So would I, even the Note 9 or that Huawei Mate Pro thingy.

Its amazing to me how people are just justifying their individual purchases. If you look at just the pure facts the XS/XMAX is a much better phone than the XR. No need to list the facts again. It comes down to if you think the extra/better features are worth the money, period. If its a financial decision then go with the XR, if money is no object the XS/XMAX is the better phone. Also as a side note on text not being clear on the XR and optomization of apps etc, I see that on Safari the text is small and not clear so Apple itself released a phone without optimizing its own app? That I find hard to believe.

I personally go with the best and my XS is perfect.

Or just buy both phones.

I can appreciate why people are sticking up for their choices. At first I thought it was good that Apple released all 3 devices this year but this is the first time since owning iPhones that it's been such a tough decision for me. Price wasn't a factor but the MAX was out right away due to its size. With the XR and XS I have in front me, I just keep going back and forth between them. There's a lot to like about both phones.

For me personally, these are my pros and cons:

XR 128 Pros
-Battery life
-Excellent screen (not too yellow with TT)
-128GB option
Cons
-Size (one handed use does suffer)
-Weight
-Some backlight uniformity issues (my XR's top right corner is darker than the rest of the screen)
-No interaction with lock screen notifications using long-press (and no 3D touch)

XS 256 Pros
-Size (one handed use is doable)
-Dual Cams (I've come to appreciate the 2x Optical zoom vs digital)
-3Dtouch (I mainly use it for lock screen notifications action)
Cons
-No 128GB option
-OLED screen, while great, seems almost too yellow with TT ON

In terms of sharpness, I honestly could not see a difference between the XR and XS in daily use (no pixel peeping). I will say the OLED screen does seem to pop, almost looks 3D, compared to the XR. It wasn't necessarily a pro, just a little different. And at least on my two units, the XS had better uniformity across the screen (XR's backlight wasn't 100% uniform).

I've now packed up the XR and I'm leaning towards keeping the XS. I just hope I can get used to TT's yellow-ish hue on OLED.

While having both phones to compare is very handy, I'm pretty sure I would have been fine with either phone had I just picked one and stuck with it from the start. Enjoy your phones everyone : )

let me guess no signal problems?
There you go i didn’t think you would have.
:D This thread is the best! :))))
Let's see how Apple fans think!
For owners of xss and maxs it seems that buying the iphone xr is somehow like buying an android phone in their minds. Is like the need for superiority, when in fact, they lack affection. "why don't you buy xs, max, cuz i did and is the best. You should do like i did, cuz i am i."
Now... my lg g7 think is fine, maybe better than xr and xs and max. For me it sure is.

Thanks for the comparison. It seems your XR has a faulty screen. Mine looks quite even. Nevertheless, you can make an informed decision because of your hands-on comparing. Enjoy your XS.

Lightbleed is an issue with LCD panels. Has always been a problem for iPhones. The switch to OLED panels was the best decision Apple made. The biggest issue is Apple going with a 750p LCD panel over going with a minimum 1080p. The cost difference was pennies per display and worth the investment. Apple made a poor choice and now they are seeing this with a pull back on XR assembly lines.

Wait, where is Apple using a 750p panel?

I personally much prefer my XR screen over all other iPhones including the XS Max as it looks crap with True Tone on, again IMO.

..

IMO all iphones especially the XR look crap with true tone on, i never have used it..

Personally i find the 8+ phone screen sharper than the XR. Videos in 1080p look better on the 8+. The 8+ is the only LCD i would have if i had no other choice but to have a LCD.

I presume that pointless post was aimed at me

1. I’m not an Apple fan but iphones are ok and i own a ipad air 2

2. I love Android phones i buy them. I recently bought a Note 9 and to date i think it’s the best smartphone i have ever owned, the max might be in second place..

It all has to do with resolution on the xr. The ppi is there, low but is there.
Try this. Go to your laptop/pc display and change resolutions. You will find that some weird resolutions give you eye strain and blury fonts, and normal resolutions are a pleasure to the eye. Every gamer knows this. This is one of the many reasons i stay away from crapple. Weird resolutions. It's all geometry and optics. Aliasing effects on these weird resolutions are bad.
X, xs and max are also affected. IMO oled is a little better display, not huge diffrence. But is stuttering and has bad viewing angles.
Ips all the way.
Have had 2k display since 2013 on a smartphone, then 4k, now 3k. My opinion is that 2k is a must. Xs and max are NOT true 2k displays. Period. Xr is not 720 also.
Advice: stay away from weird resolutions!

But is stuttering and has bad viewing angles.

