Few people make some good points above I just don't see how it's mystifying as well. I'm at work 10-12 hrs and have the ability to play for almost all of it. Plugged to an outlet and on a desk. What's wrong with asking for a machine that can play games with decent frames? I can't exactly put my beastly desktop and 30" LCD in my backpack every morning.

I like to do stuff at work so I can come home and spend time with the family and not have the urge to destroy people in pvp (lol).
:)

Do you work as a game reviewer or something? If so, then I understand your needs somehow though I would expect that your employer would have bought a work computer for you. If gaming is not related to your job at all, then how on earth can you spend most of your work hours playing games? Makes no sense. Last time I checked, you get payed for doing work, not entertaining yourself. I'm jealous but still, I don't get it.

The majority of apples Customers dont understand computers too much, or the components inside... Most people would think of Sandy bridge as just a bridge with a lot of sand on it..... (bad joke, i know)

I would say due to their recent Quarter reports... no one :D

Lol no not a game designer or anything. I don't think it's really relevant to the topic but I'd say I'm pretty fortunate making six figures and doing what I do :)
although I will say getting here wasn't easy.

I am taking someone elses advice and will order another Aw on one of my parents cc so I can mail one back and then enjoy the other in te meantime apple makes a decision

This is exactly what I was going to say.

People who want laptops for gaming mystify me. If I ever want to do gaming I'll get a $400 desktop and use that.

Some of us enjoy playing games in the company of these things called friends and taking a desktop to a friend's house would be a huge hassle compared to taking a laptop.

Paystubs or ban

Well I would have if I had a laptop In front if me :p

My mistake, I assumed you were about to be a first time Mac user and were expecting Alienware-like hardware.

Computer gaming lost its appeal to consoles for me a long time ago, so that never factored in.

Troubleshooting and working on PC's for 20+ years factored in for me. I hate Windows, and while I love Ubuntu, I really love OS X.

[stop the madness] Other brands Sandy Bridge laptops aren't on shelves

Stop it.
Seriously, I see a thread named "how many customers is apple losing because of sandy bridge". Madness.
They aren't on shelves.
They are rare even online, especially outside US (i'm in Italy), and even in US they don't look readily available to me:

Plus, dual core sandybridge parts aren't even out.
Stop assuming the market is flooded with sandybridge laptops.
Let's say Apple releaese snb laptops in February, they'll be totally on par with the market or just slightly late.
Not saying they aren't slow to adopt new components at times.
But stop talking like I could walk out NOW and buy a snb laptop in a store. I can't. Most of the world can't.

Absolutely. These people are ridiculous. There are barely any Sandy Bridge laptops. The average consumer wouldn't have a clue what it even meant so Apple certainly aren't losing customers, and if they are it's only you lot, which lets face it, is completely insignificant.

Over the course of the year, and mostly during the first half of the year, the Mac lineup will transition to Sandy Bridge. Next year the lineup will transition to Ivy Bridge, then Haswell the following year, then Rockwell...

Home computer technology marches forward. This has been true since 1977 (and even before 1977 if you were a kit builder). Computers get better, and cheaper. I too have difficulty understanding why everyone worries that this has suddenly stopped for some reason. Short of a nuclear war I don't see the computer industry missing too many steps going forward.

The vast majority of Apples customers neither know, or care, about sandybridge.

Quite honestly I am totally bored with the subject but the tech-heads are like a dog with a bone over this.

Apple do annual updates as a general rule and SB will come to the Mac in due course and when it does the overwhelming majority of users will hardly notice.

Would I swap my mid 2010 for an SB MBP, hell no, not unless it comes with a whole lot of other changes or improvements.

For those who want/need the power then you will just have to wait (or buy a PC) I suspect the rest of us can just carry on with our current Macs quite happily for some time yet.

One of my favourite things about the Mac is getting out of the pointless spec-wars you get on the PC side.
Nothing goes out of date faster then "the latest and greatest CPU" so my 3 year upgrade cycles will continue for the foreseeable future as there is nothing on the immediate horizion (SB/USB 3/Lightpeak included) that would make me want to change earlier.

Just my opinion, your mileage may vary :)

im sorry but please tell me an example of a time where apple went with yearly cycles for the MBP ...

I`m not just referring to the change to unibody, I also mean C2D > i series cpu`s etc.
Ok, so maybe not annual exactly but they do seem to receive a mild update approximately once a year or so even if it`s just a minor speed bump.

That wasn`t exactly my point though, Apple updates when it feels it will make a worthwhile change to the machine (without affecting their profits or price points too much, of course).

In fact ,as I said before, the fact that I don`t have to chase the latest specs with a Mac is one of it`s advantages (to me at least).

So, go ahead and prove me wrong/flame me/whatever I don`t care.
Which, by coincidence, is just how I feel about Sandybridge at this point.

Also, it's not like Apple can update to sandybridge in the US and keep selling arrandales in southern europe for months. It's unfair. Macs on the online store are always updated all at once.
Well that's basically what Dell is doing: on the italian Dell online store, the M17x still use only clarksfield quads, no way to configure snb quads. Same for asus and the others, they start selling new parts in taiwan/US/etc and keep selling "lightyears behind" laptops worldwide. That's also a reason for Apple to wait for wide (millions) availability of parts.

I agree with the OP, the dual cores are not even announced yet and the haters are already pouncing on Apple. Still, I am curious as to what difference the dual core SB will bring when compared to arrandale. If it is relatively marginal like santa rosa to penryn or from penryn to arrandale (I think thats the right order), I will keep my arrandale. Whats making me nervous however, is Anand's review which seems to suggest that SB will blow everything else out of the water!

Madness?

I need to purchase two laptops for two employees that will start in 10 days.

I was thinking of buying a mac book pro with i5 or so processor.

But seeing that there is SB laptops (pc), I am at dilemma as to what I should purchase for them.

I don't want them sitting around the office, chatting and etc, wasting their precious time. And I want them to be productive in all fronts.

To us, developers, more responsive, faster compiling machines means more work can be done.

At this point, I am thinking of purchasing the pc laptops.

Does anyone know where I can make a purchase SB laptops that can be shipped by Feb 3rd?

BTW, desktop is not a solution as we are constantly pushed to work more than 10+ hours a day, and they need to be mobile.

Apple has no history of Mac users jumping to PC ... compared to PC users discovering Apple in droves ... I personally have never met a Mac owner that decided to switch to a PC ... ever.

Really? I know quite a few.

I could understand the OP's frustration. I have the current 13-inch MBP, and it's a great little machine. But, let's face the facts. The Intel processor is two evolutions old and Apple is still pricing it at $1200. Shrewd business move, since I presume the 13-inch model is their best seller but a punch in the gut to the more discerning Apple aficionados. Not to mention, even outside of portability, the Air is a superior performer to the 13-inch MBP. Their smallest "professional" notebook is in need of a refresh, and apparently its big brothers are too.
