I shut the MBP down when I stop using it, though if I'm out between jobs I will close the lid and let it sleep. With windows 7 bootcamp I either shut down or hibernate, sleep is blue screen of death time with an AHCI modified bootcamp setup thanks to apple's pathetic default IDE legacy mode for windows.

The Mac Pro has sleep disabled on OSX as I often have external devices connected and sleeping with can cause grief with connections when woken up.

It's not as if it's a long wait cos both boot from SSD anyway.

I got mine in 2011. I shut it down last November when going on a plane, and again last week to change the battery. I think I did it one other time too but I can't remember the specifics.

Sleep is your friend! :)

Almost every day for me. I see no reason not too. You save energy.
I'm not sure this is true, at least not for the modern SSD equipped Macs. Since they now offer 30 days standby, the power consumed during sleep must be negligible.
On the other hand booting will consume some extra power, and re-loading stuff into RAM will also consume some extra power.

There is very little reason to shut off a Macbook. When I'm done working or using it I close the lid. I also don't turn off my phone btw... if I don't want to be bothered I silence it ;)

What do you think is happening in those 30 days? Power is being drained. Therefore, if you are plugged in and asleep you are using power and recharging.

SSD equipped Macs start up and shut down in seconds. Give your computer a break once in a while.

Standby for me means that the mac is not plugged in. If it lasts 30 days on battery while sleeping the battery drain is marginal.

My MBP is not a person, it is a machine. I don't see any benefit of shutting it down.

My rMBP that I bought new in October gets shut down for updates (I guess that's technically a restart lol) and when I was on a plane for the holidays. So I guess it's been shut down for more than a few seconds four times. Otherwose it's being used or in sleep mode. I leave it plugged in overnight. I did need to restart it a few weeks ago when I was having a ram issue (copying a mailbox from Time Machine to the current Mail app...)

I used to do the same with my 2009 MBP until I retired it as my main laptop. Now it gets shutdown after I use it because it doesn't get much use anymore. Still has an HDD, so I figure that's better for it.

One advantage to having flash storage is the boot time and shutdown.

It's funny how a lot of people who used to rave over SSD boot time and shutdown don't even shut down their computers. It seems as though those who never shut them down seem to think it's some type of pinnacle of achievement to not do so.

Weird.
Read post #35. The power drain during standby is minimal, and you can also leave it plugged in while on sleep or standby. The battery is not being drained when plugged in.

closing the lid works pretty well. The system is in a limbo, and doesnt utilize your battery or other resources.

It's still power drain plugged in or not. You guys are ridiculous. I don't shut down to save power. That is just another small perk of shutting down. I shut down because it takes no time to do so and 15 seconds to start working after restarting. There is no gain in putting the computer to sleep at night over shutting down.

How often does everyone shutdown their MBP?

i think i had shut down my MBA 2011 maybe 15-20 times in the past 3 years. One of the biggest pros a mac Laptop offers is the perfect sleepmode.

There is no power drain when plugged in, except for rare occasions when high demands draw power from both the battery and AC power. Such is not the case when in sleep mode. When fully charged and still plugged in, the battery stops charging and runs completely on AC power. Batteries do lose power if not used for a long enough period of time, but that is not due to draining.

If you had taken the time to read the post I suggested, you would understand a non-power advantage of sleep mode vs shutdown.

The link below should answer most, if not all, of your battery/charging questions. If you haven't already done so, I highly recommend you take the time to read it.

Originally, I stated you can also save power. Did I mention anything about the battery? Nope. You are using ENERGY whether you are plugged in or not when the computer is on whether it be battery power or charger power.

Therefore, you are wrong so stop trying to twist my words around to make it seem like you aren't.

Let's all take a moment of silence to recognize those who never shut their computers down. They have acheived so much. Let us remember all they have achieved.

^ This is what some of you act like you deserve simply for never shutting down your computer. Such a feat!!

Not sure if you can regard the choice for shutdown, or sleep, as a grandiose achievement. It's a choice - neither is "right" nor "wrong", per se, - but simply what you are used to, and gives you a better work flow.
And, just to throw in my opinion - sleeping gives the (sometimes small) advantage of keeping system and app caches loaded, giving some performance advantage to an already-booted system even with the fastest hardware.
You don't have that immediately after first launch when you use full shut down.
The small power drain during sleep is a small price to pay, but it remains simply a choice for how you want to work. As long as sleep, or even hibernate, remains as a feature, some users will still believe (correctly) that they can use those features when they want to, and some will continue to brag about long up-times. It's just part of the user experience. Nothing about that deserves such a sarcastic response...

No one is twisting your words, and there's no need to get emotional about a technical issue. The amount of energy used by a Mac on AC power in sleep mode is so minuscule as to be not worth mentioning. Shutting down might save you $.17 a year, or a similar ridiculously small amount.

You still failed to acknowledge the fact that there is another advantage to sleep mode versus shutting down, that has nothing to do with power or energy savings. If you read the post that I recommended, you can educate yourself about this advantage.

SSD isnt all about boot up time... I restart it when i need to update or if I'm having some problems, or when i don't have any energy, about once a week.
SSD is more about general system snappiness.

I never shut it down or reboot except to apply system updates, or if it's not going to be used for a few days.

Personal Mac - MBP RD 15"
Only when I have to do. There have been multiple events, perhaps five in one year, when I had to hold the power button to shut it down when it got screwed up over something. I will power down (hibernate) laptops which have a spinning drive while dealing with airport security and leave them off during the flight unless I am using them. My SSD drive laptops travel in "sleep" or "hibernate".
I do not power any computers off on a regular basis because "turning a computer (or other electronics) ON is the most stressful thing you can do to it." (I've lost the source of the quote).

Work Mac - MBP RD 15"
I cycle power once per week per the instructions provided by the IT department - the reason has to do with updates and how they are managed as well as credential management. I do not know the details and so cannot debate.

The reason I do not shut down is because I have a large assortment of applications running (8 - 10 at least) while I work, and it is a pain to to restart those if I don't have to. I really don't care about any miniscule savings in power.

So when someone states "one advantage" you take that to mean the only advantage?

Ever since my old black macbook nearly melted by turning on then in my laptop bag I always shutdown now. Not a big deal these days when you have an SSD.

I shut mine down a few times a week.

Now another question: how often do you use your MacBook Pro plugged in/on battery? Do you leave it on charge overnight?
