An update:

To refresh: I was NOT previously a t-mobile customer financing an Air. When I bought it I was promised that I would only owe the finance amount and would not be required to sign a data agreement.

So yesterday I got a bill in the mail for $10. I was told that I would always have a ten doable credit to offset it. So I called, AGAIN.

And, to me continuing surprise, I was once again assured that I will not have to pay it. The credit will appear at the end of the cycle, apparently.

Unless you want to finance your new iPad Air, you don't need to buy it from T-Mobile. Just grab any cellular version of Air, and activate a new T-Mobile sim card by setting up a new account on the new iPad (hack, or just like me setting up the new account on an used Verizon iPad mini), you will get the free 200MB data plan, no credit card asked, so I assume no way to charge you tax, either. It is just that simple!

iPad Air it the first Tablet that supports all major US cellular carriers.

all you have is he say I said, no written proof, no contract modified written changes, you will get charged.

The Pres messed up on twitter and such, the site and all else was written as the business wanted.

I guess you could sue the Pres, but is his twitter considered legal to change a contract you signed? I don't think so.

I hope you do get the finance for free, but as it stands you will get charged for a plan if you did the payment plan.

If you want to pay 0, you have to BYOdevice or pay full price.

Well at this point I have the names and employee ID #'s of the 4 different CSR's who as recently as yesterday told me I won't be required to pay. So I don't think anybody will be suing anyone.

It seems clear, that I was offered a deal that doesn't exist, and they are going to honor that deal. And T-mobile is smart to honor the deals of those of us who bought while being misinformed.

My reason for starting this thread was to see how many others there are in this boat.

Like I said, I hope they honor it for you, but I don't think they will. So what if you have names and ID#'s, you never dealt w/ CS phone depts before if you think that would make a difference.

They will prob give you some type of credit, maybe a few months, but don't think they will let you keep paying 24 months free of interest/charge.

GL either way!

Not so sure about that. There are many of us in this boat but we shall see. It's not like he is the only one being told this. If they are systematically continuing to lie to those of us who ordered earlier before they changed the promotion that is sad.

It's not like we bought house or even a car. Worst case scenario they don't honor the agreement and I will return it. Problem solved

Every time I try to activate saying the server is down

Yeah, they seem to be consistently telling us early adopters that they'll honor the free service plan deal along with the financing. At this point i'd like to see it disappear from my bill but that seems unlikely. I plan to call at some point this week to verify again but I kind of hate being that persistent customer so hopefully they just honor it and make life easy for us at this point. They are doing well to do so. For me this is a test run for my iphone too. I'm potential future business, not just existing business.

mine was shipped this morning and will check my account to see whether the $10 charge appears.

anyone got an update on this topic?

My update is tomorrow is my last day to return it, and after talking to many, many service reps over the last two weeks I'm confident that I will get the deal promised to me, so I'm hanging on to it.

My bill shows a $10 charge but I've been promised that a ten dollar credit will be added when "the bill closes out".

unpacked the ipad, activated and logged on to find $10/monthly for "On Demand". I'm assuming the mentioned credit will be applied directly to my bill and thus doesn't appear under "Plans & Services". to be confirmed.

I have no idea what the hell this on demand you guys are talking about. I bough my ipad air from an Apple retail store, stuck in a tmobile sim card, and now I am using the 200MB free a month. They ask for my name, address, phone number but didnt ask for any kind of payment info, except if I wanted to add additional data options.

I dont know why you guys are making it more complicated for everyone here. It sounds like a scheme tmobile want to rip you off when financing with them.

I was in the same boat! Walked into T-mobile on launch day for the Air, was told about the "free" financing, was promised no restocking fee if returned within 14 days and no monthly data plan fees. I wasn't a pre-existing T-mobile customer, but was starting to think about switching to them.

Then I get my paperwork in the mail. There was a $20/month data plan mandatory with the financing "deal".

In the end I returned the Air (T-mobile tried to charge a restocking fee, but ended up waiving it) and bought a Mini from Apple without financing. The relative convenience of not paying for an iPad up front was not worth the possibility of having to negotiate with customer service reps for the next two years.

Lesson learned - there's no such thing as free money. At least T-mobile didn't give me too much hassle about the return.

IF YOU HAVE A EXISTING VOICE PLAN WITH T Mobile: They show a charge of $10 minimum on your bill, but will credit your bill $10 every month, so it washes out. The only thing you may have to pay is the tax on the $10 usage charge because T Mobile is still on the hook for paying the government taxes. So you might end up paying (a guestimate) of 50¢ or so.

