The X is so blasted expensive to own and insure through Apple Care that I imagine my husband and I will no longer both be upgrading annually together, and especially not to top of the line flagships. We will probably go back to me taking his hand me downs, and me shifting my hand me downs to others in the family who need them. I don’t know how often my husband intends to upgrade. I’m not thrilled about that iPhone notch or Face ID, but you know I’m going to take that hand me down without complaints, because by then my 7 Plus will be around 2 years old and the X will feel fresh to me.

While it has been fun for everyone to get new iThings for Christmas and so forth, getting hand me downs is fine, too, so whatever. My Mother’s Day-combo Birthday Gift was my husband’s iPad Pro from last year. He added a new Apple Pencil and case to it and it seemed like new to me. I love it.

I know the kids and the many in-laws had fun getting brand new iPads and iPhones for gifts when we could afford to provide them with that. But nobody among us is spoiled or wasteful, so everyone will be fine and understand if it goes back to hand me downs. Everyone is supportive of my husband getting the newest goods because he works hard and is very generous making sure not just our immediate family, but our extended family is taken care of, too.

You're a smart consumer !

6plus to 6s plus was totally tangible
6s plus to 7Plus too but less so but I appreciated putting the prototype back look to rest with matte black and P3 screen/dual-ish speakers and dual cams

Couldn't justify 8 anything. Too incremental

The X feels fresh at least. Hopefully I can stay strong too, assuming I keep the X :p

This is why I voted 1 year. This is a big change in design and tech. There is potential for X2 to be a decent jump forward like 6s was over 6. Then diminishing returns after that. If faceID 2 comes soon and is much faster, or has wider angles, or has a smaller notch, then that could be a good reason to jump.

I'm half expecting X2 to mainly be a cost engineered version of X though, letmthe supply chain settle down

4 years hopefully, as my iPhone history to date is:

3GS (2009 - 2013)
5S (2013 - 2017)

So based on my track record, I should be keeping X until 2021, although I do admit that X is obviously the first generation of a new breed of iPhone, so not sure I will manage to last 4 years, as I expect we will see a far more refined version of X in the next couple of years

My wife and I plan to keep ours for 2 years, if Apple releases an S variant next year.

First generation users reap benefits !

Look at rMB and 2016 to 2017 rMBp same thing with redesign

Same with Apple Watch my S0 is slow but I use it for time and notifications and it looks like S3-LTE-less model

5s to a X?

:O

You are in for a show

I sometimes wish I didn’t feel the need to upgrade every year. I have a friend who’s upgrading from the 5S too, and I’m sort of jealous that she gets to have such a big leap. It would be fun to experience it all at once instead of incrementally.

Ah well, I take my fun elsewhere. :)

I really like my 7+

But the idea of skipping the 6-type body (7 and 8) all together and leap frogging onto the X would be so fun. Even to a non techie

Job well done for those folks. Bravo!

Depends on what new technology they introduce to their new phone next year. If it’s compelling enough I will go for it. If not, I will keep my current phone. Usually design changes are the biggest reasons for me.

5c -> 6 plus
I wanted that bigger screen badly.

6 plus -> 6s plus
only happened because I had my phone stolen; I didn’t feel the need to upgrade but might as well at that point.

6s plus -> 7 plus
I really wanted that matte black finish.

7 plus -> x
less bezel and smaller form factor, I was getting tired of plus iPhones’ big form factor but didn’t want to sacrifice camera and battery. This is the closest I’ll get for now. I have a feeling I’ll be keeping this phone for at least 2 years. Fingers crossed.

When I watched the keynote I was really underwhelmed by 8 and 8 plus. I had no plans upgrading to those at all. Then Apple pulled out x.

Most likely til next years bigger X phone with pencil support. At that point I’m probably good for awhile. Oled slightly bigger. Not seeing much I desire beyond that. Same with iPad. Waiting on oled. I wouldn’t blame anyone for sitting out this first gen iPhone X. That’s not me tho. By the time apps and accessories ramp up for it the next one will be on the rumor deck.

Given the nature of this forum, I suspect that many people are just compelled to have the newest phone.

I am not one of those people. I won’t replace my phone until I feel that a new one can offer something significant over the one I already have. That’s why I got a good three years out of my 6.
I bought the 6 Plus (upgrade from a 5s, 4s before that) because of the larger screen size. Made the mistake of trying the 6S in store and the speed improvement was enough to get me to trade out right there. Then the 7 Plus had a 256gb option and I always want as much storage as I can get... I also love the 2x lens on the 7 Plus. I’m the perfect customer I guess, and now iUP has just made it a little too easy to upgrade so why not? Yeah I’m a sucker for new tech. Stems from a long obsession with gadgets and portable audio starting with portable CD players :p

Pencil support would be rad on a 6.5” X Plus.

Kinda hoping pencil has a spot in iPhone to hold. Seems like that would need a specific design just for it. Or it’s kind of useless.

You mean like the Galaxy Note stylus? I can’t see Apple doing it. They might offer a case that might address a smaller pencil or something...

Can’t answer this poll because I have no idea. Newly retired so my upgrade days are over I’m betting. I don’t play the lottery so this will most likely be my last year to get excited over a new phone. It would be nice if I could qualify to get into the marketplace because next time I need a new phone I might be looking at older models. :)

I'm absurdly curious about 2018

I think XS or XII OR X2 or whatever you want to call it is a given. An S-cycle of the X.

Would they really abandon a design a year in?

But what will come of those big bezel classic iPhones? Will they be updated with
OLED ?

Or massive price drop to X size and co release a X plus? And make these the standard and only
New models?

But this would Price out so many people unless they just sold 8 series cheap and as the affordable option. Like how people are flocking to 7 for the savings rn
My take, iphone XS and iPhone XS Plus with upgraded internals.

At least 14 days (the end of the return period) in the hopes that it will seriously impress me.

Good point. Apple shouldn't count their blessings on these preorder sales until it's after the return policy and people have truly
Committed.

I always try to get 3 years out of my phones (unless someone/something happens that allows me to upgrade for super cheap, like the 7.)

Until something significantly worthwhile arrives. With something as fresh as the X, this might mean 2-3yrs.

Or next year if the X Plus comes out.
