Here's the problem that this forum has... and it shows that Steve and his PR team actually achieved what they set out to do. Everyone knows if you grip a cell phone, you increase attenuation and lose some signal strength. THAT isn't what we are talking about for the iPhone 4. We're talking about your flesh contacting a specific spot on the phone, without even death gripping or any type of gripping at all.

This is precisely what I was alluding to when I mentioned that SJ had effectively blurred the lines between a death grip and a mild touch. All I'm hearing is "see, it's ok, it happens to other phones!" when in reality, no other phone loses signal strength just by touching it in a certain area. Bravo, SJ et al.

The article you linked also reaffirms my assumption that all they have to do is coat the antennae with something. We aren't asking for visual design changes. We aren't asking for a new antenna design. Just put something on the antenna so it is protected from skin contact and I'll buy the damn thing.

Personally,

I've held off buying one not because of the antenna issues, but because I was waiting for Steve to confront/address/recognize the issue. That being said, I now am seeking to buy one, but am now just waiting until the demand dies down so I can buy one at the Apple Store or one of our larger AT&T retail stores. I've always had a better experience buying something relatively expensive in-person rather than online- if I have the option.

The antenna problem really does not bug me at all, and that's because I know I would have bought a case regardless of whether or not it had the reception issues. The way I see it is like this; I have a second generation iPod Touch, after getting a refurbished model I decided I would buy a case along with it to keep it in good cosmetic condition. That same case has been on it for a year now. Now LET'S SAY this same situation was going on with the iPod, and for whatever reason the wifi would stop working when a particular part of the iPod was touched, and the only way to fix it would be to have a case on it. Sure, it would bug me knowing that there is that issue with the device, but since I would have a case on it and not receive problems then it really doesn't matter to me at all because I will never use my iPod without a case now and the same goes for the iPhone.

Obviously, this is just the way I see it. I am not looking for anyone to agree with me, I just think it makes sense to keep something so fragile in a case. Especially when you're looking at another $200 to replace the screen if you drop it and break it.

That's my 2 cents, take it for what it's worth to you.

Note: I am waiting for this proposed software update that addresses the proximity sensor issues- that would REALLY REALLY bug me.

couldnt u just get a free bumper???

I don't want to use a bumper. I really like the looks of the naked iP4 so I'd rather wait until they put a clear coating on the stainless band. That way it will look the same, but function properly.

wow u must be pretty rich to not want to protect it at all....i personally think the black bumper on the black iphone looks awesome, and it's good protection, i have no scratches....and obviously it helps with reception.

You don't have to be rich... Its a calculated risk. I also like the look of the naked iPhone and I will use it that way the majority of the time, but i will sometimes use a case if the situation dictates it.

I'm glad you like the bumpers, but I think we can both agree that you shouldn't be required to use one.

I am backing off for a while

At first I am so eager about pre ordering but with all the antenna issues, I decided to hold my purchase and wait slightly longer. I admit the phone is beautiful and so far no other phone look like it but saying that, i also want he phone works properly...

I will pay a visit to local apple store once the black and white version come out and have a look at it. Most probably I will revise my decision by October and see whether there are any permanent solutions to the antenaa.

In my view they have simply given a date of september just in case there is something they can release that will be cheaper for them to fix it than giving out $29 bumpers for free......i cant believe for a minute they will redesign the iphone 4 just to appease like 2% of buyers. They will most likely change it for their next phone release, iphone 5 or whatever u wanna call it. Hold out for that if u want but i wouldnt hold ur breathe on this one changing.

Yeah there is no hidden meaning or agenda in Apple's deadline. It is simply reasonable to set a deadline when doing anything like that and then re-evaute things in the future. Like the said someone might make a cool band-aid everyone wants and it might be cheaper and they might do that.

Anyone who reads any more into that deadline than that is simply dreaming. Given how people always mis-read, miscontrue and mis-understand what Apple says, though, I guess it does not matter.

Apple flat out came out and said weeks ago this was not an issue or a problem, and scores of people still kept saying they were waiting to see what Apple was going to do about it.

I've held off buying one mainly due to the antenna issue... I'm going to stick to my 3gs for a little longer. No issues with my 3gs, I love it!

What did you hear during the press conference that won you over?

Perhaps just hearing him address the issue was enough for some people (given Apple's track record). And if you were planning on using a bumper/case anyway, then maybe the antenna is of no concern in the first place.

