For 8 yrs I never shut down my Macbook or Imac.

Now though I started shutting down my new Imac Fusion and Macbook Pro SSD, because I use passwords to log in.

Just going to sleep doesn't seem to require passwords.

Must be something in your settings. Every time I raise my lid I have to enter a password.

In System Preferences, under Users & Groups and Login Items, Automatic Login is where you can set it to either be prompted for a password or not when turning on or waking from sleep.

The only time my MBA ever restarted was for a software update, otherwise I just shut the lid.

I've only shutdown my MBP once since getting it about 10 days ago, when I applied the skin to the lid and bottom. I don't plan on ever really shutting down the machine.

Don't you feel bad when you do that..?
I feel like I'm making my machine suffer

lol, it's not suffering... it goes to sleep... zzzzzz ...

If I think along those lines, wouldn't it be more stressful to shut down / cold boot every time for the machine, instead of just putting it to snooze and wake it when you need to... :)

Every night and often after I'm done with it in class. With the PCIe SSD the boot ups are about or less than 10 seconds and I'm not wasting any battery life while it's in sleep. I don't see why anyone would keep any computer on for untold hours and days if there isn't a problem with the start up.

I usually don't shutdown mine unless the update requires it. My longest was over 500 days on my work rMBP 17. I just closed the lid when I am on the move. opened the lid when I am going to use it.

Seems to me one benefit of shutting down at least every few days is it clears out your RAM (I'm coming from a Window environment where that matters). Don't know enough about OSX processes and RAM usage but I'd think if you only have 4gb of RAM or if your RAM utilization regularly approaches your limit then periodic reboots would benefit.

Ah....windoze ram management....now that brings back memories.... :) add it to the list of this not to worry about under OSX....

just got my mbp and i have been read mix things about shutting down the mac

i went to the apple store m and they said i should shut it down while others say they never shut it down since they brought it

idk im a newbie mac user
There are dozens of "sleep or shutdown" threads where you'll find many Mac users run months at a time without shutting down. Either is perfectly fine. One thing to consider is that there are maintenance scripts that run on a daily, weekly and monthly schedule. If your Mac is in sleep mode at the scheduled time, the scripts will run the next time your Mac is awake. If your Mac is shut down at the scheduled time, the scripts won't run until the next scheduled time. If your Mac is always shut down at those times, the scripts will never run, unless you manually run them or change the default schedule. You can manually run the scripts using the Maintidgit widget.

once i see my ram getting more and more full i will reset it, otherwise sleep mode is just as good.

Not a good test. Maverick uses all my 8GB on a regular basis but memory pressure is always green - meaning it is optimizing, not relying on the 8GB. Mavericks seems much better at memory management than ML or Lion.

When you keep your mac on sleep, is it connected to power all the time? Please share your experience.

I find shutting it down really hard.

1. Apple -> Shut down.
2. Go through endless dialogues about programs with unsaved documents. Do I really want to shut down etc.
3. Shutdown cancels because some program or other didn't close itself properly.
4. Go to 2.
5. Eventually get tired of this, and hold down the power button.

Honestly, I wish there was a 'really shut down, save any open documents, force quit unresponsive programs' option.

People shutting down their machines is really really odd to me... The device isn't really meant to be shut down all the time, that's why there is a sleep mode and they added things like Power Nap.

I do not shut down my machine whether it's on battery or on a charger. Heck I can probably say I shut down my Mac laptops less than 50 times since owning my original MBP back in 2006.

If idle for an hour it will go to sleep. At the end of the day before bed, I do "Log Out", then "Sleep". This helps to make sure that I don't have any open application with documents that I forgot to save at the end of the day.

Someone can correct me with this. I believe Log Out also clears cache on ram with OSX/Mavericks?

Almost every day for me. I see no reason not too. You save energy.

One advantage to having flash storage is the boot time and shutdown.

It's funny how a lot of people who used to rave over SSD boot time and shutdown don't even shut down their computers. It seems as though those who never shut them down seem to think it's some type of pinnacle of achievement to not do so.

Weird.

The only time I shut down my computer is when I have to do updates that require a restart. The rest of the time I'm either using it, or it's in sleep mode.