IF YOU DON'T HAVE A EXISTING VOICE PLAN: If you don't have voice plan you have to pay a $20 a month charge of which $10 is credited to your account, if you want the 0% financing. So basically you're paying $10 + taxes to finance a $700 ipad and you get 200 mb of service with it if you don't have a voice plan with T Mobile. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

If you have a existing voice plan you don't have to pay a thing (except payments on the ipad of course). I know because I just got my first bill and the only extra charge is the $26.95 ipad payment.

It's confusing yes, but if you read through all the fine print, it explains it all.

You are correct on all accounts. However, I started this thread for people (like myself) who went in on that first weekend and were given incorrect information.
And the fine print on my contract does not explain it.

They told many people that there would be no additional charges. So this is just about will they honor the terms they explained to customers before t-mobile themselves got their house in order.

But yeah, I got a deal that doesn't exist. I'm just interested in making sure they honor it.

Yes indeed same here, promised financing with free data - no strings, not a previous customer, ordered on day2 of availability. Just received the device Thursday this week.

So far my bill looks good, says $0.00 currently but it hasn't updated yet. The only reference to any data payment due is $10 on demand if I click on 'view plan'. We'll see how it actually goes as I believe my first payment isn't due until January. I have a good feeling they will honor the terms for whatever that is worth. There is no reference to the now required $20.00 data plan anywhere on my account. Only on demand + free 200mb 'network pass'.

then that's not 0% financing, is it?

Lets say an iPad + 200mb free data + tax = ~ $540
They have a deal for 0% apr financing?

$540 at 0% apr over 2 years is $45/month. not $45+$10 month.

seems like a bait and switch to me.

edit - to be clear, i think your post was very concise and helpful, my complaint is with T Mobile and the lack of clarity - thank you for spelling it out :)

Same boat here.

The only difference is that I ordered super early on launch day and received it 2 Thursday ago. Been loving it since

I hope they end up fulfilling their promise. Spoke to more than a dozen rep over the launch weekend with same confirmation

Called again during mini2 silent launch to see if I can do the same thing with a mini 2, but the fine print this time around is clear saying u must have existing voice plan.

So having existing data plan doesn't get u another 10 credit

Ordered mini 2 on launch day. It would he gotten here on the 25. Cancelled the order 2 days afterwards as my local apple store started to hv them in stock. So I went and got a mini 2 32gb with tmobile

The mobile plan to give 200mb and to hv the ability to add more is very convenient

Yup. I would have not bought a cellular version without this free 200MB/month

Well, i'm on the phone right now with T-mobile because my bill is due this Friday and they still haven't removed the monthly fee. I'm basically waiting on a supervisor because the customer rep I was speaking with completely reversed everything i'd been told to date and insisted I was going to be charged a monthly fee for the plan. When I tried to discuss buying the ipad outright she seemed confused by that option so I just asked for a supervisor and am on hold. The only concession she was willing to offer was waiving the fee for the first month.

I was pretty pissed. I'm usually very calm and patient and unaggressive with customer service reps but I was somewhat belligerent since I'd been assured multiple times that all would be fine. It's not her fault that her company is such a mess but i'm really disappointed in t-mobile. The worst part is that she insisted that if I decide to return the ipad it has to be done today since today is the end of the return window. This is huge since clearly i'd be effed if I didn't call this morning. And i'm still going to be effed since I already unloaded my ipad 2. I use the ipad for work so it's kind of a big deal.

Anyhow, hopefully this is just an issue with my account for some reason and not others in the same boat.

If it were me, and who knows it might be soon, I would be firm.

Please let us know how it resolves itself.

Yeah I hear you. I'm just not very firm about these things. I don't like conflict very much. Anyhow, the Supervisor hung up on me. I was trying to get clarification on what I could do if I bought the ipad outright and she just kept repeating the same line about financing the ipad resulting in a monthly fee. So I called back and got a new rep and the resolution is not totally comforting but if it works i'll be good.

The new CSR explained that if I pay off the ipad, that I can then cancel the monthly service plan and re-activate a new service account with them and i'd be just like a pre-paid. He then agreed to waive the first month of service. He was clear that I would have to wait for the pay off to clear the system which could take a day or two. And I asked why I couldn't do that right now and basically it's because I haven't been billed for the balance yet so I will have to wait for the bill to come in December in order to implement this process. Basically the way their system work there was no way to instantly pay off the balance until it was billed.

I have to admit this resolution is somewhat worrisome but if it doesn't work out correctly i'll just dump t-mobile completely and permanently. Mainly for the hassle and being so mis-leading. ETA. My balance did go from $10.33 to $0 after the call so he did waive the first months service for me ok.
