Pretty much this. Best way to get profit resale value as well if you have updates lined up.

I never thought of this. What a great idea.

If I get the 5S unlocked, I can sell it next year for a decent amount, and probably only pay $200 or less to upgrade. It's like subsidized pricing, without the contract/high fees and I can keep my prepaid rate.

Mind blown  lol

Until Sprint got the iPhone, I'd never made it to a full year with any phone….now I do, because Apple usually takes that long to release the new one…

And no, I've no interest in keeping a phone for any particularly long duration of time. I like new tech toys and as long as it's possible, I'll continue to upgrade when they release the new one…

Hell, I don't expect my teenager to keep his phones for more than a year, anymore. LOL

I stick to a low cost SIM only contract & pay full price for the handset, thus cannot really justify changing my phone every 1-2 years.

My 3GS finally went into retirement last week after 4 years - it served me well, but was starting to show it's age. Loving my new 5S & hope it will serve me as long as the 3GS did. If so, my next phone will be the iPhone 7S

Or better yet, if you have an iPhone 5 and have a update lined up, buy the 5S at $199 and sell for $600 if you don't think the 5S isn't worth the upgrade.

I get a new iPhone every 2 years. I had a 4S before my 5S. However, since I was waiting for the 6, and originally planning on keeping my 4S, I'm changing it up. I plan on selling my 5S a month or so before next launch in order to get the 6.

3 years with the same phone isn't bad, but anything more and I don't think I could do it.

Most people doing the upgrade all either have an upgrade, in family plan to transfer upgrade, or apple fanboys with too much money to blow.

The original iPhone and now this year's 5s are the only iPhones that I did not purchase. I broke my tradition of upgrading every year. This time I'll ride out my contract, but that makes me all the more excited for iPhone 6 :D

I've had every generations of iPhone since it first came out, and do not foresee not upgrading next year. I got extra money by selling old one and buying a new one, than keeping them. Seems like the only logical solutions - for me. :)

Im just wondering if everyone on this board is up to date with tech and lastest and greatest or more for longevity out of a iPhone 5s (growing attacthment to it). I hope to keep the 5s for as long as technology allows me to, thats why I spent out of contract $$$ for this phone and also like the 4'' screen. I dont want a bigger screen the 4" coming from an Android phone (Droid Rzr Maxx HD) so I invested my money into what I think is perfect phone for me for the time being. What are your guys thoughts.
5 years ? Insane ...
I don't know about the battery after 3-4 yrs .....
I think 3 years is the maximum we should expect from an iPhone

Why keep the 5S for 3-5 years when there'll be a 6 to get in 1 year?

Dont want a bigger screen and I assume there might be one. I absolutley do not want to go bigger then a 4'' screen I came from a bigger phone and hate it. Like the one hand operation

I will admit that I am an apple fanboy. I kept my iPhone 4 for 3 years and now i have an iPhone 5s. Pending i take care of this badboy... it should last me at least 2 years if not more... and It all depends with what technology is out there to keep me satisfied.

Exactly this for me. Hoping to get my 5S this week and then I'm selling my old 4 to my friend as she's sick of her HTC that's not even a year old. Apple products might be expensive but at least they last. Can't see myself wanting a bigger screen when/if one comes along as it's taken a year for the 4 inch screen to grow on me. Any bigger and I don't think it'll be comfortable to use in one hand, which is important to me.

I'm a total gadget junkie and am on T-Mobile's "Jump" plan, and intend to use it regularly every six months. I'm rather ecumenical in the OS wars, finding positives with iOS, Android, and Windows Phones. I've owned phones of all 3 types and who knows what'll be my main phone when I get something 6 months from now.

Most likely I'll trade in for the latest and greatest Android and/or Windows Phone, and then in another 6 months when the iPhone 6 comes out, IF it has a larger screen, then that will most likely be my next phone after that! :p

I have purchased every iPhone on launch day and I don't plan on changing anytime soon.

I'm getting my 5s on a 3 year contract...

That being said, I got my current 3Gs on a 3 year contract 2 years ago, but decided that I didn't want to wait another year before upgrading, so I opted to pay the required fees to do so early.

However, when I started that contract, the 4s was about to come out, so the 3Gs was already almost 2 generations behind. You can tell I'm not the type who cares about having the latest device all the time. Since I'm starting this contract with the latest model, there's a good chance that I will stick out the full 3 years. It's very unlikely that the 5s won't still be able to meet my needs 3 years from now.

I believe in getting you money's worth when I invest in a device. Buying a new one every year is unnecessary.

Keeping for 5 years is like using a second generation Iphone 3G from 2008.

Except at this point it's fast enough for almost everyone
I know someone with a 4s who is going to keep it for another year and has no issues with ios7 on it

I've owned all 7 iPhones.

This was going to be the year 2013 that I was going to skip the iPhone 5s model.

For some reason I woke up at 340am eastern time on September 20th and ordered the iPhone 5s.

I had planned on keeping the iPhone 5. But since i have verizon and att and the verizon iPhone 5s works on both networks. I felt the need to get it.

I mainly use the 5s on att. But there may be times i take my nano verizon sim (I use micro adapter) to put in iPad. But it feels good to be able to sim swap between verizon and att and maintain lte speeds.

I went three years on my iPhone 4, through iOS 4, 5, 6 and 7. I am surprised how well it ran iOS 7 given the age of the hardware and the advances in the OS and apps.

I will be doubly surprised if in three years there will be enough leapfrogs in specs and capabilities, that the 5s will "appear" underpowered to as many people as the iPhone 4 on iOS 7 is right now.

That's the interesting part... how far we'll come in just three to five years again.

I am in the "newest iphone every fall" plan. Considering what resale is on these things is what keeps me doing it.

I'm keeping my 5s as part of my collection. Use it till 6 comes out lol