I believe the LG phone panels ( not the large oled tv panels as i have a Sony 55” that uses a LG screen is the best screen i have seen to date on a tv) are notorious for stuttering and bad viewing angles. The Samsung panel on my iphone max in my eyes doesn’t have them issues thankfully.

It was not on you, just liked those 2 quotes

Should be better than your 8+.

BTW, 8+ being way sharper is quite a stretch.

8+ is 401 ppi. Makes a difference with text. The XR has a beautiful display. However my 8+ displays sharper text. I’ve spent quite a bit of time with an XR. I don’t watch movies on my 8+, but read text all day. The XR would be an issue in that category only for me. :apple:

I have played with an xs max for about 30 minutes and the stutter is there when you scroll black text on white background..it gived me eye strain and dizziness...
Is there also an lg panel on x, xs, max?

And this is an interesting review which I’m sure you’ve seen...

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Apple-iPhone-XR-Smartphone-Review.346971.0.html

“The XR has a 6.1-inch IPS display that runs at a 1,792 x 828 native resolution and pixel density of 324 PPI. The iPhone XS and XS Max both have a 463 PPI, but strictly speaking, the XR has a sharper display. The more expensive iPhones have a PenTile OLED matrix display with 2 sub-pixels per pixel compared to the XR’s 3. Hence, the iPhone XS and XS Max effectively have a pixel density of 302 PPI because of their fewer sub-pixels“.

IMHO this „subpixel salad“, maybe more than published resolution alone, goes a little more to the point of the resolution, sharpness, and broader speaking, screen quality debate of the competing XS OLED vs. XR LCD - at least I find it quite fascinating.

As I understand, the XS has a significant advantage at green pixel resolution over the XR, but not so with red and blue pixels. To me, the obvious questions to ask are not only about sharpness or contrast, where XS obviously excels, but the effects (if at all) of said diamond pentile matrix vs. those of classic pixel arrangement.

Besides, I also ask myself: Is it possible that some viewing problems are not only related to PWM, but also to diamond matrix pixel layout of the XS OLED, while XR are described as „easier on the eyes“?

That said, to my almost 50 year old eyes, both XS and XR screens look excellent enough to be used for a year or some. XS just a little sharper, punchier, XR a little more relaxed, more even.

This has probably been posted somewhere around MR, but I just ran across it: Apple iPhone XR: Three features I love, and one I hate. Concerning the screen:

Look, we can sit here and argue how on paper the iPhone XS and XS Max OLED display is better than the iPhone XR's LCD display. We can talk about how, technically, the iPhone XR's screen is a lower resolution than the iPhone 8 Plus. And how all of that means that the iPhone XR's display is inferior, and surely going to provide a worse experience.

And we'd be wrong. Technically, yes, on paper, those are the facts. But in practice, while holding the iPhone XR in your hand and looking at a photo or watching a video, this display is every bit as good as the iPhone XS.

Not once during the past week have I looked at something on the iPhone XR and wished I had the XS Max. Even with the two phones side by side, the differences are minimal. There's a little more clarity on the iPhone XS Max, but it's not so much that it jumps out at you immediately. You have to look for it.

The Liquid Retina display on the iPhone XR is just fine. Great, even. And at 6.1-inches, between the XS and XS Max displays, I found the XR's overall size to be a happy middle ground.
That correlates with my comparison of the two. I wouldn't mind having a Max but don't see $450 worth of difference. Obviously, not everyone feels this way. That's okay: we spend our money as we see fit.

I know the specs, but in real life the differences aren't quite as huge. My problem with the statement that I responded to is the way sharper part. I agree it's sharper, but way part is a stretch.

[doublepost=1541548955][/doublepost]I really don’t understand how I’m the only one who can see that’s the 8+ and XS are sharper than the XR...even the YouTube app alone looks really low res compared to the 8 and XS...

It may very well have been a defect but in all honesty it wasn't a deal breaker, it was hardly noticeable. It was only when I had the XS beside it that I really saw it. Glad to hear yours is good. It seems no matter the model, each year there is some sort of display panel lottery.

I’m with you on this. My eyes see a lot different than the xr owners claim on here but that’s expected , i don’t see flicker, stutter or get dizzy( lol) or get headaches, you have to justify your purchase i guess.

The best lcd screen i have seen is the 8+ hands down. The xr looks like a downgrade, now this is to my eyes and IMO.

Do what makes you happy. I’m just glad I don’t see much difference between my XR and my 7+.

Unfortunately this is true for me also as an 8+ owner.

Rather disappointed to see in the store that the text on the XR wasn't as sharp as an 8+.

May still give it a shot to see if I get used to it.

Very good post Broadus and it just drives these folks crazy that you and I and others in this thread just don't see these display in the same light as they do. You'd think one would just be happy we each found the phone we like and that works best for us.
