Remember that the Air is now effectively just the replacement for the old white MacBook. It is to the MacBook Pro what the iPad 2 is to the new iPad. There's room in the market for both.

Not so much. I would expect rather a 13" version of the next generation macbook pro, instead, before they look at overhauling the MBA's.

Retina 13" MBP is rumored for October. If that holds then the next MBA to support Retina would likely be summer 2013.

Many of the technical difficulties of handling these resolutions go away with Intel's graphic architecture in Haswell.

If Intel is on time with Haswell Apple will not be the only one shipping hiDPI displays in 2013.

I just bought my MBA 2012 couples of weeks ago and I don't think I will be going for the Retina version (probably coming out next year)

This is a blatantly false statement. iPad3 is the newest version of iPad2. Macbook air is a completely different product line, aimed at consumers who value battery life and portability. A more accurate metaphor would be comparing mba to the rumored mini ipad and the mbp to the fullsize one.

And a cheaper price.

Right... so anything that's cheaper is an older version of something?
Ipod nano : ipad2 as ipod touch : ipad 3?
I hear what you're saying, but price is where the similarities end. MBA isn't just an older mbp.
To rephrase,
the MacBook air has advantages besides price that the macbook pro doesn't share. The only reason you buy an Ipad2 instead of the new one is if you want to save cash and don't need the better one. The same doesn't apply to the Macbook airs and pros.
