Obviously, this is just the way I see it. I am not looking for anyone to agree with me, I just think it makes sense to keep something so fragile in a case. Especially when you're looking at another $200 to replace the screen if you drop it and break it.

That's my 2 cents, take it for what it's worth to you.

Note: I am waiting for this proposed software update that addresses the proximity sensor issues- that would REALLY REALLY bug me.

Well according to :apple: fantrolls 99.5% of IP4 users have NO issues whatsoever and you should just return it or not buy it.

See you at the iphone 5 launch

Nah, you won't see me there. After this launch debacle, no way I would buy a new iPhone on the release day. A good month of waiting out new Apple products seems about right, so problems can be exposed and fixed (or possibly not, in this case?).

But I'm also someone who wasn't interested in buying an iPhone until it met what I consider essentials for a phone that doubles as a personal pocket computer (copy and paste, MMS, and video recording). So I held off on buying one until the 3GS came around.

Doubt it.

Know a few folks with iPhone 4's. None have the antenna issue. All seem very happy with their iPhone 4. My guess is that there many satisfied customers and this just affects a few customers.

And I know 6 people (myself included) have the antenna and proximity sensor issue and are going to return it. And 2 of my friends live in different large cities where AT&T coverage is very good.

sweet, more people that dont want it, the more chances i have of getting one.

its funny all the people say there not going to buy one are making a statement to apple or something, in reality it will not make a difference because your less then %1 of the millions buying them.

not buying the iphone 4 because of a "antenna" issue your only loosing out on new technology.

+1

The Antenna Song pretty much sums it up. If you don't want it, don't get it. If you got it and don't like it, bring it back. Everybody wins. No one is being forced to use an iPhone 4.

I think there's something exciting about owning such a controversial and divisive piece of technology. LOL.

That is what Apple wants you to believe. It's probably as high as 20%. Who would admit that?

huh....i see wayy more interest in purchasing that people complaining, its certainly not 20%, everyone i have talked to in person love there ip4, its just the fake complainers on the forums (who most likely dont even own them) that are the one's complaining.

wow u must be pretty rich to not want to protect it at all....i personally think the black bumper on the black iphone looks awesome, and it's good protection, i have no scratches....and obviously it helps with reception.

Isn't it something like $200 at the Apple store to replace a damaged/broken phone? When my home button on my 3G quit working in May, Apple gave me another new phone just like mine for $200 and no contract extension. $200 wasn't fun to pay but I didn't feel like I would be classified as rich having $200 available for a brand new iPhone.

Well even if Apple can prove(?) the 1 more dropped call than the 3GS it ain't happening in the real world. My wife has the 3GS and I have the IP4. For over a week now I have had 9 dropped calls >3 mins in lenght and she has had none...... it the same location sitting next to each other. SJ really manipulated the numbers on Friday. My wife will not upgrade until this mess is sorted out, including the proxmimty sensor issues.
Why haven't you returned the phone then? Or have you?

There's no way it's that high. Look at the posts here. Countless people complaining how much they hate the thing. Many fewer stories of returns.

This is like the iPad WiFi "issues" IMO. Some facts, mostly BS by people though.

held off

We held off buying THREE more iphone 4 till this was resolved. Will most likely buy a white one, for one of the gang who needs a new phone now and will just use it with a case as they always do. but 3/4 (I will return mine this week) will NOT be purchased till a 1.1 comes out.

Okay, so 20% of 3 million is 600,000. Don't think so.

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

What did you hear during the press conference that won you over?

Jobs and what he said had nothing to do with "winning me over". As I said, I was just waiting for them (Apple) to simply address that there was an issue, I've been planning on buying one, since the day it was released and before we knew there would be problems.

Edit: Seems someone has already answered my question!

Perhaps just hearing him address the issue was enough for some people (given Apple's track record). And if you were planning on using a bumper/case anyway, then maybe the antenna is of no concern in the first place.

