My niece and I both bought new phones this week I bought the xr and she bought the max. I’ve played with both of them Extensively and I have to say the only time I saw a difference was when I went in a room shut all the lights off. The max has pure black screen but the xr didn’t look to bad for an lcd. I’ve been looking hard for blurry text and such things posted over here and I just don’t see it. Before I bought the phone I was concerned about the screen based on everything that I was reading, however it’s really exceeded my expectations. Everything with this phone works as advertised so far.

Update: I’m returning it for the 8+. The display on the 8+ is just so sharp I love it. iPhone XR display is a crime in 2018.
[doublepost=1541548955][/doublepost]I really don’t understand how I’m the only one who can see that’s the 8+ and XS are sharper than the XR...even the YouTube app alone looks really low res compared to the 8 and XS...
You’re not the only one.

Just returned my white XR for the space gray 8+ and yup the screen is sooo much better and I love how thin this phone is. This should last me 2-3 years easily.

Glad you are at last happy. That is what it is all about! I enjoy my 8+ as my work phone. You can’t go wrong with it. :)

I really don't get why some of you are acting like the XR screen is potato quality? It's literally the same as the 8, 7, 6. And it looks better than those bc of software improvements.
Of course the XS/XS Max screen is better, but the XR is still a great display.

8+ is the most refined model of the 6 design language. It’s very nice and will last you awhile.

They all must be utterly miserable when they have to drag out those LCD iPads and MacBooks. God what garbage displays those things have.
You don’t hold those nearly as close as a phone.

You seriously value a little baby phone display more than a big beautiful iPad, MacBook, or iMac display? What is so freaking mission-critical about a dinky little 6" display to people? I must be of the wrong generation.

I'd also be curious to see how physically close some around here actually hold the phone to their face. Looking around public transport it doesn't seem all that closer than iPads (and their much lower 264PPI), which follows my own personal usage. I mean, I get that you're sticking the phone in your face during initial inspection to feel good about the purchase, but I'm talking after that honeymoon is over and you go back to brainlessly scrolling content from your lap like every other dead-inside phone user.
I use my smartphone as my laptop, iPad, etc...so yeah it’s imortant to me.

A follow up question to the XR notebookcheck review:

If it‘s said by some 324 ppi LCD in XR is not a high enough resolution, them, I wonder, how would 302 ppi of blue and red subpixels next to the much higher green dot resolutiion in XS OLED be enough?

I think I understand the different perception of green, red, and blue, and why OLED uses diamond matrix, but I’m still unsure: Besides perfectly high green pixel density of XS, is 302 ppi for red and blue high enough?

PS, I agree, 8+ for resolution king.

...and you've posted several times your justification and again now! LOL! Continuing to do exactly what you accuse everyone else of doing. Just enjoy your damn iPhone already! Like a little kid with a new toy... mine is more shiny than yours. Geez!!

I will repeat because you don’t seem to be taking it on board. I do not need to justify anything whatsoever to you or anybody. I know myself from experience what screen is better or worse for my EYE’s and it’s quite a big margin. Does it annoy you that i don’t get side affects from OLED and you think i mention it because i’m trying to justify my purchase? or is it that i agreed with someone elses post. Stop trolling my posts please.

Sadly, it's not a stretch. 8+ is way sharper than XR. I compared it myself with various text sizes and images. I laughed at people who got furious over the announcement of 326ppi on XR. Now I'm thinking of returning it, because of the blurry fonts. It's truly disappointing. XR is beautifully compacted phone with barely passable display.
Apple really thought they could fool the majority of people. Maybe they did.
You’re grossly exaggerating!
[doublepost=1541594634][/doublepost]Reading through this thread I’m convinced some of you get a thrill putting down the “budget” phone whilst letting us all know you have a better model. How sad.

But what if i tell you that i bought a Laptop for $750 dollars with 1366x768 res instead of 1080p? You would thought that they are stealing me.
The problem with the Xr is that it's not cheap like an SE and they are putting and old spec screen. It could affect you or not , like my previous example, some people could live with a 1366x768 screen. I can't cause of the use i give to a laptop or a phone

I know that. I have a 7+ I compare my XR to and I find it fine. I think ppl are just being hysterical based on specs.
I agree. I had a XR for 5 days and returned it for the XS only because the XR felt too big. I was perfectly happy with the XR screen. It’s a beauty. Coming from an 8+ I saw no difference. I only see a slight difference between the XS OLED and XR LCD. I wonder how many of the people here put down the XR screen have actually seen it up close.
[doublepost=1541599813][/doublepost]
The resolution on the iPad is much higher than on the Xr. Also you view an iPad from much further away than a phone.
I view my iPad at close to the same distance as my phone and I have the 12.9” iPad.

Right, but this is a comparison thread by title. You're not gonna get the Mister Rogers
loves my XR warm fuzzies with every poster.

Also, you will find people on both sides of the coin...many will defend their purchases.

At the store, I couldn’t tell the difference between screens until I zoomed so that a single word (both an XS Max and XR on ESPN’s homepage) filled the entire screen. The XS Max was a teeny tiny bit crisper at the edges. When not zoomed in? No difference. Photos? They were even more identical.

The only difference was that one screen generally had a yellower tint, but I wasn’t sure if True Tone was kicking in on one phone but not the other.

Maybe the 7+ and 8+ have sharper screens at regular because they’re 401ppi and LCD (not pentile). The XS and XS Max don’t have much of a real-world sharpness difference over the XR.

I think the numbers about subpixels in the notebookcheck article are questionable.
I made some math in another thread for comparing Apple's screens, only on the subpixel density aspect:
https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...t-mean-anything.2149142/page-10#post-26714684

As many did, should be distinguished displaying full screen videos or pictures (and then, rather compared color accuracy because for most people, every retina screens are crisp enough), and displaying text or app UI (and then, here, sharpness) in this kind of thread.

Does anyone know why on other devices, for example the Samsung S8 or oneplus6, when watching Netflix it shows on a full screen. While on an iPhone it shows black bars on the sides? While all phones have a 19:5 aspect ratio.

The display difference is very noticeable. I have had a Max since launch, but picked up an Xr when my wife was due for her upgrade with the intention of giving her my Max. I was intrigued by the lower price point and felt that the feature sacrifices were minor for my particular usage, so I figured it would be a net win. However, using it for a couple of days, I couldn't get past the screen difference. After using the Max for a month, the screen on the Xr felt like a toy and almost cartoonish. This was something that I didn't think would bother me at all, but it did. Long story short, I exchanged the Xr for the XS (wife wanted the smaller phone) and stuck with my Max with a better appreciation for it.

Maybe if I had gone from my 8+ directly to the Xr I wouldn't have been so bothered by the screen, but after seeing the other side there was no going back.

Oh trust me the 8+ looks better than the XR as well.

Needless to say there is a difference between an LCD and OLED screen. But how noticeable depends on what you use your iPhone for
If your surfing the web the difference isn’t as noticeable as in photos. Yet both types of screens produce an excellent color range
Let’s put it this way, it’s all about preference
