. I just rented a car in Washington state and didn't sync my phone. I only plugged it in to keep it charged. I used turn by turn directions via phone speaker.

For music I used the car's radio because I wanted to hear local traffic and news as well as music.

Oh and in the hotel I simply used BT and charged overnight. What's the big deal about a hotel?

I don'y really know. The only thing that may be annoying will bz the charge & listening to music thing. It happens to me sometimes, I just hope there will be a good adaptator for it... And I hope Apple made good use of the space gained by this removal. Stereo speakers & bigger battery please.
