Let others review first , not taking that big jump .
So far the early impressions are quite positive. Yet given how so many people were salivating for this model, I'd say just take the plunge if you are in need of a computer.

Surely the best review is your own - you have 14 days+ to return it.
I think we're approaching the holiday return period, if people wait a couple of days you get a much longer return period

I'm very tempted to order today, but I'm still cannot decide between 6 core and 8 core models. I knew 6 core is enough for me, but with $400 more I can get a better CPU + GPU + 1TB SSD, which could be useful in the long run. My main usage would be running machine learning models + coding. Anyone has any suggestion?

I heard Bestbuy carries some stock right now, and some have already got theirs. I was wondering why there is no review about the performance?

If you plan to do any decent coding and running ML algorithms that do NOT include anything along DL/RL/IL with TensorFlow then you're better off maxing out your CPU/RAM/Storage and getting the cheapest GPU. To get your models to generalize and provide good performance, you're going to need large amounts of data.

I’ve taken a big plunge on this MBP 16” as been waiting for the 2016-19 15” butterflies to be discontinued. It’s time as my Non-retina 2012 15” while still good for basic stuff it’s touch pad was driving me nuts with the changes in functionality / usability in macOS. Can’t wait for a retina screen!

Hoping this model will have had much of the issues finally ironed out and I feel cautiously optimistic as so far the reviews of the Vega 20 15” have been better than before.

Went with:

2.4, 64GB, 2TB, 5500 8GB, SpaceGrey, AppleCare+ - UK shipping is a long wait Dec 2nd-4th.

Curious if other UK orders have had their card billed yet? Me not....

They don't bill the card till just before it is shipped if I recall (saves them hassle if people cancel orders prior to shipping, no need to refund/cancel charges).

I find it interesting that a number of outlets are offering modestly-sized discounts on the new 16" MBP already.
Apple used to be quite strict about this, but it looks like their policies have changed.

I'm guessing they really want to "move these out the showroom doors", and in doing so rebuild some of the goodwill that was in jeopardy of being lost by the flawed 2016-19 butterfly-keyboard models.

Also, I recall reading (probably right here on macrumors) that prior to the official release, Apple's suppliers had been building up a big stock of these for shipment.

The 2019 16" looks like it's gonna be a home run for Apple.
I hope they keep it up and soon introduce either a revamped 13"... or perhaps a 13.5" or 14" "rework" of the smaller-sized laptop!

Are you sure? I didn’t think they were shipping yet!

What sort of Machine Learning are your doing? If your models are NN and they are at all complex, I would question spending a lot of money on any system without an Nvidia GPU. Like it or not, only Nvidia GPU acceleration is supported by most ML/DL packages.

I like my MacBook Pro, but for many of my models training on any MacBook is considerable slower than training on a system with a Nvidia GPU or training online at colab.research.google.com. Colab is free and they have Nvidia GPUs available.

Thanks for your input. I do agree with you. Anything related to NN would better off with Nvidia card. No doubt about that.

Apart from that, I do some non-standard machine learning, i.e., testing some newly designed algorithms, typically with some numerical packages, such as Python/R/MATLAB.

Send it back and get what you want... this is too important a purchase not to get what you want. Yes, you will have a slightly longer wait, but in the overall scheme of things, what’s a short wait compared to years of ownership?

Joe

Looking back, I ordered it in the haze of my sleep at 5:45-ish am when it first appeared on the Apple Store website. I do a fair bit of virtualization so maybe I should've gotten the 32 GB configuration, but because I do VM work occasionally, I think 16 GB should work too...

My 13-inch MBP currently has 16 GB of RAM and when Parallels is open, along with 20 Chrome tabs, the machine does slow down...

I did learn my lesson about storage though...1 TB should be plenty compared to the 256 GB that my current 13-inch MBP has...

Oh well...

Still thinking about it and thinking if I want to give up my mid-2015 base model.

Honing in hardcore though on a base 16" with 32GB RAM as the only upgrade:

-Go from 4 cores to 6 (faster base/turbo clocks too)
-Double the RAM (faster too)
-Double the SSD (faster too I would assume)
-Go from NO discreet GPU to one that's better than Vega 20
-Go from 300 nits to 500 nits brightness which is honestly probably the thing I want the most.

Then all the other things like the better speakers, keyboard, screen, battery, etc.

The base with 32 GB RAM should last a long time and with the base processor and GPU, it will run really cool and quiet and have outstanding battery life. Hell of a machine for $2559 after education discount.

it seems for us in Europe anything outside of the base model gets moved to December.

Base model deliveries are out on November 29th

The problem is correlated with running all 8 cores for extended (1-13 or so days). I run Stata, a statistical analysis program. However, the segfaults are not being tied to the software in the logs; they are being tied to the CPUs. I sent the log files to Apple, and I believe that whatever Apple engineers noticed in the log file are what precipitated their offer for me to return the computer for the latest model. It did not hurt that I noted that Apple computer crashes in front of a class of graduate students who could be potential customers does not bode well for apple. Interestingly, some of my graduate students were running the same software on older Apple machines (2018 and earlier), and they experienced no problems that they communicated to me.

If it is two machines that would lead me to believe it is the software or drivers. Is it a specific application?

You wouldn't be jealous if you saw the abysmal salary I have which allows me to get the education discount. :)

Examine your log files in the console application. You will see a Crash Reports section... check there and in the diagnostic reports.

What causes that? Any software or action in particular?

Also how can you tell it's happening? I wonder if that's what's making my Mac feel slow