The numbers on dropped calls and returns. The demo on how other phones have the same thing. If it was half as bad as people claim the problem is, more would be returned.

The 4 is supposed to be much better at grabbing a signal than the 3GS. So I don't really care if there is a chance if I hold the phone in a certain way the call will drop. There's a good chance my 3GS wouldn't even be able to make that same call in the first place. If I'm in a place with a spotty signal, I'll watch where I put my hand. The other 99.9% of the time I will use it like I normally would and I bet it will work fine.

I won't put a bumper case on it. They're ugly IMO. It will either be naked of have one of these on it:

I was a holdout until today. So the presser had made me feel better about the Apple Attitude, and a few friends and acquaintances had 4's that had only minor antenna issues - hardly reproducible. Then on a whim, I stopped at a Walmart today and found a single, solitary 16GB lurking. I snatched it up and have been playing with it all day. Long story short, it's an iPhone. The display is nicer than its predecessors. I can make the "grip of death" work if I try hard enough. The prox sensor seems fine. No colored spots or other problems so far. It doesn't seem spectacularly different from my 3GS, although the camera does take nicer pix. So I can't fully agree with either the doomcriers or the uber-enthusiasts. But for all you holdouts, my experience says if you live in an area with decent signal, chances are decent that you'll be fine with iPhone 4.

Just thought I'd throw in an update. I noticed yesterday at work, where the available 3G signal is weaker than it is at home, that I can hold the naked phone in my right hand, using what I'd call a normal grip, and watch signal bars drop and web sites stop in the process of loading. If I remove my pinky from the join, the web sites immediately resume loading and the signal strength bars increase. I sat there and did this over and over, using different web sites and clearing the browser cache regularly. I was even able to keep my finger on the join long enough to cause the iPhone to display "Safari was unable to load the web page because it is not connected to the Internet...", etc. Lift the pinky, hit refresh, site loads. I cannot make this happen at home, and if I use a case, I can't make it happen anywhere. My conclusion, as an amplification of what has been said many times before: Under the right signal circumstances, the "death grip" can consist of simply covering the lower left side antenna join. iPhone 4 has a definite antenna problem, and I'd bet money that it affects every single one of them. Some people just have not seen it yet. Use a case, no problem.

Well even if Apple can prove(?) the 1 more dropped call than the 3GS it ain't happening in the real world. My wife has the 3GS and I have the IP4. For over a week now I have had 9 dropped calls >3 mins in lenght and she has had none...... it the same location sitting next to each other. SJ really manipulated the numbers on Friday. My wife will not upgrade until this mess is sorted out, including the proxmimty sensor issues.

Great post.

Returning, holding out.

I got my iP4 from the second batch in the beginning of July and can't stand the death grip problems. Seems like it's an issue when it's in your pocket too. I'll switch back to the iPhone 3G for a few months because I think there's something fishy about the September cut off. A silent fix will be applied.

Like I said in another thread, I see MASSIVE returns coming in the next 2 weeks. IP4 is a disaster born of unbridled arrogance. Luckily for Apple they'll survive it because the Macs are great and the iPad is a smash.

Doubt it.

Know a few folks with iPhone 4's. None have the antenna issue. All seem very happy with their iPhone 4. My guess is that there many satisfied customers and this just affects a few customers.

I'll buy one eventually, but not until they fix this glaring problem. I use my 3GS for its video, still, and management functions as much as the phone but still in the end, it's a phone and must function as one. I just can't accept easily dropped calls because it's amazing in other ways.

And no, I'm not going to put a case on it. I don't buy phones to wrap them up in bigger objects, making the size and weight of my front pocket even worse. I just don't drop them. Problem solved. To HAVE to put a case on it so it works defeats the purpose of the phone, sans extra junk added to it.

I'm holding off for now, but not sure for how long. My 3G is giving me more and more problems each day.

The more I read about AT&T, it's only bad stuff. At this point I don't think I'd even get a flawless IP4 on that network. I'll hold out for either a EVO 4G on Sprint or whenever the first Gingerbread phone comes available to Verizon.

Note to Apple - get your damn phone on Verizon!

Where have you been reading about AT&T? lots of people on these boards have no problems with AT&T myself included. One thing to note is that on the internet for every one person that logs onto a site to praise a company, 50 log in to complain.
