Needing a sub-forum aside, does anyone have an aftermarket CarPlay head unit? I have a 2015 Altima, and the NissanConnect is just pure garbage. I want to upgrade to a CarPlay unit, but I want a place to do some research. I've searched through the Crutchfield reviews, but they're all subjective to each unit, and I haven't found anything comparing several units to help me with my decision.

It's hard to believe that an Apple-centric forum like MacRumors still doesn't have a dedicated sub-forum to discuss CarPlay.

It is becoming one of Apple's key operating systems (behind OSX & iOS but ahead of tvOS & watchOS) and is gaining in importance every year.

MR is oddly stubborn about it.

I find that hard to believe so is it just your opinion or do you have evidence to back that statement?

CarPlay is not heavily publicised on Apple's web site and is only listed as an iOS 9 feature. The Apple Watch and Apple TV have a big presence on the website suggesting Apple consider them to be more important.
I do not have any hard stats to support my position, but am basing it on the accelerating adoption of CarPlay by car manufacturers and the approaching launch of Apple's own car - - they are clearly motivated to increase their penetration in this new market.

Admittedly, it's a subjective decision, and one that the admins, not the moderators, get to make, but they need to balance forum interest with forum bloat. If there aren't enough threads created on the topic, it's hard to justify the need for a separate subforum. They also need to take into account how different the new product is. That was the case with Apple Watch. It isn't though with the iPad Pro, for example, which doesn't have its own subforum.

I agree with you about the issue of forum bloat. Every time I go to the MacRumors' forum home page, I scroll down and down and down looking for the relevant sub-forum matching my current interest.

However, I believe the cause of this bloat is an overly nostalgic retention of sub-forums related to products long past their prime. Prime space is granted to such forum categories as:

- iPod
- Alternatives to iOS and iOS Devices
- PowerPC Macs
- Console Games
- Distributed Computing

I'm not suggesting that these topics should be dispensed with, or that they do not have their fans here at MacRumors, but rather that they are focused on peripheral or past aspects of Apple consumers' interest, and therefore might be more deeply nested to keep the main forum list cleaner.

CarPlay is a forward looking Apple technology in which forum members' interest will only continue to grow as their own personal cars adopt this technology.

I'm like you. Really want to put a CP unit in my Subaru. I know a fellow who has put two Pioneer 4100NEX in two of his Subarus using cables produced by a DIY supplier and says they work great but (a) I can't find a place to buy one, and (2) getting the interface cables is not easy.

For those who find their way to this thread on their search for the still MIA MacRumors CarPlay forum, CarPlayLife.com is one website that keeps up-to-date on CarPlay news and documents aftermarket CarPlay installs on older model cars.

Does anyone actually use car play, it's a bit of a ugly still born project..

I know my Audi has it listed at being possible, but there's no way iOS is going inside my car. Which begs the question, since it's just iOS, it already has a forum...

I'm running the Nvidia Virtual cockpit on the Audi, i hazard you haven't used it and are not in a position to make that comment.. I've used CarPlay, and its sucks.. its tedious how it works with moving in and out of apps, rather than the tabs in android. i'd go as far as saying the android is leaps ahead of the limited features of CarPlay.

^ That is just the sort of topic that would make for an engaging and lively discussion in a MacRumors' CarPlay forum!

Some things can and will be improved about CP, but I really like it.

I've searched for CarPlay related threads and found that only 10 new threads have been posted by forum members since the 1st January (not including your 2 feedback threads). Those 10 threads have only attracted 34 replies over the last 3 months.

In my opinion, such low traffic is not enough to justify it's own forum.

With all due respect, I think it's kind of ridiculous to use the argument of low traffic to say that there's no need for a CarPlay forum. Most likely, part of the reason why there aren't many CarPlay related threads is because no one knows what section to post them in, so they end up going to other sites with CarPlay forums like iMore.

If there's room for a forum for PowerPC Macs that have been obsolete for close to 10 years, there should really be a section for CarPlay as it is current and growing.

For a site that is largely about Apple rumors (i.e. what is up and coming in the Apple universe) why would we need to have established traffic for a CarPlay forum to exist? It's a site where we discuss things that haven't even been announced about Apple products, but we don't have a forum for an Apple service which already exists? Doesn't really make that much sense to me.

You need to realize that the PowerPC forum is still very active, even nowadays.

Here are some examples of less active sub-forums:

- Distributed Computing - 5 active threads, with 35 posts total so far this year
- tvOS Programming - 4 active threads, with 13 posts total so far this year
And as I said earlier:

Lol nice. Since there's no CP here, I post in a car forum about CP, though I'd prefer to do it here. You'd think MR would want to traffic.

I am with the OP, it is needed. I can see CarPlay getting big, especially if the "Apple Car" is released in 2020. I would love to see reviews about it from others before I purchase my next truck. I think this is something we need for sure.

Google has just announced a major update to Android Auto. My bet is that they rushed it out as an attempted preemptive strike against Apple, who may be launching their own update of CarPlay at next month's WWDC.

...and MacRumors seems so dead set against any discussion of automobile operating systems, that they didn't even mention the Android Auto update in their front page story: Google I/O 2016: Assistant, Home, Allo, Duo, Android N, and More (no, not even in the "and More" section).

I'm beginning to wonder whether if MacRumors has a secret anti-car bicycle advocacy agenda. ;)

Can't say I saw anything mentioned about Android Auto in all kinds of Google I/O articles or videos or discussions I came across, so it seems it's not just MacRumors apparently.
