"Unfortunate time"? You say that like things will turn around and phones will get smaller. The market has spoken. People(not me) want bigger phones. The bigger phones sell more.

Smartphones were smaller in the beginning because they were transitioning from the older dumb phones where, generally, smaller meant better. Now, for many, their phone is their all-in-one device. It's their smartphone, computer, and tablet and they don't want that in a small-screened device.

I understand that there are people that still want smaller iPhone 5 sized devices but I'm afraid those people are left out in the cold. iPhone sales skyrocketed for Apple when the "bigger" iPhone 6 and 6 Plus launched. The numbers don't lie for Apple. They're putting their shareholder's money where the money is. It's just the way it is.
Yes, unfortunate time. I make no claims about what the distant future will bring. No one can. Although, it’s possible in the near future, AR glasses will appease many large and small phone users alike.
As for the rest of your post, no disagreement here. You stated only the agreeable objective facts. Had you posted that originally I would have had nothing to debate.

Me, as of whenver the UPS guy gets here. I'm coming from an iPhone 8, and pretty psyched for the smaller footprint and better camera and display. Less psyched about moving from TouchID to FaceID but I'll try to keep an open mind.

Me too, after today when the TNT guy comes. I’m moving from an SE2020 which I liked but I didnt like the size. I’d still be using a first gen SE were it not for the fact that one item of software I need (LibreLink) is not compatible with it. I had to upgrade whether I wanted to, or not. But I did that to a 7. I got the SE before I realised that the Mini was coming. Should have waited.

I am giving the mini another try. It arrives tomorrow. I love my 2020 SE due to the one handed usage and Touch ID however I do prefer the overall footprint of the mini plus the better camera and screen and slightly better battery. I just wish it had under screen Touch ID. I returned the mini the day I got it (November) due to my dislike for Face ID during these days of constant face mask wearing. However I am working from home now so I figure I will not be as frustrated with Face ID as I was when I was still at the office in November. I hope the 13 Mini (assuming there will be one) will have the under screen Touch ID. You never know?

Under screen touch ID could be enough to make me upgrade again next year, even though its a financial hassle for me. I’ve avoided faceID entirely until now. I must have small hands, can’t use my SE2020 one handed most of the time. Certainly not for using the on screen keyboard, thumb wont reach other side of the screen. Then again, arthritic fingers. oh well.

Got mine yesterday. It didn't feel quite as tiny as I'd imagined, but it'd definitely very handle-able. The camera bump is super noticable when you set it down, but I imagine the case I have coming (Apple, the leather one) will offset that. I thought FaceID would annoy me, but so far it's pretty seamless. The phone just always seems to be unlocked when I need it to be.

edit: I hadn't factored in masks, which (and I know this is news to nobody) absolutely suck with FaceID. I had to revert to a 4-number PIN just to make it less terrible to unlock it.

I removed authentication completely - no FaceID, nor PIN. The only feature this disables is Wallet, which I didn't use anyway. Yes, it is a security risk if stolen but I've yet to have a cell phone stolen (I did lose a pre-iPhone cell on a beach once) and my lifestyle makes that very unlikely. Nor do I have anything on my iPhone that lends itself to a financial or personal loss. I do miss seeing FaceID working, but that is just fun, not functional.

I'm right there with ya.

My first iPhone was a 6s which I loved. I missed out on the square design of old in a small form factor. When I heard they were bringing back the square design in the iPhone 12 I was very excited that I would get a chance to try that classic design myself. The moment I read about the Mini I knew that was the phone for me. I have always hated big phones because I have broken a few phones in my pocket due to their large form factor. Took awhile but I finally got my hands on a black 12 Mini with 256gb. All I can say is it far surpassed my expectations. I see a lot of people talk about how it failed along with people that didn't care for it until they tried it. I think in time it will become more popular as more people give it a try. As long as they make the Mini and it's getting system updates I will have one.

I find it interesting that some still hold on to this line of thinking. You realize the man that touted this "feature" has been dead for almost 10 years. Time moves on. Things change and evolve. Good luck trying to find a phone that suits your thumb reach criteria.
What a ridiculous proposition. As if the usability of my phone or my preference in reaching four corners is in any way influenced by whether a particular person is above or below the grass – sorry, I just have small hands and like to not use both just for interacting with my phone.

Besides, I am content with a 4" display because it is all I need to read my mails, browse the web, flick through my music albums, show memes to my imaginary friends or send a text to my mom. I have other devices for productivity and entertainment that – for me – are even better at those use cases than a larger smartphone would be.

Yes, I realise I am part of a very small niche. I can understand why someone would want a tablet-sized phone to work on a Numbers spreadsheet on the train or to watch TV shows while on the throne. Their preference is valid. Mine is, too.

You’ll have to pry my SE from my cold, dead hand. ;)

Mini in black here. I love it. Brings back the 5s feel for me... which was by far my favorite phone to date (design and size). After using this phone since launch, I have to say, my wife’s 12 feels bulky lol. I love the mini. I hate it didn’t take off like apple thought it would. I feel after the 12s mini or 13 mini it’ll be gone. Unless they use it in the future for SE variants

Don't worry, I am confident that the new trend will be AR headsets/glasses + small computing devices to drive them, probably even smaller that the current Mini. Large phones are not practical, and they will not last.

I think large phones for the general public are like everything else in the world in that they will go through their trends.

The past 5 years large display phones have been all the rage because it has been somewhat of a new tech. Before phones were quite small. We'll go through another flip where people get tired of the weight and cumbersomeness of what having a large display phone actually means in real life usage and we'll start to see the industry pump out some pretty cool mini devices.

There will always be a place for large phones. Social media ninja's will always prefer large screens but I think for the general user the fatigue of large screens has already set in. I think the mini would have been a run away success if it were $100 cheaper. The price is just too high. My opinion though.

I would also add the battery life. Yes, I know that we can charge our phones and right now it is relatively fast but those batteries have defined lifespan. The better the battery life, the longer you can keep your phone. When it comes to such prices, longevity matters for me. Otherwise I would like to have the smallest phone possible as I am all about portability.
