I haven't heard anything one way or the other. But it seems clear that the Mac Pros are overdue for an upgrade and there weren't any suitable processors to upgrade to until Monday's announcement by Intel.

There was talk that supply issues might be the current constraint, so I do think it's an any-day now sort of situation. I'm not sure if they'll bother waiting until MWSF, since it sounds like there are other plans in the works for that event (thin macbook rumors etc...)

Thanks for your insight. Hopefully Apple pulls through and surprises us all this month. I'll do my best to hang on as long as I can.

I knew it. Your going to wait until the pros get upgraded. VERY smart decision because its going to be 18 months before it happens again.

The Mac Pro will NEVER be upgdraded. EVER. In fact, all existing Mac Pros will spontaneously DOWNgrade themselves to 128k Apple ][e's w/ green screens tomorrow.:D

Later in the week, Apple will announce that from now it will ONLY sell iPods and ONLY in pink.:p

Well as someone here in this thread said, the longer we wait, the bigger the release. I do hope that this long over due update will make :apple: make a substantial upgrade to the Mac Pro besides the new Intel chips otherwise it'd be a real bummer.

Here's the MAJOR things that need to be done to the Mac Pro other than just the new Xeon Chips:

1) PLEASE update the video cards: a) Nvidia 8800GT (the real bargain)
b) ATI 3800 (either 50 or 70 but anything is
better than the x1900xt at this rate.
c) Quadro (Nvidia just released new ones)

2) How's about allowing the Wester Digital Raptor or SCSI or SAS hard drives

3) Blu-Ray Burner

4) eSATA, unless FireWire has an answer to the upcoming USB 3.0

5) And this is a long shot but how's about the bottom of the line Mac Pro come with an Intel Xtreme Core 2 Quad (for the price we pay for, it'd be nice)

I am really considering buying a MacPro tomorrow, whether there's an update or not. Am I foolish to do so if nothing is updated tomorrow? I am sure I would be able to tell a huge difference in going from G4 Dual 800mhz to a Dual Dual-Core 2.66ghz. Making a jump that big would I really be able to tell the difference between the MacPro Woodcrest and the MacPro Penryn? I'm sure Penryn would cut my time in half encoding and stuff, just not sure what to do if there is nothing tomorrow. :(
I don't even have a Macintosh at home to wait and work. So you should be able to wait with all your stuff ;). Especially since as you know it's really the worst time to buy a 2000$+ thing.

Surprised Apple are waiting so long but...

I think Apple are waiting on some component availablity before releasing the new Mac Pro. Either its the Penryn Xeons themselves or the new 5400i chipset (there was an article on the Inquirer about a new version of the 5400 that has improved memory performance) that is holding things up or maybe they are waiting on the release of the Radeon 3800 series, which is this week.
I am sure they are getting the first dibs on the new Penryns, Apple have consistantly SHIPPED (not announced) every new Intel CPU before any other OEM since they went Intel. I don't see this one being any different. All other OEM's that have already announced penryn-based product are not shipping till december or Jan.
So have a bit more patience and you will be rewarded......:D

I've seen some "unofficial" benchmarks of the new ATI 3800 series...... and the 8800GT beats them both. I REALLY hope Apple puts an 8800 of some variety in there. Give ATI the low-end spot and give the performance spots to nVidia.

Hopefully Apple's experience on the new iMacs will make them think twice before going with ATI in the Mac Pro.

It is Wednesday night here in Australia. That means it is Tuesday in the US (you crazy people living in the past) Well there is no MBP update to be seen. Unless crazy :apple: decided to break tradition, there is no update for now.

The people at our purchasing department are hounding us

We got money to order 100 new mac pros to replace our powermac g5 workstations, but we aren't ordering until we can get better graphics, but our purchasing department wants us to spend the money ASAP. Apple, please hurry up(and nobody get mad at me because we are buying 100 ASAP possibly constraining the supply :p)

Can I have one of the old G5s?

End of year purchasing?

Does anyone know when the HP and Dell Harpertown workstations are SHIPPING?

EDIT: Mid-December. Assuming apple is not planning a major redesign, expect these machines to be announced very close to when they ship. No reason for Apple to kill current macpro sales while they wait for intel to ramp up supply.
