no set order for me

I base my decisions mostly on speed and features, and whether the investment is worth it over whichever model I'm replacing - going by phones which I purchased/upgraded to that were flagships at the time:

Got a 4 due to the Retina & FaceTime,

Got a 5 due to the lighter weight and the LTE

Got a 5S due to the touch ID and speed increase

Got a 6 for the battery, screen, faster wifi (but then sold the 6. Only iPhone I've ever sold that was a flagship model at the time. I really liked the design and curved edges...very comfortable to hold, but for the price was not a convincing upgrade overall)

I like to go S model to S model, but I went 4s to 6 and will prob go to the 6s when it is released

My first upgrade was when my first iphone was lost. And then I upgraded again and it was just a blessing that my dad gave me an iphone6. But it isn't really necessary to upgrade unless I need to upgrade phones. After all, iphones are just the same :)

My contract (iPhone 5s btw) will end in July of 2016, so I'm probably just gonna wait for the 7.

Every two years on the "S" years.

This time around I don't want to buy the 6S because I like the 4inch size of my5S but I'm so low on storage that I have to cut back on apps and music.

I have a 32gig and I'm thinking about just getting a used 64gig 5S rather than paying all that money for a phone I don't want.

For me it all depends. I upgraded my first iPhone 4 after around 1.5 years by paying off the remainder on my contract. I have owned my current iPhone 5 for just over 2 years now and will upgrade this in September for the iPhone 6S which I plan on purchasing outright. It all depends on when its the right time to upgrade.

Yearly. I've found that upgrading every year lets me recoup enough money to pay for the new iPhone.

Every two years. I am on the Next 12 plan so I could every year but nothing I am seeing in the 6S is making me want to upgrade. Both me and my wife's phones are paid off and I am not seeing enough to get me to upgrade. The physical changes entice me more than internal. Faster CPU and GPU don't do anything for me given how fast they already are. Force Touch and 2GBs of RAM are certainly desired but not enough to upgrade.

Totally agree, my iPhone 6 plus will last perfectly fine till the 7

My first phone was Motorola Razr .. Memories ...

My first iPhone was iPhone 4, then iPhone 5 which I'm still using. Will be getting 6s. Can't wait!

Every 2-3 years so far but I think I'll keep my 4s until it breaks beyond repair.

iPhone 3G - 2.5 years, then I had a technology purge
iPhone 3GS - 2 years, having got sick of temperamental buttons after an orange juice dunking
iPhone 4s - 1.5 years so far

I got a 3G on launch day, then a 4S on its launch. I replaced it a few months later when it was lost/stolen, but haven't seen the need to upgrade since then. It struggles with a few more demanding apps and heavy websites now, but given the price of a new phone I can live with it. We'll see how it does on the next version of iOS, but I can see myself keeping it for another year.

I do think that the longevity of iPhones is only going to improve, I'm sure a lot of 5S/6 will be in use in a good few years time. I know a few people with a 5C which is still going strong. The fact Apple have kept supporting the 4S for so long is a reason I wouldn't switch away from iOS for now.

Looking forward to hearing more information on the new upgrade option that Apple have announced through their stores. This will allow you to effectively lease the phone off them for a fee on a phone that is unlocked to all networks & then choose which network you go to. So potentially people can upgrade as soon as a new iPhone becomes available. Can't see how this will do the networks any favours though.
