generally, I would say I tend to change mine every 1.5 years. Usually take an 18 month contract. If I get tired and bored of it before then, I pay to take an early upgrade.

Just in my circle of friends, I am aware I am definitely not the only one for obvious (and common sense) reasons.
Pretty much the same here - I don't need 4G, so I have a £12 a month plan in Unlimited internet, texts, and calls from TalkTalk.

I really don't mind paying upfront for a device that will last me two years, rather than have to be a huge fee if the phone is stolen or lost... Also, pricing by carriers such as Vodafone is ridiculous!

Indeed, but as a long-time O2 customer I tend to use their large data plans.

I've never upgraded my iPhone.

I wouldn't know how to. I know some people tinker with their computers, but I would probably end up breaking it if I tried to put a new processor in or a better camera.

As infrequently as possible. Either when my current phone breaks (home button etc), or a combination software/hardware updates stops something working or brings in a really compelling new feature.

I'm at 2 years 2 months on my iPhone 5, non-contract the whole time.

I'm waiting to see what the 6S offers, and how well iOS 9 works on the iPhone 5. Ideally I'd like to squeeze as much use out of the 5 as possible, but it would be nice to have an upgraded display and TouchID.

I don't have a specific order, but it will be my first time to upgrade a year after the previous iPhone. I've got an iPhone 6 now, and I plan to upgrade to the iPhone 6s. The funny thing is that I promised myself to wait for two years before another upgrade.

But after hearing about all those rumors about the next iPhone I am convinced enough to do the early upgrade. Even if the changes aren't that huge, I will still upgrade. See, my sister wants an iPhone 6 after her bad experience with the Samsung Galaxy S4 (before that she had an iPhone 5s which was stolen a few months later). She really wants to get back to iPhone, and me and my father were thinking: why don't I just sell mine to her? That would be a win-win situation: she's got here iPhone 6, and I can get that iPhone 6s! :D

I usually upgrade every year because the iPhone keeps such good resale value that it usually seems worth it to sell on Craigslist and pay the difference but I don't see it happening this year. Plus I'm not as Apple obsessed these days anymore, if anything I want a new Mac.

Every two years for me. Started with the 3g then 4, 5, 6 and will upgrade again next year with the 7. (I prefer to upgrade on the remodel vs new hardware features since the new remodel will have the newly added hardware features of the previous "s" model anyways.)

When there's something worth upgrading for. I went from a 3Gs to a 5s, then to a 6 because I liked the larger display. I will probably upgrade to the 7, as I can't imagine the 6s offering anything that will make it worthwhile for me to get another new phone so soon, especially since I don't sell my old phones, I just give them to friends or family who want it.

I upgrade every time a new iPhone comes out! Thankfully Verizon allows me to upgrade every 10 months at a discounted price :D.

every single new model as soon as it is released. Been doing it since 2007, and see no reason to stop now.
As I live in a country where you are free to buy the phone without any interference from the tele-providers, it is basically as easy as popping the sim in the new one and we're good to go

I'd like to think every two years or so, but in reality it's not (for me).

My first phone was iPhone 4, and I had to get a new phone when it conveniently shattered just as iOS 7 rolled out and made it very laggy.

I got a 5c next because I liked its design. It lasted a little short of a year, when it conveniently shattered just like my previous phone when I was basically drooling over an iPhone 6 Plus after its release and wishing I had a reason to buy one (I always wanted a big phone and stuck with iPhones because I was familiar with iOS + Had apps I couldn't replace). I still used 5c in its shattered state until it somehow got stuck in restarting loop, and I couldn't get out. Gave me just the right reason to jump in for the 6 Plus - and that's where I am now.

I'm pretty satisfied with the 6 Plus and I hope it lasts me a long time, I'll try to stick with it as long as possible unless I somehow really want a new phone (design is very important to me so I'm thinking of a new phone that will release in 2016, probably called iPhone 7 - if I don't like it, I'll pass). I don't resell my phones (or, rather, never had the chance to as they all broke by the time it was time to get a new one) so I don't bother covering my phones up in a case. I try out cases the first few months of owning a phone and I always end up not using them.
