Are there any apps that you can't use because you didn't update iOS? Do you also have a Mac and/or an iPhone and if so does it affect your ecosystem? I also have a 3 and I a have noticed some lag only recently. Even though I've had this thing almost 3 years I have just now started playing some games. I've noticed the most lag on those.

I plan on getting an Air 3 late this year or early next year and was contemplating keeping iOS 9 on there as long as I can use all the apps I want and I don't have to update the iOS to keep it working with my other Apple stuff.

For most apps; Apple allows you to download the last compatible version for the version of iOS you own. But there are a few apps which require the latest version of the app to work.

Also, I am not really pushing the limits on the device with the latest games - I use it for mainly media consumption, Netflix, Youtube, maps, email, surfing: all that works great.

Once in two years, three years? Would I be right in assuming that people upgrade their smartphones much faster than they do tablets?

It's been demonstrated that it is exactly that way, iPhone upgrades are much faster thant iPad upgrades.

Of course, there are exceptions. I, for one, upgrade both iPhone and iPad every year.

im not really an ipad person...
lets see..

my hubby got free 16 gb ipad 2 from his company... this is our first ipad in 2011...
at first he dont know what to do with it haha...
we kept it until today 3.5yrs in service...
mostly my son is using it.. i got ipad mini retina last year.... after a year i sold it... im not happy with the size.... i always use the ipad 2 than the mini 2.
i bought ipad air 2 for myself and ipad air 1 for my son ...because ipad 2 is having low sound issues already....

I upgraded my 2 to the Air, but am not sure when I will do my next upgrade, if it will keep the 3 year cycle or not.

iPad 2 > iPad 3 because of the retina display > iPad Air 2 cuz the iPad 3 got so slow and it's too heavy and fat. I think the Air 2 will last me at least 2+ Gens now. first I had the Air 2 with 16 GB but it annoyed me to no end to think about what to put on it due to storage problems so I gave it back and picked the 64GB one instead. LOVE IT and it will also be more future proof than the 16GB one

I've had every iPad including the mini's until this year when I upgraded my Air/Mini 2 to the iPad Air 2.

I won't be upgrading my Air 2 for the foreseeable future unless they release something on the hardware side that's completely off my radar. Spec bumps won't do it for me and the size is perfect.

I upgrade my iPhones every year.

I may not update my iPad after all. I'm thinking of getting the new rMB in which case I'd just use my iPad 3 for reading and some light iOS-only games until it finally dies.

Then I may get an inexpensive Retina Mini, but who knows...

I'd like to get a new iPad right now, but I think I'll wait another year and get a cheap Air 2. So, my iPad 2 should last 5 years. Initially I thought it would be wasteful to replace my iPad at all, since I have an rMPB and a 6+, but the rMBP isn't a tablet and the phone is still not big enough. Stop making me give you all my money, Apple! D:

Got a refurbished iPad 4 when the Air came out, and see no reason to upgrade as of now. It's a little laggy when switching between apps and in safari sometimes, but for what i use it - mainly taking handwritten notes and annotating PDFs for class - it works fine. :D

Don't worry, so is the Air.

I still have my original iPad Retina Mini 128GB T-Mobile.

Not sure if I will ever get another iPad again. It will have to be something really great. The Air 2 wasn't.

I sold my iPad Air last September.

Still on the iPad2, would like to upgrade but the Air2 don't appeal to me..
The anorexia has gone to far with this model.

Really hoping for a sturdier model with no vibration when using sound and for the love of something: Give me dual login accounts :)

I received the iPad 3 as a gift shortly after it was launched. It was my first iPad and it got a lot of use. In early 2014 I replaced it with a wifi iPad mini 2. That was sold after a few months to get an LTE iPad mini 2, which I've had since. I might get an iPad mini 4 or the next iteration of the full size iPad. I'll always get LTE (or whatever is the next wireless data tech) versions though. It's just nice to have the GPS and the option for data if I need it. I hate carrying around extra things like portable routers of I don't have to.

Not often and not on a schedule like my phones (every two years).

I bought the original iPad in 2010, then an iPad 2 in 2011. Sold the original iPad to buy a Nexus 7 in 2012 for school use. Nexus 7 is slow and dying but iPad 2 is still great as the family device. Was looking to replace my Nexus with a Windows tablet, but TouchID is such a killer app for me. I'll hold off until the 12" iPad Pro comes out then make my decision.

I see a lot of happy iPad 2 owners in this thread. The retina display is and was a huge update feature. Don't think I could be content with a non retina.

I hadn't planned on it, but I pretty much update every cycle. I have a friend who likes being on the cutting edge, so he always gets the latest iPad, then sells me his last for $300 or less.

I now have 5 iPads in my family because of that.

I'll likely keep my Air 2 about another 3 years or until it flat out dies, which could be a long time. Unless something amazing comes out between now and then that I gotta have.

My first one was a iPad 2, which I upgraded to the iPad mini 1st gen just for the former factor. Last month, I just upgraded that same iPad mini to the iPad Air 2 after it started showing its age in my daily usage.

Sucks to be Canadian...

Prices are over 20% more expensive due to currency depreciation.

No plans to update ANY Apple devices at all until currency shapes up or until the hardware obsolete :)

Those upgrades have marginal at best (annually i mean) and it was cheap enough, not anymore.

In all fairness, since iPad 3 -> 4 -> air -> mini -> mini 2 and iPhone 4S -> 5 -> 5S -> 6, all the upgrades did not give me the satisfaction I had been expecting... Yes they were "better" but honestly I could do well enough with the old devices in reality.

I think I would get the enjoyment back to be wowed by a few generation worth of difference :)

My first iPad was the iPad Air.

I skipped the iPad Air 2 as the models new features/specks didn't bring anything to the table that made me want to upgrade.

I bought an original iPad 64 Gig 3G model at launch. And a iPad 4 16 gig wifi model a few months after it launched

I don't see myself ever upgrading it.
