Though new Apple products are sensationally tempting it's an awfully expensive habit to get into.
True that. In the US, particularly so given the move from 2-year contracts to financing.

Before with the contracts, you're paying subsidy whether or not you get a new phone so really, you're leaving money on the table if you don't upgrade once your contract is up.

With financing/installment plans, service and phone pricing is separate so you stand to save full MSRP + taxes. I'm saving $1000 a year in service fees moving to the new Mobile Share Value plans.

i do every year and with the 6+ i wanted the big screen so bad i spent full retail price on it, but this year i might skip it, UNLESS theres a black/rose gold combination

Every 2 years. I never get the S iteration I feel like that's the version to work out the bugs for the next version.

The first iPhone I had was 3G bought second hand for $50. Had it for 6 months then stolen. Replaced with 3GS that I kept for 3 years. Only reason I upgraded was that many apps can't run on iOS 6.1.6. Got second hand 5s in 2014 and still have that. I generally buy n-1 tech for 40-50 cents on the dollar and keep for 3 years as daily phone. I tried android and it's ok but nowhere near Apple quality. Also agree that 16gb no longer enough. Next phone will b 32+ and also second hand as I don't do locked phone / subsidized contract.

Ipod touch 4th gen 2010 $300

Iphone 3G - 2012 $50

ipod classic - 2013 $230

Iphone 4s 2014 $80

My iphone 4S suits my needs and is plenty fast enough. $600 for another 16gb phone is too much.

Might sell my ipod classic for ~$250 since I almost never use it and go for a 128Gb(really like 114GB) iphone.

Every year here too, I am literally the only person I know who buys off contract and then gets a sim-only deal!
That is what I am going to start doing, I have been upgrading every two years since the iPhone was released. Prior to that it was 3 to 4 new phones a year.

I've picked up a new iPhone on launch day, every year, for years now. But that doesn't count the numerous Android phones I pick up on their launch days too...

I had 3G, 3GS 4, 4S, skipped 5 and 5S (went with a different smartphone), and back to the 6 Plus. However, being that my budget is getting tight, I plan on using the 6 Plus until it is no longer apple no longer supports the iOS on the 6 Plus then I will get the latest and the greatest at that time.

Usually every year. I have two at any point in time (one personal and one work) so it works out well as the two year contracts come up for renewal. That being said I may skip this time around as my personal one is doing ok and I no longer get the tax deduction for it.

In the past upgrade when there is a phone with one big thing I've always wanted. I bought the 4s and was completely happy with it. Two yrs later I upgraded to the 5c because I really wanted a bigger phone. Then I upgraded again a yr later to the 6 + . Again the upgrade was because the phone was bigger now don't get me wrong other specs are great too. Right now I'm happy with my 6+ only the camera could use a little work compared to Android cameras IMO.

I upgrade when I feel it's needed. My first iPhone was 3GS. I skipped iPhone 4,4s,5s. After my 3GS became slow I decided to go android because of bigger screen and functionality. I did wind up getting an iPhone 5 but I got rid of it because I felt like it was a toy.

I have a iPhone 6 plus now. I don't plan on getting the 6s unless they upgrade the display and camera. But I am definitely going to get an iPhone 7.

I buy my phones unlocked so I can switch phones anytime I want.

When contract is up. Depressingly I feel like I buy less and less for "amazing new features" and more just to restore usability to base functions that Apple degraded with software updates.

Every two years as most* UK mobile contracts are 2 years in length.

So are contracts in America.

I still update yearly. I just only get the subsidized (contract) price once every other year and pay the full retail the other years.

The lightning socket is unreliable on my i5 after 2 years (have to move the connector sideways until charging starts) so will be changing soon. Will stay with Iphone because I like how the apple kit works so well together and seamlessly (sharing data, icloud, updates etc).. Sorry, a bit off-topic :)

I used to upgrade every year, but I'm still using my iPhone 5S. The iPhone 6 is too big for my hand. I'm waiting for a 4" iPhone that supports Apple Pay (without an Apple Watch).

I prefer to update at redesigns. Which means every second year. I don't care about small spec/feature upgrades on S cycles.
