Seems the more expensive (Apple Watch) stainless steal and sapphire display, doesn't hold up as well as the lighter (Apple Watch Sport) aluminum case and ion glass display. I would love to know how many of these Sports models that Best Buy sold through-out the Christmas season for $100 off and in some cases on open box models it was as little at $240.

The sport has been flying off the shelves, but the expensive models remained, for the most part.

Of course it holds up well- it holds up better! I used to have a Sports model (maybe friends have one too) and it scratched like crazy....even though I babied it. I've not had the SS version since May and it is still pristine. Even though I bumped it many times. Plus a Cape Cod cloth removed any minor scratches to the SS model very easily. You get what you pay for in my book.

That sapphire display is strong as hell. I've seen the tests. It's just a bit more prone to shattering. As you've said, the regular SS model can be scratched, but you can buff it out. The black SS, on the other hand, is hard as hell to scratch to begin with, because of the DLC.

....and sometimes we have to rationalize and justify spending more money to get what we pay for too! I paid a whopping $268 for my watch. I am not being careful or worried about it being scratched. It's a watch! However, in just about all the scratch testing I've seen they have all said these SS models scratch much easier. Any of them will scratch that is a give me. Clearly value is in the eye of the beholder! I would NEVER spend $300 for $400 more for a watch as they just don't mean enough to me. The Watch is just a companion to the iPhone and other than convenience just don't bring enough to the table for me to spend big dollars on. You are right I got exactly what I paid for and I am happy! :)

Not trying to be combative, but I'm wondering where you saw this...

As far as scratching are you guys talking about the case aluminum vs stainless steel scratching or the ion glass (basically gorilla glass) vs sapphire crystal scratching? Hard to tell from your posts.

I have gone on YouTube and just checked out various videos on the Apple Watch Scratch Test.

It would appear that most of what I've watched was more related to the case. Those some of them do also test the display to see how they hold up to scratching. The ion glass is more subject to scratching, but less likely to shatter vs the sapphire crystal. Just to clarify this isn't me saying these things I am just repeating from videos I've watched on YouTube.

I only have one watch and I don't plan on putting it thru any scratch test, but I am also not going to baby it either. It's a watch so I just wear it. Now that doesn't mean I won't take some precautions like a screen protector, but I do that on all my Apple iDevices.

The regular stainless steel case seems to be pretty scratch prone. A search on this forum will verify this. A few YouTube videos talk about it too. Though, you also do have the option of polishing those scratches right out.

The sapphire screen is extremely hard to scratch. It does shatter easier, but it seems more than likely that you'd drop it and shatter it before you scratch it. Ion-X glass can take drops somewhat better, but it will get scratches easier.

Aluminum casing on the sport doesn't scratch as easily as stainless steel, but it can still scratch, just like that.

As for the casing on the black stainless steel, there's very few who say they've damaged the watch at all. Did a search the other day and most people who had anything to say about it were talking about the bracelet. I only recall seeing 3 cases of damaged casing, and one of them had a shattered display too. It seems the only cosmetic issues that are happening is if the DLC gets busted through, and the regular stainless steel is showing or something is hit hard enough that the material deposits on the coating.

I can't wait to see a test where somebody seriously takes the thing to the limit.

Either way though, if I couldn't have the black SS, I'd take the regular SS before I take a sport. I'm not even talking about fashion-wise. It seems they'd end up looking better over time.

I agree with your overall summation which pretty much confirms what I've read and seen on YouTube. In regards to which one to purchase I can see your point. But it seem with minimal effort either one could hold up very well overtime. We've already seen a couple of threads where people have posted pictures of the alum and SS version that look remarkably good. Clearly it's a personal choice based on each persons goal. Mine for example was to spend the least amount of money, as I will likely upgrade when the next version rolls around. Once this thing gets a bit more seasoned I'll then consider spending more money as I'd be more apt to keep it longer, but not on this first version.

I looked at a few others today roaming around waiting for Genius Bar...there were definitely some pretty ****ed sport watches. Some stainless that seemed fine.

Makes me sick but there are people out there who like to scratch products in stores. A shop I know got camera's and the most expensive Canon lenses on a display. I'm shocked about the scratches on those products. I don't think it's about haters but just sick minds that enjoy ruening products they cant afford.

Finally I got a scratch on the side, a very small and light one, from putting my hand in my pocket. Denim can scratch 7000series?

Rivits do...

Yeah, I get what you mean. I'm just extremely cautious.

I got the sports on launch day and later switched to the SS in August. After 3.5 months I had 1 Nick in the aluminium casing but you couldn't see it unless you brought it up to the light. I had no marks on the screen. My SS is still in good condition. I thought that it would get badly scratched and I'd have to keep getting the scratches polished out but so far it's still looking good. If I shine s torch light on it I can see some scratches but in normal light they are not visible.

Let me be frank here, I haven't used smart watch so far, but soon I'm planning to make purchase on Apple smart watch. Soon I'll be back here & I'll share my experience.

Finally got a scratch on my Sport screen after four months of use; was moving a chair and scraped the corner VERY roughly on the wall and it's left a few deep scratches on the corner of the screen. Since it's the bezel that got scratched and my watch is space gray it's almost impossible to see the scratches unless you're looking for them, but they're definitely there. Just makes me sad because up until this point the whole casing and even the screen have been absolutely flawless, no scratches whatsoever.

Been about 10 days with mine. At first, had screen and protectors on it, but they dimmed the shine a little, and I couldn't use cases with that, so I took that stuff off. Already accidentally rubbed it up against things a few times. Rubbed it up against a table and, while swinging my keys, one flew over and touched my watch. Tested a couple cases out as well, which I initially thought might mark it up. No scratches on my watch.

I've had my she since launch date and I don't have any scratches.

I found another ding in the case of my SGS tonight. It's only noticeable to me under certain light so it's fine. I think, next time, I'd opt for a silver aluminum or a stainless steel.

Just fallen victim :(

I could cry right now, wearing my sgs while playing with the dog, as he turnt he knocked my arm into the door and its left a very fine small scuff on the grey area. Very small and hardly noticeable to some but noticeable to me :(

If anyone is truly worried about getting scratches on their watch, do yourself a favor and pony up the extra cash and get the Black SS. It holds up the best out of all the watch materials. Whatever they used to color/coat the BSS is extremely scratch resistant.

The SS is the biggest offender. I've seen other people with the SS and you can see all the scratches from a good distance away. You can see what I'm talking about from the pictures people post on this forum.

I'm very happy I bought the BSS. It's only been 4 months since I bought it and it looks as new as when I first took it out of the box.

Was just doing some cleaning. Reached past a server, to pick something up, and the watch screen rubbed up against the corner of the metal mounting attachment. Not a scratch.
