I'm *almost* decided on what I'm going for - but still interested in what you all ordered!

Maybe..

  • Spec
  • What you'll be using it for

As soon as they land for in store pick up (Friday I was told by Apple) I am getting the base 6 core in Silver...

Home use mainly with some video editing. The specs are overkill for my use but I am after the larger screen mainly..

Due to the exorbitant costs of the 2015-2019 models I switched from exclusively using a 15" MBP (Late 2013) to an iMac 27" (upgraded) + 13" MBP (base model, 2019).

That being said, if I had to replace the setup I would get
  • 8 cores (without the 2.4 upgrade, not worth it)
  • AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory
  • 32GB RAM (I have 40GB on the iMac and barely scratch 30GB at max load)
  • 2TB SSD
  • AppleCare+
I would use it for video editing and for working from home on occasion.

In my bag now I have 2 systems. Both the base 1TB units and AppleCare +. One with 16GB of RAM, one with 32 GB of RAM. Still debating whether the extra 16 GB of ram is worth $300 just in case I run some VMs or Containers. Decisions, decisions.

Ok I decided!

8 core
8GB GPU Ram
64GB RAM
1TB HD (prefer to utilise USB-C SSDs for extra space and security)

(No upgrade on CPU - doesn't seem worth it for 1 or 2 second bursts)

I went for more ram because I will be using an LG 5K monitor and I have a ton of spaces open with lots of programs, and memory has always been the bottleneck in my current Mac.

I just hope I don't want the Mac Pro when that comes out in Dec!!!!!! LOL!!!!

I would go for more RAM - every Apple update has slowed down my previous Mac I suspect because of Ram more than anything else.

You make sense, and are costing me money. :)

Torn on two choices. Both would have same RAM/GPU (32 GB and 8 GB 5500 because why not, I buy and keep for years).

Option 1:

2.4 Octa-Core
512 GB SSD
$3019

Option 2:

2.3 Octa-Core
1 TB SSD
$3049

I have about 100 GB used total on my current MBP. No real expectation for that to increase other than some pics and videos dumping periodically from my phone.

1) The only 8 core available on the 512 model is the higher 2.4, which I really, truly don't need over the 2.3. But then I'd have the top processor and still plenty of space.

2) The 1 TB model comes with the cheaper 2.3, and 1 TB is nice, but will I ever realistically even fill 512? Could be trading a marginally better processor away for extra SSD size I'll likely never use.

I'll be blunt, both machines are total overkill for my ipad-level basic uses - I don't need any of these specs. But I want to keep it 6-8 years, and am worried about the 512 SSD starting to slow down if I get it closer to half full.

So, best processor I totally don't need and smaller SSD which is likely still plenty, or nearly indistinguishably equally fast processor and 1TB? Leaning toward the latter, but not sure.

How long have you had your current MBP?

If one or two years then I'd say that's a good indication of needing a larger ssd. If 5 years or so then 512 may be sufficient for you :D

I think 1TB is a nice size and you'll probably get more out of it than the cpu bump.

I've cultivated this 100 gigs over the past decade, lol. But, pics and vids are much larger file sizes today.

Both of those options are way over kill for your "ipad level basic uses". If your use style stays that way, even the base 16" MBP ($2399 pure base with no options added on) should last you the 6 years. You could probably even get away with a specced up Macbook Air. If you're like me and have a billion Chrome tabs open at once though, i would probably go with that 32 GB RAM though because Chrome is RAM hungry as is. Otherwise, save yourself a couple hundred dollars and tone down those BTO options.

Not yet. Got a 2012 MacBook Pro 15" still doing everything I throw at it. I'm interested to see what happens in the next 2 years with the rumoured replacement of Intel processors with ARM. My wife has a 2019 15" MacBook Pro and I can't tell the difference with basic stuff like email, web browsing and file management. I know I'd see a difference with my occasional video editing and photo editing that I do but I can afford to wait a little longer. :)

I’m ready and have been waiting to get the MBP 13” but given that I was going for a 512 ssd with 16gb ram and it’s not THAT much more for a base 16”. That’s a no brainer for me with the major spec jumps between the two. 16” it’ll be soon. Going to wait just a little longer for Black Friday. Can’t wait. It’s been 8 1/2 years since I got my iMac. Going mobile this time. Super excited!

Ordered the 16" this morning:

  • 2.4GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz
  • AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory
  • 64GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
  • 4TB SSD storage

I have to save up for a few months before I can buy one. Though by the time I have the money, it will be close to the spring event so I might as well wait and see and then buy right after the event ends

Faster processor or more RAM? I am torn between these two options, which cost the same:

Option 1:
  • 2.6GHz 6-core 9th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz
  • 64GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
  • AMD Radeon Pro 5300M with 4GB of GDDR6 memory
  • 512GB SSD
Option 2
  • 2.3GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.8GHz
  • 32GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
  • AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 4GB of GDDR6 memory
  • 1TB SSD storage
I am a heavy photoshop user and only dabble with video sporadically. I'd like to have it for ca 5 years. 512GB storage is plenty. Which of these options would you go for? Thanks for any tips!