I was looking forward to upgrading from my 3G, which would have been perfect timing since my two-year contract is about to end. But I will not be buying the iPhone 4 due to the reception issue. Like a few others have said, it's partly out of principle. I hold Apple to a higher standard — both in terms of the design flaw, and the way they've handled the whole issue. Sure, my vote is one tiny drop in an ocean, but so it is with voting in national elections or shopping ethically.

I'm not switching platforms though. I love iOS enough to stay faithful and wait patiently for iPhone 5.

I've had 3 iphone 4's... The first 2 were replaced because of bad battery life... turns out.. my gmail account was being hacked some kind of way and kept causing my mail app to crash.. changed gmail password, havent had problems since.. But I've NEVER HAD THE ANTENNA ISSUE.. and i am left handed.. so...

I've been having the proximity sensor issue since the beginning, but I've never noticed the antenna issue because I have a case on it.

So I thought I'd check to see how MUCH degradation in signal there was, and not just with the bars, but with call quality and internet speed.

So I took the bottom part of the case off and did a speed test. First, without touching it. Good to go. 4 bars. Decent speed. Then I held it with my hand bridging the "gap." Speed test completely failed. Signal dropped to 1 bar.

So I hopped on Safari. Tried to load a page with the "death grip." No loading, nothing. Dead. I let go and immediately it sprang into action.

Then I called my home phone and listened as I talked into the iPhone. Crystal clear, sounded amazing. Then I bridged the tap. Without the slightest delay the audio disappeared. The effect of touching and releasing is immediate and complete.

My signal here in my office is 4 bars. I was completely floored by this little test. I was skeptical that the problem was so severe. Now I am completely and totally shocked that Apple let this phone out the door.

Having said that, I'm putting the case back on and using it happily. (except for the prox. sensor issue) But to know that I couldn't use this phone without a case is kind of disheartening...

I like this post.
Its not one or the other. Its both.
Its defective (everything is in some way), and I'm keeping mine.
There are work arounds.

Is it the best of times or the worst of times?
Its both at the same time.

I am probably in the small minority of customers who want to thank Apple for saving me money.

I was caught in the early hoopla before the iPhone4 launch, I was a part of the "I HAVE TO HAVE ONE!" crowd. That said, I must be getting old, because I've found that I have become a lot more patient in life as the years go by. Being an early adopter since the first iPhone, I remembered the plethora of issues surrounding each launch. Thus, I decided to wait a month before placing my order, something I've never done before, doctor will you check my temperature?

Now that everything has come to light, I really have no desire to upgrade to the 4 over my 3GS. I'll wait until this time next summer, and see what Apple has in store for us then.

this is part, but not ALL....at least for me....im waiting for confirmation of Jailbreak also.

There are a # of things that put me off from iPhone/iOS at the moment:

* only allows apps that Steve Jobs approves of. No adult/Rated-R material.
* no Swype
* no slot for microSD expansion
* no removable battery

I held off until today. Well I missed the pre-order but we didn't know then about the problems. In either case, I have the 3G, and I just can't imagine switching to anything else. I love my iPhone (and I already get crappy signal due to my apartment building, so reception's nothing new). Plus I figure I can use my earphones/microphone if I really need to.

As can be seen clearly in this video, just in case anyone doesn't believe you…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TclSVCPzEs&feature=player_embedded

PS. The video is trying to sell a case, but for me it's enough to forgo buying the phone altogether. This is not normal attenuation as Apple claims, but 'detuning due to capacitance added by the hand making galvanic contact with the stainless steel' as discussed by Anandtech in this article. Hard to believe there are still people trying to argue that it's not a design flaw.

Exactly. If I had a problem with the antenna on the iPhone 4 and there was this huge media spotlight on this issue, why would I ever call it in? Think about it. I'm sure there were a lot of iPhone 4 buyers with the antenna detuning issues, but what's the point of spending the time and energy calling AppleCare when the problem is so well known and widespread, that everyone and their mother knows about it? I know that I would never have called AppleCare even if I DID have the antenna issue, just because I would figure they would know by now, with it being on every tech blog and news channel on the planet. SJ's numbers are BS and he's using the Apple PR to spin it, and apparently it's working.
