If you'd have read my entire post, I admitted that the problem was trivial and may or may not effect me. But I can't, in good conscience, purchase a product that is known to be defective regardless of the severity of the defect. Again, it has more to do with perceived inferiority and resale value.

but it isnt defective.....it works the same any other phone does......my wife's nokia n95 does the same thing when u grip it....bars go down....so did my old samsung......they all do it......wake up and get over it.....just buy it and if u have severe problems take it back......i really cant see apple changing the design until their next iphone.

It's too late. I don't want to be anxious all the time about this antenna issue.

Cars get recalled for having 2% failure rates on things like brakes.

lol my point was if the internet didnt exist then i really doubt most ppl would even realise that there was anything wrong with it.....cos there isnt......the media has blown it so over the top its untrue.....and the more ppl talk the more it gets exaggerated.........would u return ur car even tho were was absolutely nothing wrong with it just cos a minority few on a forum moaned about it in some way? or would u trust your own judgement and realise theres nothing wrong with yours and keep it?

No phone I've ever used or owned loses signal integrity when you touch it in a certain place. Whether or not this drops calls or inhibits data transfer is irrelevant. If it isn't a defect, it is clearly a design flaw. Phones are meant to be held. SJ did a great job of blurring the lines between a "death grip" and the simple act of gently placing your skin on the problem area. This isn't a problem that "every mobile phone has" or else you'd be seeing youtube videos of other phones losing signal strength just by touching them in a specific area... and that isn't the case. Where there's smoke, there's fire, and there's plenty of smoke surrounding the iP4 antenna. This isn't a media fabrication or an over exaggeration.

uh...did u even see the press conference??? they clearly showed 3 other new phones doing the same thing....and i'm pretty sure they aint making it up since they would be sued to hell!!! add to that the n95 8 gig and the samsung i8910 cos i had both of them and they both did it too....and u have 5 phones already AT LEAST that do the same damn thing.....but because this is the fastest selling phone in history......obviously more ppl are noticing it now!

I waited to see how things played out and the Apple response but ultimately I just ordered mine. It's clearly the best and while waiting I found about 10 people in my area that were early adopters and they all love it and none have problems. I have held them all and "death gripped" them all and yet to find an issue. Must live in a great AT&T area.

This is exactly what I mean when I say:

Other phones lose signal integrity when you perform a "death grip". The iP4 loses signal integrity just by touching a certain spot. There is a clear distinction, a distinction not made by Apple or SJ. That press conference was brilliantly calculated...

Q: Why the September 30th deadline for free cases?
A: Steve: It's so we can re-evaluate. We don't know what solutions may come up by then.

Q: Regarding free case offer, will it extend outside U.S., and will it be extended past September 30th?
A: Steve: Yes, and we'll evaluate things as far as any possible extension.

From Jobs himself. They are going to re-evaluate things come September 30th. For those who say there won't be a fix are those who currently own an iPhone 4 that will have buyers remorse when the "fixed" iPhone 4 is available.

If free cases appeases the vocal minority, then Jobs would have extended the free case offer for the life of the iPhone 4 until the iPhone 5, not just till the end of the fiscal quarter for Apple.

Something is definitely in the works.

Hmm I did want to see how it panned out but my real reason for holding back is I want a white one. I rarely make calls so it doesn't bother me.

well as i said, i dont live in a particularly strong area.....mine is resting on the table now and i have 3 bars......i hold it in the death grip for like 2 minutes and it went down 1 bar within the first 10 seconds then nothing....stayed on 2.....and the calls are crystal clear as u can get on a mobile. As i said....ppl who are holding out it is their loss and quite frankly it doesnt bother me in the slightest, i just find it quite funny that the whole world is so paranoid about it.

In my view they have simply given a date of september just in case there is something they can release that will be cheaper for them to fix it than giving out $29 bumpers for free......i cant believe for a minute they will redesign the iphone 4 just to appease like 2% of buyers. They will most likely change it for their next phone release, iphone 5 or whatever u wanna call it. Hold out for that if u want but i wouldnt hold ur breathe on this one changing.

Absolutely. Like I said, the issue probably wouldn't bother me that much. But I still think it's silly (for me, personally) to not just wait until they fix it. That way I won't even have to think about it.

I cant see them "fixing it" in all honestly....dont know what they can do......good luck tho.

It's foolish to think that Apple doesn't care about CR's non-recommendation. They know that a lot of people take it seriously, it gets plenty of news coverage, so they will do what they can to appease them. This means a permanent fix through some sort of redesign or revision. It's not just "2% of buyers" when you consider intangibles like lost sales, public perception, and legacy.

I'm a chemical engineer by trade... there are plenty of transparent polymers they can coat the antennae with to insulate them from skin contact. This is a cheap, simple production revision that I would be satisfied with.

couldnt u do that urself then and buy one now?

After the press conference on Friday, I am going to get one. Watching Jobs duplicate the same thing with other phones confirmed what I suspected. I figure I'll have 30 days to return it if I end up not liking it.

Despite the sales figures, nobody wants to deal with questionable public perception and unfavorable reviews from one of the most respected product review agencies. So even if a revision will cost Apple money in the short-term, it's something they have to do.

No, I couldn't do that myself.

Here's the problem that this forum has... and it shows that Steve and his PR team actually achieved what they set out to do. Everyone knows if you grip a cell phone, you increase attenuation and lose some signal strength. THAT isn't what we are talking about for the iPhone 4. We're talking about your flesh contacting a specific spot on the phone, without even death gripping or any type of gripping at all.

The problem is you can get the same kind of "grip attenuation" with the iPhone 4 by just touching a certain spot... With the iPhone being such a versatile device (landscape, gyro, gps maps), it's a little disconcerting knowing there's a spot you have to avoid while moving the phone around to different orientations. This was never an issue with other iPhones.

And they CAN fix it... I know they can. I've linked this article a few times already, but take a few minutes to ready it.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/3821/iphone-4-redux-analyzing-apples-ios-41-signal-fix/3

A small, 2mil thick insulation layer is enough to drop the attenuation by almost HALF. That's huge in terms of RF signals.

I trusted Apple and pre-ordered mine. I've always enjoyed Apple quality. This time it was an unforeseeable mistake to trust them based on track record. I will never trust Apple again.

I ordered one for my wife and so far have no regrets, at least towards the antenna. The proximity sensor is a bigger headache. The antenna works fine, no dropped calls, no death grip issues.

Overall she's pretty pleased with the phone.
