One good sign...the refurb store is full of mac-pro's , when I added a 2.66 to my cart a few days ago there was only two others, but now a total of 5 configs:D

Might not mean a single thing, but I think the biggest challange with tomorrows release date is Apple getting enough chips ahead of time, and the fact that there isn't a confirmed rumor of tomorrows release.

Eaither way i'm happy... i'm getting some kind of mac pro :)

How much?

if they don't release them soon that's going to be a lot of stuff on the january expo plate -no?:

iphone 3rd party developer's kit
slim notebook
updated screens?
updated mac pro?
....anything else?

I think apple should just institute a new policy of cutting prices on models that are going to be updated imminently (maybe 4-6weeks before) -that way no one feels pimped just prior to an upgrade.

How would this be a sign that new Mac Pros are imminent?

Maybe they'll just roll all the products into one. A high end phone that allows 3rd party applications that has a fold out 30" monitor and octo core xeons.

I could see them not making a big deal out of the 3rd party developer kit (making it a huge announcement could detract from their previous strategy). The slim notebooks have been rumored for... well years I believe. I do suspect they'll be released but... I don't think thats a for sure yet. And it makes sense to up the Mac Pro and the displays at the same time

Anyway, it seems more and more likely that the Mac Pro won't see new specs until January.

I love this topic because it will never be dated. There will always be a tomorrow. :D

Okay, I guess it will when they stop making Mac Pros.

Whoever thought that Apple would release a new machine within one week of the CPU being released, deserves to be disappointed.

Here the pic of the MPs in refurb store:

Thank you so much, but that isn't what I wanted to know and I have already seen that. Since there are multiple configs for 3ghz quad machines, it is very possible the one he bought is no longer on the store. Which is why I was asking how much to see which one he bought.

Thanks anyway

Yeah, um... didn't the first Mac Pros come out with chips that hadn't been released to any PC manufacturer yet? Yeah, correct me if I'm wrong, but Apple had exclusivity for a week or so there. Besides, the release date is for personal use. Distributors got their shipments a while ago.

If this doesn't happen tomorrow, it'll mean Januaryish. If it means Januaryish, that means I'll have to get a six + month old Penryn this summer instead of the Nehalem I wanted for college. They'd better be soon. Or maybe the Nehalems will come out at the sameish (late July/early August) time and I'll still get one. Seems devastatingly unlikely, but you never know...

What kind of FUD is this ^ ???

Do you think Apple and other OEM's wait until Intel releases new processors before they build machines around them???

Well I didn't pull the trigger quite yet...guess I shoulda mentioned I only saved the refurb in my cart for later. I don't think the 3ghz would be a very good value for me at this time so i'm going for a 2.66 refurb. If the refreshment comes tomorrow and the step up from 2.8 to 3ghz is only like $300 or so I will get that.

If I can get a decent resale on the 2.66 later when nehalem comes out I might sell and upgrade...the 7300GT is really the only thing bothering me, they can at least stick a $200 base quadro in their like dell.

All in all for med. heavy photoshop usage the 2.66 with 5 or 8 GB of ram and an extra 500gb drive will be plenty of horsepower.

so...how about the week after thanksgiving if we don't see anything this tomorrow ?:p

I highly doubt this. They'll probably be too busy shipping mass quantities of iPods and accessories to meet holiday demands.

Well as someone here in this thread said, the longer we wait, the bigger the release. I do hope that this long over due update will make :apple: make a substantial upgrade to the Mac Pro besides the new Intel chips otherwise it'd be a real bummer.

Here's the MAJOR things that need to be done to the Mac Pro other than just the new Xeon Chips:

1) PLEASE update the video cards: a) Nvidia 8800GT (the real bargain)
b) ATI 3800 (either 50 or 70 but anything is
better than the x1900xt at this rate.
c) Quadro (Nvidia just released new ones)

2) How's about allowing the Wester Digital Raptor or SCSI or SAS hard drives

3) Blu-Ray Burner

4) eSATA, unless FireWire has an answer to the upcoming USB 3.0

5) And this is a long shot but how's about the bottom of the line Mac Pro come with an Intel Xtreme Core 2 Quad (for the price we pay for, it'd be nice)

I am really considering buying a MacPro tomorrow, whether there's an update or not. Am I foolish to do so if nothing is updated tomorrow? I am sure I would be able to tell a huge difference in going from G4 Dual 800mhz to a Dual Dual-Core 2.66ghz. Making a jump that big would I really be able to tell the difference between the MacPro Woodcrest and the MacPro Penryn? I'm sure Penryn would cut my time in half encoding and stuff, just not sure what to do if there is nothing tomorrow. :(

It really depends on how much you absolutely need it now... but it seems like a bad time to buy, esp when the new processors just came out.

Wish lists like this baffle me. The only one I agree with is eSATA, for the simple reason that I want a high degree of FUTURE PROOFING from my top of the line macs. Until leopard came out you could easily argue that the entire G4 line wasn't obsolete (8 year old comps!!!). Obviously tech changes fast, and thats why i couldn't care less about the BTO options available at launch.

Lets see some PCIe 2.0 - that's WAY more important than whatever cards they offer upon release. And Blu-ray? Just go for a 3rd party option thats cheap. The whole point of a Mac Pro is that it's ridiculously easy to install those components.

With Hard Drives up to 1TB, I personally am completely done with physical formats. Cost per Gig is cheaper on drives now than any physical format, and a hell of a lot more convenient too.

The biggest concern I have about the upcoming Penryn Mac Pros is the RAM. On one hand, FB-DIMMs are dirt cheap now and so you can max out affordably, but this is the last gen before DDR3. So while it will be easy to get 16GB of RAM right away - you're never going to go above that. The 32GB options are extremely expensive and won't be around once DDR3 is standard. Considering you already get 4GB of RAM in laptops, it's not unreasonable to to expect to need more than 16GB a few years from now for pro apps and games.

If all we get is a Penryn upgrade with 2GB RAM and a few new graphics cards, I will be very disappointed.

And what are your thoughts on Apple announcing tomorrow? Is there any chance of it happening?

I haven't heard anything one way or the other. But it seems clear that the Mac Pros are overdue for an upgrade and there weren't any suitable processors to upgrade to until Monday's announcement by Intel.

There was talk that supply issues might be the current constraint, so I do think it's an any-day now sort of situation. I'm not sure if they'll bother waiting until MWSF, since it sounds like there are other plans in the works for that event (thin macbook rumors etc...)
